I'm Nick, and I'm here to answer these questions in a way that makes sense, whether you drink your wine with your pinky up or you drink it in a solo cup. Let's see what's going on this month. Alright, guys. Usually, as the wine expert around here, I have some strong opinions, some strong guidance. I'm not an expert on boxed wine. Now, I am also no snob about boxed wine. Uh, if you listen to our normal Dinner Plus Drinks podcast, you know we had this Shania Monastrel boxed wine previously. I love it.

I think that there's some really, you know, good advantages to boxed wine. It's better for the environment. Uh, it's better for camping, it's better for all sorts of things. You know, here on this house wine, they have uh hiking, snowshoe, or uh snowshoeing. Yeah, snowshoeing, skiing, camping, sailboating, playing cards, going to sporting events as things you might want to do. Interesting. What I do know is that 80% of boxed wine sales are black box and boda box. That proof. So we grabbed those. Uh, and most of what people drink are red wine blends. Now, when I popped into the local target, which is on the correct side of town for where I live, uh, I didn't want to go into downtown Lake Geneva right now because it's summer and that's crazy. Memorial Day weekend. If you know, you know. Yep. Uh so we have a black box cabernet, but the others are all in uh the Chania Monastral, but the others are a red blend, and I think um, you know, it should be close enough. Is this wine cube nationally distributed, or is that just so wine cube is a target thing. Okay, that's what I was wondering. Like they're uh California roots.

So here's what I thought we should do to determine the best. There's a lot of ways you could determine the best. We could say overall best quality. Are we going to give this one 93 points and this one 72? Um I don't know, it's it's boxed wine. It's not gonna be that good. It's not really the point. We're not doing tasting notes. Could we do, uh, for instance, this wine cube says dark red blend aromas of Blackbury and chocolate aromas. Could we do like which one best fits the description? No thanks. It's that's not what we're about here. So I thought we could do which one's most yummy, because this is for um app, you know, occasions where you just need something yummy. You just want some wine with your your chums. Uh, you need that yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy, yum. You know, get your beaver on. So, you know, maybe you're playing some beaver and you, you know, you're by the fire, your campfire, and you're, you know, you just want some yummy red wine.

Bridget, any thoughts before we know what my general thoughts about boxed wine is that this is the wine that I want to sit on my counter longer than a bottle of wine. So if only we could open them all, wait a week and come back and taste them and see which one holds up the best.

To me, like, yeah, red wine is a great or I'm sorry, boxed wine is a great value, is my perception. Um, and like my sister, she has boxed wine because it's really just her that drinks the wine. Her husband doesn't do as much. And so, like, she's like Come on, Dennis, get after it. She's just like, I can drink the box. Um, you know, it stays fresher longer than my whole bottle. Is that true? It is.

It's fresh for usually three to four weeks. Okay. Uh, these are all three-liter boxes, different shapes. Yeah. You know, the wine cube is a cube. I like the cube as well. It feels like an apple product more than a blackberry type of thing. Um, let's get started with the house wine. This is speaking of your sister, this is from Washington.

I love house wine. House wine is a safe thing. Um, Nick and I were talking about what wines we were gonna have, and we're like, you know what? House wine is safe. I think it's a brand people recognize it's bold looking, you know. I I don't know. Generally speaking, I like it out of a bottle. So, I mean, it's fine out of a bottle, I should say. Like, right? All right, man. I also am really glad Nick is doing the porcelain. Because it splatters all over. Thank you.

You're welcome. Okay, so this is the same red blend as what they put into their bottles, supposedly. How do we know? Um all it says for description is house wine, red wine blend, big, bold, jammy, and smooth. Okay. Big and bold, huh? Big and bold, jammy and smooth. This definitely smells like it's from Washington.

It's red wine. It is jammy, um, I think. Uh it's got like a scoche of petite sera weirdness to it that I personally detest. Oh, really? You know that like kind of um sorry. It's got like a thing of uh menthol a little bit to it almost. Oh, I guess I could see that I don't I like an Australian cabernet, but not in this one. But yeah, it's oh I could see that.

No, it's fine. My teacup works. Okay, wine cube. This one I'm excited for. It's it's a beautiful packaging and we love the packaging. It says, I'm delicious. Oh man, they have a lot of text on this one. Oh boy. This is uh Cabernet and Syrah. This is the dark red blend to be to be clear. Ooh, my style. It's fresh. Not just kind of fresh, we're talking ultra fresh. Okay, box, portable and award-winning. It's won 300 plus awards. Now, our rot worst at like two catch me to win awards. But if I wanted us to like start winning awards, you know what I'd do? What? I'd have Bridget review them.

So um, my feeling, you said, you know, we like the way this box looks, which we do. I do think, and this is not meant to be offensive because this is me too, person who drinks a lot of wine. Uh, if you're buying boxed wine, you're not necessarily buying it for its deliciousness. You're buying, you're like, oh yeah, this one looks cool, which is why it's surprising to me that Boda box and black box are the best, because I actually don't like their packaging very much.

I like Boda's. The the Nighthawk. So we got the Nighthawk black. The their traditional ones are garbage, like weird colors. The house wine I think looks a little too dark and scary. Oh, I like the house wine. It's like a Halloween package to me almost.

Are you looking for something to dump it in? Too sweet. Yeah, it's a little sweet for me too. Oh, was it? Look at what we're learning. We're like, no, they're all gonna be just the same.

Okay, on to Boda Box. This is their Nighthawk Black rich red wine blend, which is bold, dark, jammy. Jammy. Why are they all jammy? They're all bold, dark, and jammy. Um but they're so different. You know, it's like you'd like a tall, handsome drink of water, but uh you know. So uh let's see, what does Boda Box have to say? So this is night Nighthawk Black, where flavor soars. Ooh. Nighthawk makes great tasting wines with flavors as bold as our namesake bird of prey. When other birds go home to roost, the Nighthawk comes out to hunt. Okay. We hunt for intense flavor and nocturnal adventure wherever wherever our boldest instinct takes us. Um Bridget, uh, if this makes you feel like you need to go shut down Wolskis, then they succeeded. Because I think that's where your boldest instinct takes you. Right at Wolskis.

All right, so we should point out we pointed out that the um house wine was Chilean, the wine cube is Californian, as is Boda Box. Oh uh house wine is about $20 for the three-liter. Wine cube was $18 at Target for the three-liter. Nighthall Black is $17 on sale at Lake Cheney Country Meets right now. I'm just saying.

I I before I'm gonna, you know what, I was gonna say this till the end, but I'm gonna say it now before we drink the other two. I I like boxed wine, but it's because I buy boxed Cabernet. And I am gonna venture a guess, actually, that this Cabernet obviously is gonna be We shall see.

I yeah, I'm not sure, but so we have four pretty big brands. Now we're gonna go to venture to one more of a mm-hmm uh, you know, uh lesser known? Yeah, lesser known. Mm boutique, more of a boutique one. This is Shania, comes from Thunya. Uh this is 100% monastrel, which is a big bowl, dark red grape, also known as muvedra. Huh? Interesting. We've had this before.

Yeah, I've had this, but it I've like never maybe I have heard of monastrell in bottles. Is this one you would serve warm or cold normally?

Here's what I think is funny. We use no herbicides or pesticides to sustain healthy soils in our dry farm vineyards. You're cheap. If you've been doing it for over a hundred years, it's because you're cheap. Oh boy. You know, in 1930, we all thought heaping on some fertilizer to get more, you know, yield was a great thing. And you know, oh my gosh, there's this new product called DDT that'll kill all the bugs. It's great. We didn't know it was bad, you know, when it came out. So if you didn't use it, it wasn't because you didn't think it was because you're cheap.

This is great though. No, this is they say they have uh naturally made dry red wine with blackberry and blueberry notes. I get a lot of the blueberry. Oh richness, structure, and balance. And this one is like uh also $18, $19 like Shimagunds.

Four bottles. And I I'm not making for the family because like a good market shield, but it because it's actually a family-owned thing. They're very nice people, they do really good work. So actually that one's great. On the intangibles, you know, they may be a fifth-round draft pick from a school you've never heard of before, but they kill it with intangibles. Did great at the senior bowl. Do you like that obscure football NFL draft reference? Oh, I didn't think I was gonna make it through that little cough.

I think they're pretty neck and neck. Actually, I think Boda recently started selling more.

Is it because they're the most widely distributed?

I think so, yeah. I think Boda's strategy was more of um wine shops first and then into mass market. I think uh so they hit both channels. And black box, I think, has really just focused on like grocery stores, uh big chains like Walmart, things like that more.

Uh, as far as I know. But also, there's a lot of on-premise bars, restaurants, whatever that are shifting to boxed wine as their pours. Really? Because I guess that's actually pretty smart. Yeah, you're not burning a bottle, it's good forever. Interesting. Especially like if you're you know, if you're a wine bar and with a more serious clientele, you're still gonna have people come in and want a sweet wine every once in a while. But do you really want and you're gonna want to have something that's a decent quality? Yeah. So your choices are to have a four-dollar bottle of Moscato that you're gonna charge $12 for, you know what I mean, to get to yep. Or just have a box and you know, that you feel like, yeah, it's you know, not everybody's cup of tea, but it's a good quality and doesn't cost us so much. We can feel good about it.

This led me to two, well, one main question. Um, like the wine bars where you have wine on tap. Is that actually really like a bag of wine?

That is a keg of wine. Oh, keg, that makes more sense. It's a legitimate keg, just like beer.

Um, they've actually been doing it for a while. You know, these hippies out west in the northwest and Pacific Northwest, they like their hiking and outdoors and sustainability and all that garbage. They need boxes of wine. Well, yeah, it fits their hippie lifestyle.

It feels like some weird move there. Anyway, so black box, 70 gold medals, cabernet Sauvignon from Chile, rich aromas of dark fruit complemented by a deep, lush body. The finish is soft and long with lingering notes of berry. Dude, this is fruity too. Are you sure you're not just drunk when you go to the boxed wine and misremember it? I haven't had boxed wine in a long time.

Isn't it? Oh, this is so sweet on the back of it. Okay, thank you. Don't judge me. This is thin and Wow. Okay, so compared to the Nighthawk, so this is actually very similar, I think, to the Nighthawk. Yes, I agree. But it's thinner. So the Nighthawk, you're at Lisa like, okay, it's bold. It's big. So like it this the sweetness isn't quite as like cloin. This is just freaking cloyingly sweet and thin.

Yeah, this could benefit from some more alcohol. That's what I'm gonna say. Wow. Nick, this is how much alcohol's in the Boda box. I thought this was gonna be better.

This was 13.5 in the Boda box. I I do really, I should say, you know, if you've been following along, listening to us, that this isn't maybe necessarily our style of wine, but I do think that a lot of people, especially if you're just kind of like an everyday wine drinker, not an everyday, if you're just like, I like wine occasionally, I think these are great pleasing and great to people like that. We just have honed in on specifically what types of wine we like, and these aren't always necessarily that exactly that.

I like red, white, rose, and sparkling. I've really honed in. Okay, well, I know what kind of red wine I like. Um the closest we got is the Chanel. We have we have boxes of wine at our house for you know, uh, we killed a good bottle type of thing, or we have people coming over or parties where it's like, yeah, yeah, you know, this makes sense. Don't want to have 72 different bottles of wine open. Everybody can kind of like this. Yep.

So I'm I this has inspired me to try white boxed wine because going into the summer months, which we are doing as this is being released. I I don't, I'm not normally a white wine drinker, but in the hot weather, like I want that. But you know, same with like my neighbor, she loves white wine. Maybe I should just get a box of white wine to try.

That's a good idea. I think the vibrant Sauvignon Blanc from Nighthawk Black is actually very good. Okay. Um, or Boda Box, Nighthawk bland, vibrant Sauvignon Blocks. So many damn names.

Anyway, yeah. Um I've had that one. I like that one. I think that might be a good fit. Um, I'm gonna give you my pref, I'm gonna let you gather your thoughts over here. I'm gonna give my professional opinion of each one of these. The house wine, I thought was well made. I thought it was a little dry for what a lot of people that are looking for a box of wine are looking for. But I think if you're someone that's, I don't want to say more of a serious wine drinker, but likes a drier wine like a Cabernet, and just wants something to have on the countertop for that late nine glass of wine, little relaxing thing, not worry about killing a whole bottle. I think that's a great fit for you. Yep. The wine cube, I didn't get it. Um, I really didn't get it. It's a great package. I thought they did a really good job of laying out the flavors, explaining it, but it's very sweet. Like very sweet. Very sweeter than the black box? I think so, yeah. I mean, go back and try it again. Let's try it again.

Claw! Um, I thought this one was just it needed Honestly. I also think this needs a little more alcohol. I think the so the black box, the wine cube are 13%, where the Nighthawk black is 13.5, and I think a little bit more alcohol really helps bring out I'm sticking with my same ranking. Actually, it's not as sweet as I thought it was.

It's less sweet than the black box. Okay, I'm gonna take that back. Uh compared to the black box, yeah. This is why we retaste Nighthawk black, rich red wine from Boda Box.

It falls right in the middle. It's got a little bit of tannin on the back end, which is nice in a red wine like this, because it is some big sweet flavor, so a little bit of dryness on the end. It's kind of ice bow on it. It helps. Um I think a lot of people are gonna like that one. The shania, I thought it's pretty darn good. Yeah, um, good flavors. It's a complete wine. It starts with some aroma and has some flavor in the middle, and you know, has an end to it, a little bit of tannin on the back end. And then the black box is like not good. Okay, I was like a just not good.

Um it it does last on my list. Um, yeah.

It's very sweet, it's very under flavored. Alarmingly sweet. It's it's I would say it's like lacking flavor in general. Uh I don't all I can think of is like that's so sweet for a cabernet. It feels like they took Nighthawk Black and put a little bit of water in it and bottled it. You know what I mean? And some more sugar.

I already am like, oh God, and we you should see my dump bucket. Okay, so I have very similar feelings. Um, a little less technical because that's that's me. But Shania for sure was the top ranked.

I do um think the chill helped too. Oh, for sure. The chill on these jammier ones would be a good summer option, I think.

Um, so the Shania for sure was my uh number one. Housewine was number two, and that's mostly because it was a little more my style. So a little more dry. It's it's personally my number two. I don't think it would be what I would say the red, it's not your typical red blend, in my opinion. When I think of red blend, I think of like the wine cube. Like it's like a little fruity and just kind of there. You know, it's fine. Um, so house wine, Boda Box was my third, it's right in the middle. Not as um, it's jammy. It's jammy. I had a hard time. I switched between the Boda Box and then wine cube was my fourth. So I could go either way without uh either of those, honestly. Um my wine cube was a bit sweet, was my first note on it, but it just kept getting sweeter. Because remember, we tried that secondly to start. And then I'm so sorry, but the black box falls very much at the bottom. So sweet. It's just and I really wanted to love it, being it that it's a cab. So maybe a black box red blend is good.

Yeah, so this was uh shocking because again I came into it being like, these are all gonna taste the same. They're all red blends in a box. Nope. But yeah, it was they were just all so much. I will say, when I first started drinking wine, I think like I tried to explain before, um, I just always got a red blend. You don't know any better. You're like, yeah, this blends all the things. That makes sense. Not anymore.

A lot to be said for red blends. You can, you know, make something that's greater than the sum of the parts. I think this just kind of is a bunch of stuff. But together, a lot of fruit, a lot of fruit. Um, yeah, I'm really impressed by the Shania. Yep. Uh, it's a cool family that does it. It's you know, available at fine wine shops. And you know, the other thing I think it's funny, the black box was $22. It was the most expensive of all these.

Branding. Branding. Got a good strong brand name behind it. 70 gold medals. Wow. I would say overall, buy any of these boxes. You're welcome to chill them and drink them in the summer, and they'd be good. I think it's a great tip, Bridget. It'd be juicy. Juicy. Juicy. Maybe with some ice cubes in it. Yeah, and this is very not me to say chili red wine. Honestly, really put some ice cream. Ice cubes would probably help. I do think I was about to make fun of you, but watering it down.
