~ Bridget and Nick

SPEAKER_00

I don't know to start this episode, Bridget.

SPEAKER_02

It was a long moment of silence. I I thought I had ideas, but I don't. Well, hi, everybody then. Let's just play the music. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

What I'm mostly excited about right now is actually it's almost uh Guinness season and corned beef season. So we do these uh stew kits at work where uh you get some beer to cook your corned beef in and vegetables and stuff, and we always use the Guinness that hasn't sold from the previous year as the cooking Guinness because you know it doesn't matter. Like, it's fine. And please don't come after us.

SPEAKER_01

It's totally fine.

SPEAKER_00

I'm digging through this stuff, and we're reducing food waste, okay? Um I'm digging through this part. I'm digging through this stuff to find last year's Guinness cans. I'm like, I know I have like a couple busted up ones, and like I take the busted up things for the cast out of sidefoots. Resourceful. I'm like, I know I have these somewhere, and then I found this. Yeah, what is this? So this is like probably three years old now. Sick! It is the 200th anniversary export stout. No, this will be good. Like, I promise you, this will be good. It will have like extra coffee flavors. Well, I'll just poured in my coffee because it's the 200th anniversary export stout, which is a little bit bolder stout uh from Guinness, but still it's only five percent or six percent alcohol.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because we tried a Guinness the other day when we were doing some recipe testing, and I was like, God, it's so watery.

SPEAKER_00

I just like forget how watery it is. I was thinking of you, so this is gonna be a less watery Guinness.

SPEAKER_01

Is this like actually normal to be drinking this three years later or no?

SPEAKER_00

It's fine.

SPEAKER_02

It's fine. I'm getting on a plane this afternoon. I don't want to get sick, Nick. You're gonna be fine. Oh, this will not make you sick.

SPEAKER_00

It just might taste a little off. But no, it tastes like better than regular Guinness. Yeah, so like we should definitely hook you up with extra stout all the time.

SPEAKER_01

That's delish, isn't it?

SPEAKER_02

Ooh, I'm impressed. Wow, this is what I want Guinness to taste like all the time instead of how watery it's a little bit.

SPEAKER_00

Alright, so now we know Bridget likes Guinness extra stout.

SPEAKER_01

Guinness hard. I like Guinness directly from Ireland. I've had it there.

SPEAKER_00

It's well that's the draft. Yes. This is like what you'd find in Nigeria, for instance. Oh. Do you know Nigeria is the world's biggest Guinness customer? No. Yeah. Maybe next week we should maybe I should uh find a bunch of weird Guinness facts for well, let's save that for the our uh annual St.

SPEAKER_01

Patrick's episode.

SPEAKER_00

I I think so. I'll have to find those. We um so I gotta tell you something I was doing last night. You're gonna appreciate this.

SPEAKER_01

Oh god, okay, okay.

SPEAKER_00

So I got targeted. You know how I know I spend too much time around you? Because you got targeted for some woman product? Uh for espresso. Oh yeah. I mean, uh targeted by these how to make espresso TikToks. Oh. And like I'm kind of interested in this. And so I started Googling like the difference between espresso and coffee, like all the espresso drinks, because I don't know this. Oh, this has happened to me like crazy too.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, it it I don't I'm getting random text messages.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, from like numbers you don't know.

SPEAKER_01

I got one that was like, oh hey, Bridget. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And that was the whole text, and I was like, well, I'm not gonna answer. I don't know who this is. I don't know what's happening. I think the Russians are coming after us, but I um Googled all these coffee drinks.

unknown

What?

SPEAKER_00

And I think Wait, why? I don't know. Sometimes I just get like I feel like I should try them. I have ADD and I was like, like an espresso, a cappuccino, a latte. Like I'm like, what that what are all these? So save you money on Red Bull. So I think perhaps maybe we should do a coffee tasting for Nick.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

That would be so great. Like we could do all of the we could line up all the coffee drinks. Do they have to be cold? Or will you drink them hot? No, I would prefer them like tepid. Tepid. I don't like ice cold beverages. Or hot or hot beverages. What? I am the exact opposite. Yeah, you want it like ice cold, like, oh my god, Bridget, could you just meant to be fill your teeth?

SPEAKER_01

Like specifically milk. I'm like, is it wrong to put ice in my milk? It needs to be cold. I know I don't put ice in my milk. People calm down.

SPEAKER_00

In the words of Ron Swanson, skim milk is the worst of everything because it's milk lying about being water.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah. That is funny. Um, okay, I like a coffee taste off. Yeah, it's we need to do a morning one, and you can't have Red Bull, your heart will explode.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, I'm not feeding you 10 espresso drinks and a Red Bull. I I'm pretty tolerant of caffeine. So I'm not responsible for any heart attacks.

SPEAKER_00

I started, I started, uh I told you about this a little bit. I started doing these new, it's called Lane Break by Peloton.

unknown

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

It's kind of uh it's like this interactive thing where you have to like change lanes and like keep up with the beat and like hit certain things. It's kind of like a VR, like those things where you swing the t uh the uh like lightsabers or whatever, and like you have to like toss things up like to the beat. So it's kind of like that. Like a dance workout. It's a lot of fun, and you don't realize how hard you're working. I did uh the first one I did, I'm like, I'll just try a 10-minute one, see if I like this, like not too in it crazy or anything like that, is like Bowie songs. I'm like, I like Bowie, this is good, and you know, we'll see how this goes. And it was my most intense 10-minute workout ever by like a long shot, and I hadn't been on the bike in like a week and a half because I was on vacation.

SPEAKER_01

Efficient workout.

SPEAKER_00

And I was like, oh wow, this is fun. And I like tricked myself into working out harder than I usually do. So I'm very excited, but I took off yesterday because like my hip felt like it's out of socks. Because I'm old, I was I was probably going a little too hard. And uh my dance workout.

SPEAKER_01

Um, okay, vacation.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Was it even worth it?

SPEAKER_00

You know, I like laughed out loud at your uh line on the outline here. This is always the thing. So I really think today's Friday because we're recording the podcast. We recorded the podcast last Thursday, and my life is so run by like, you know, these patterns and schedules. And I had to go back to work last Saturday, like it was a Monday, you know, so it it screwed up my entire schedule. And you just are like, oh, I'm so far behind on all of these things.

SPEAKER_01

Is vacation ever worth it? I was trying really hard to not bring my laptop on this quote vacation that I'm going on. And I was like, that would require me to get magically four days ahead in the same amount of hours and pack an entire family for a surprise vacation. So like they couldn't have helped.

SPEAKER_00

So the answer is no, I am bringing my laptop. I think you should call it a vacation surprise.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, surprise. I am so excited to surprise the kids. I'm like really trying to lower my expectations because they're gonna be like, This better be a real. No, I who's got time for that shit.

SPEAKER_00

How to surprise your kids going on vacation so they don't know that. All right. So, first of all, what you need to do is make sure you don't tell them. And then while they're at school, you like to pack. I like to say that you should pack one bag for every two kids' worth of day stuff to do. Now, here's the fun part if you don't screw it up.

SPEAKER_02

What you have to do is a pretty good real voice.

SPEAKER_00

I so annoying. Damn, real. Some brand I like uh recently hired some influencer to do a real, it's like a brewery or something, I can't remember. And I'm like, hey guys, you're your whole thing is you're selling to men. Yes. And then you have the like real voice lady like, hey everybody, I want you to know I tried this new beer from three sheeps, and and it's not three sheeps, but I tried this new beer from three sheeps, and what you have to know about this is that I'm like, oh my god. No, every man in the world's gonna be like, Shut up. I'm I'm I I know.

SPEAKER_01

I just um the world's been real heavy. It's been heavy. So this is a nice time to escape and pretend it doesn't exist, which is a horrible thing to do. But this trip was booked a long time ago. So yeah, yeah, that's great. Uh, but I'm with you. Like, vacations never quite work worth it. You're like, well, I'm behind and I'm stressed.

SPEAKER_00

As I look at our good friend Kevin, he um is retirement. Just that's the only thing that gives me hope. He looks so happy. We'll retire one day when it's gonna be a good time. So carefree, so stress-free. I like that's what I feel like, okay. Well, then like the vacation that is retirement appears to be worth it. Oh. Because he's like just happy.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, that's a far cry from where we're at.

SPEAKER_00

We've got a few years. We'll be 90. We're never gonna get social security. The stock markets are gonna continually crash. Hopefully, we'll be able to arrive. Put your money in the stock market, you'll get 7% annualized return. The boomers are gonna screw that up too.

SPEAKER_01

Oh boy. This is a positive uh podcast here. So I'm sharing a news story that's negative but positive at the same time. You're gonna take a frown and turn it upside down. Is that what you're doing? I can't find any news stories that are not depressing right now. So I would be remiss to ignore the fact that um, you know, there's a large war happening uh just over there a bit. Uh so our good pal, who we've talked about on here, Quentin Quarantino, have you been following him? I have not. Oh man, he's like where I'm getting my news. So get after me about it.

SPEAKER_00

Whatever. He um the original protein shake, again. Great in the morning.

SPEAKER_01

Good for breastfeeding moms.

SPEAKER_00

Very good for breastfeeding moms. I'm just saying.

SPEAKER_01

Um, anyway, Quentin Quarantino has been, he he has a huge audience and he's been spreading the news. Okay. This is a short, the short way to describe him. I follow him on Instagram. I'm sure younger people follow him on cooler platforms like TikTok. I have no idea if he's on it. Uh he's, I think, like in his 20s, so I'm sure he's on it. Um, but anyway, he's been sharing something that I've now seen, like people I know have done it, um, how to help support people in Ukraine like directly immediately, because you're kind of like, okay, this is a world away. What should I do? Like donate to Don't buy Russian vodka. Right, like sure, okay, but that's not like directly helping anyone. So you book an Airbnb. You find that it's not managed by a company, you find that it's managed by an individual, and you book it for the closest dates that you can. Email the host and say, I'm not coming, but here's some money. So, like, hopefully, and if you don't need this money, please give it to someone who does or buy supplies for someone who does. Yeah, and it's that's really cool. He has a huge platform and like people follow him, right? Like they do what he says. And so tons he's been resharing all these people doing it. And then the host's responses, which are also funny because they're translated, so they're, you know, interesting English, but it's really cool. So Quentin Quarantino, it started in quarantine. No, he's not Quentin Tarantino. He has to literally, like once a week, he posts, like, again, no, I am not this. Don't send me your scripts.

SPEAKER_00

I'm not interested in your scripts.

SPEAKER_01

I do not make movies. So um, it's really cool. It's a I thought it was a really unique way, you know, like when the pandemic started and we were like, oh, we should just buy gift cards at our hair salons, and you know, like how do we support these people? This was a really interesting way, and it seems like it is working. I'm so curious to like go on and see if it'd be great if like Airbnbs were sold out for months, you know.

SPEAKER_00

I uh keeping with the kind of travel theme of this episode, I I fly southwest. I hate it in some ways, but I love it in other ways. Uh, I do think their gate agents and flight crew and everybody actually is a little bit nicer than everybody else's people, which I like. I appreciate their customer service. Although I did have my first bad experience with them ever in DC, but I think as I touched on last episode, the service industry in DC is so garbage. Oh yeah, I was just not surprised that this gate agent was like, I can't help you with that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'm like I'm dreading it. I used to love travel, and they're people are just such dicks now.

SPEAKER_00

But um, I've read this very fun article about a lady. So, first of all, the lady in this article said uh still fully admits she's stupid and screwed up, but she her family is a family of letter writers, and so um interesting she took all of these letters from an aunt on a plane with her handwritten letters over like 20 years that detail her aunt growing up and falling in love and all these things, and she was reading them on the plane. And you know, some people bring novels, some people bring iPads, she brings letters from historic pasta uh and she was reading them and she forgot them on the plane.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, come on!

SPEAKER_00

She's like, there's no one, there's no way these are gonna be found. She's like, I'm an idiot for not having made copies of them, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But a Southwest airline employee, one of the flight attendants, found the letters and managed to track down who they were. Because one of the things with the open scene is it's not like you can look up, like, okay, who had 16B.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_00

So managed to track down from you know some social media sleuthing and all that. And it was a very nice, like, just good do good news thing of I just want to say, like, shout out to Southwest. I do think your flight attendants, I mean, many airlines would do this, but you see a lot of this with Southwest, like they value it. So it's one of the things I'll report back.

SPEAKER_01

That's who we're flying, and I'm actually pissed off about it. Because I've been flying Alaska and I've been flying directly. Are you checked in already? Yeah, we're checked in, and that's the another piece of bullshit. Is like I checked in immediately because we're not eligible for the paying extra dollars to check in early, which like whatever. Also, we're a family, so we should be able to go on first. But I heard Southwest is really sneaky about how they do that. So, anyway, we're in the A group for our first flight, and then the end of the B group for our second flight. And we all I logged, it was immediate. Like that shit pisses me off. Sorry, Southwest. Anyway, I also hate layovers. Oh, I hate layovers too. But it I feel like Southwest has like zero direct flights anymore.

SPEAKER_00

Out of Milwaukee. I like also refuse to fly out of Chicago, so yeah, you gotta be well, Midway's actually almost worse because they only is way worse. Because they fly out of Midway in Chicago.

SPEAKER_01

Midway and Milwaukee, but everything from Milwaukee is a connection for them now.

SPEAKER_00

I was able to go to DC direct. From Milwaukee? Yeah, that's great. Uh, if you go to Love Field, that's direct.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Where are my flights to? Um, our layover is in Nashville.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, they have a big hub in Nashville. I hate that airport.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's so dumb. And it's just such a waste of time, but whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I read another news article that I was originally thinking about sharing, but we're trying to make this positive. And because I thought of you, and I actually I thought of Tyler. Uh-oh. Uh, and like every man all the time that has to get to the airport five hours early.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, we're gonna have plenty of time today.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, all that stuff. Because I was freaking out a little bit about my flight from DC of like how early do I need to get there? There's like the variable of you're taking the metro, which can be delayed. Yeah. Uh it's like a 15-minute walk from the metro station at Reagan to the terminal where Southwest is. So it's like, so I showed up like two hours early, got through security in five minutes.

SPEAKER_01

Uh-huh, and then hung out for two hours.

SPEAKER_00

And DC is like an old school, they're at the old school part of it, which is beautiful architecturally and like historically significant. The internet's slow. But there's nothing airside, right? There's nowhere to sit. There's nothing. So uh so anyway, this article made me think of of you. It was of someone that literally it also made me think of myself with my morning illness that people are like, it was literally about this person that gets physically ill when they walk into an airline terminal. Shut up. And was like talking to the doctor about, hey, like, is this a psychological thing? Is this something in the air? Is this like a 9-11 remnant? You know, what is it? And uh eventually got diagnosed as terminal illness.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I was all excited. I'm like, oh, I want to hear.

unknown

All right, we're back.

SPEAKER_00

We're back.

SPEAKER_01

And yes, we have things to share with you, but first we have a question for you. On the break, we were talking about security regulations at the airport, and here's my qualms. Ready? Is an applesauce pouch considered a liquid or a gel? I think it's plasma.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's a fourth state of uh matter. So I'm not sure if the TSA is considered that.

SPEAKER_01

I just, yeah, I'll ask them today. Can I not have my applesauce pouch? Can I bring fresh produce? Once they made me throw away a whole apple because they said it wasn't allowed. So, like, can I do that or not?

SPEAKER_00

All right, so I'm gonna share a little story here. So I went to the International Spy Museum that was after the recording, and it was like the coolest thing in the world. I know, I'm so excited. It was really, really cool. One day to go. Uh, but they had a whole section about industrial espionage too, because they're like, hey, it's not just like states like doing James Bond stuff, it's like corporation A against corporation B too. And uh one of the things was there's two Chinese dudes that are currently on the FBI's most wanted list because they tried they stole seeds of corn from Iowa. So the story is that some farmers in Iowa saw two Chinese dudes pulled over on the side of the road in suits digging up seeds.

SPEAKER_01

Dude, come on.

SPEAKER_00

And they're like, Huh, see something, say something. I'm sure a heavy delp of racism played in. But also, like, yeah, two like clearly Chinese dudes in suits in Iowa kind of sketch. Uh, so calls the FBI or calls the police or whatever. They're like, hey guys, what's going on? And they don't have a good story. FBI gets involved. And it turns out it's two guys from the Chinese government, more or less, you know, one of their farm companies, digging up the GMO seeds because China hasn't figured out GMO seeds and stealing the GMO seeds from whomever so that they don't have to pay the patents to the American company.

SPEAKER_01

What if they're like, hey, you're going on a business trip to Iowa and you're gonna dig up a field.

SPEAKER_00

They have like the seeds on display that got seized, and I guess these Chinese dudes got out of the country somehow, but they're still on the FBI's most wanted list for trying to steal industrial trade secrets.

SPEAKER_02

That's hilarious.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, they're like agricultural espionage, and like, so I was like, oh man, Bridget, I hope you don't take a bunch of seeds through the airport. That might get you flagged as a terrorist.

SPEAKER_01

I will take the sunflower seeds out of my trail mix immediately. As long as they're non-GMO. That's what I mean. Like, what am I allowed? Like, F you toothpaste is a gel, right? Like, can I bring my toothpaste?

SPEAKER_00

I have given up taking toilet trees on planes and just buy them when I get there.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, well, I check a bag. I had to fight pilot. I'm like, we have free checked bags. Yeah, sound press your bags fly free. Oh, anyway. Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_00

So I like this recommendation.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so this is so silly, but because we're kind of talking travel here, okay, I'm gonna share a travel tip that I stole from some other mom who uh blogged about it. Um, I'm not gonna blog about it, so I'm just gonna tell you here. Uh, silicone placemats, silicone placemats. Like most responsible parents, I think, buy these and put them on their tables to keep them clean and food from slipping. We were never the parents that did that shit. Like we were like, here, you're gonna make a mess. It's fine. We like we never bought all of the mom things in that way. But on Amazon three days ago, I finally bought these because this mom blog blogger said, buy these placemats, they roll up really tiny, and then you put them down on the tray table on the airline. One, so it's cleaner because those tray tables are gross, and two, there's like a lip on the edge, and they um they are non-slip. So the kids can like play, they can have their markers on there without it rolling off. It was genius. It's genius. So, like if they spill, it gets caught by the lip on the edge a little. So I there, you know, there's a million options. I bought two beautifully colored ones, two for $13. We'll put a link to them. Um, they have a little star in the corner, which is how you fold them. So they like roll it up, and then this star is like what that's very smart. Yeah, it's very smart. I almost bought different ones, and this caught me. So these silicone placemats, if you're traveling, it's a super easy travel hack that costs next to nothing, and you can use them when you get home.

SPEAKER_00

I bought a new backpack for my trip. Oh it is the Embark Jartop backpack. It worked very well for me. There are some one-star reviews that say it falls apart in like three or four months. I haven't had it that far, but I was able to get four days worth of clothes in it a laptop, a Kindle, all the exorded uh charging cords, and a pair of my shoes, which it's very hard for me to pack shoes in a backpack because I have size 13 shoes. Why didn't you just check a bag? Because I didn't want to be lugging a well, we talked about so like because my Friday, like, I didn't want to be lugging a bagground. So I got it. I got very good at folding clothes. I'm terrible at folding clothes, like terrible at uh folding clothes. But uh it worked very well, things fit in there very well. Uh nicely thought out with all the different pockets and zippers and things. So if you're looking for a new backpack, it's 40 bucks a target. Good quality. Uh, I definitely got reined on a lot with it. Uh the adjustable straps are very easy, very nice. I liked that because I was, you know, having heavier bags some days and less heavy bags some days, so you gotta adjust that. It was very intuitive, easy. I don't understand how these loopy baggy things work. You know, like when you have like a fanny pack and you have to adjust how long the straps are by like pulling some of the string in and some of it out. Oh I don't understand how those work. Really? Yeah, I never understand them right.

SPEAKER_01

I have like the trendy uh crossbody bag thing that I got at Target because then I can have all of our travel documents right by my boobs. Because you know I'm responsible for all that shit.

SPEAKER_00

So uh so anyway, I was very impressed by that. Check it out if you're looking for a backpack. I liked it. Have some fun traveling again, world. Go out. We don't have to wear a mask anymore. Do we? We're gonna see when the TSA drops that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, as I'm going to the fucking hellhole.

SPEAKER_00

I again would like to just rec applaud the CDC for dropping that little nugget on Friday afternoon as Ukraine was being invaded without telling anybody else in the world. So these things are like, hey, you should hint to everybody you're gonna do this in about a week. Like, make your decision. Tell everybody else, hey, we're probably gonna do this in about a week, but we're pretty sure, but you know, so just maybe think through what you want to do. So, like this TSA, for instance, can be like, oh, we're gonna make it's gonna be hell for all the flight attendants that have had to enforce this thing already. Yeah, so we still have to wear flight. Yeah, TSA hasn't changed it. So, like you just made life so hard on these flight attendants that now have to say, like, yes, I know the CDC said you don't have to, but we do.

SPEAKER_01

I'm like fully prepared to record someone fighting with a trap.

SPEAKER_00

I had a guy behind me in Milwaukee Security that was not wearing it, and I'm like, oh, this is gonna be bad.

SPEAKER_01

My friend is a flight attendant, and she's so funny. She's like so nice about her stories, and we're like, Erin, just give us the good stuff.

SPEAKER_00

Like, no one's we don't know any of these people. Maybe we'll share some travel stories from hell coming up after the break. Did you miss us? You should have, because what we got for you is good. So for this one, we figured we'd share some travel stories from Hal. Luckily, honestly, I've never had like a horrible travel story. Thank God, knock on wood. Um, you know, delays here and there, rough landings here and there. But nothing good. But nothing where you're like, oh, this is gonna be a good story on some point.

SPEAKER_01

Do you follow passenger shaming on Instagram?

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_01

It like is the best. It's it's people who have recorded other passengers just being irate assholes.

SPEAKER_00

I am the guy that definitely like will say, Hey man, calm down. You can't put your feet on like I actually so I did have someone try and like put their feet through Oh, that's an You know how people do that? They put them through the seat and like underneath or in between? In between. Oh, yeah, that's especially on like the window seats, they'll put you know their feet and then their foot. And so I literally like put my hand on their foot, turned on and said, like, hey, you can't put your foot there, okay?

SPEAKER_01

Did he like just take it away?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he took it away. I mean, to be fair, I'm a six foot one, two hundred and thirty-pound dude, so with a beard. So there's a little bit of there's a little bit of the like, oh yeah, like this guy could, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Or just like, yeah, I was being a dick. Whoops.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, or like a five foot two girl, like my wife, is not gonna quite have the same weight of.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I'll do it.

SPEAKER_00

Shannon, when I traveled with There's not quite the same amount of punch you in the face.

SPEAKER_01

You're right. We we had to fly across the country for Britney's wedding, and Lucy was six weeks old, and Max was like seven months. Shannon was so scared to fly with me because she I was like all prepared to like fight people if they wanted to yell at me about my kid crying.

SPEAKER_00

I don't mind that.

SPEAKER_01

And and like it sucks more for the mom with the kid crying, so screw you. Like it's annoying. Sure, put your headphones in. Like, sucks for the mom. So Shannon was so nervous to fly with me because Shannon's nice and and she like brought treats for people sitting near her where I was like, fuck you, you want to cry? I have a newborn on a plane.

SPEAKER_00

There was uh a fresh seat behind me uh on my flight back, and it was some parents coming from DC to visit their parents in like Okotamawak. And like four-week old. I mean, tiny bitsy bitsy. And they bought a seat, they had the carrier, you know, so like they did everything like as kindly as you possibly could do. Blessings to them. And the flight attendant comes back and was a little like aggressive. She did a she like sang the she's like, you gotta have your kid out of the carrier out of your arm into the carrier. And the mom's like, oh, why? And the flight attendant's like went into full and like, because I'll tell you why. And I'm like, hey lady, like I get it, you're probably I just had her strapped to me. They said she had to be in the carrier, and like eventually she explained it nicely. It was like a completely legitimate question from this mom of like, I would like if something happens, I want to be holding my baby. Should you won't be able to hold her because of the force, it's worse than a car crash. We don't want you to drop her, so that's why she has to be strapped in.

SPEAKER_01

I can literally never foam with a car seat, and I never will.

SPEAKER_00

So that's I don't understand that. I really don't. I think if you don't bring a car seat, you wouldn't have to do it. But I've never bring a car seat, you have to.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's so honestly never crossed my mind to bring a car seat on an airplane.

SPEAKER_00

But but yeah, I get it now. So anyway, here's here's some uh some travel stories from Fromers, the famous travel guides. Uh this one's called I'd rather the Bates Motel Any Day. Oh god. On a recent trip to San Francisco, I checked into a lovely new renovated hotel where I was looking forward to staying a few nights. While doing a quick turn of the round of the room, I noticed that the funky modern laps were so new they still sported tags. In fact, I observed they were so new they didn't even have any light bulbs in them. Well, I could have just done what anyone would have done in the situation and called down and asked for some light bulbs, but that's when I noticed there was no phone. Oh. So I took the elevator down 20 something floors to the front desk to explain the matter to the staff. They assured me that someone had come up while I was out at dinner to install some light bulbs and a phone. At that point, I believed them. I thanked them and went on my way. Upon arriving back in the room, though, I tried to turn on the lights, and none of the floor lamps worked. I searched by light of the bathroom fixtures for the cause of the problem. It seemed that now I had light bulbs, but the lamps were still not plugged in. And that's when I noticed there were no outlets in the wall. None in the whole room. Dude. Since I still didn't have a phone, I again took the elevator down to the lobby to tell the staff about the lighting debacle. They finally agreed to move me to a new room in which I was truly hoping to sleep peacefully. Well, once in my new room, I got ready for bed. At that point, I would have simply set the alarm and gone to bed, but that's when I noticed there was no alarm clock. I used my lamp light to dial the phone, baby steps, to request an alarm clock and was told that I'd be moved to a better room, and that the manager himself would personally assist in the move. In this third room, the lights had bulbs, they plugged into outlets and even turned on. There was a phone and an alarm clock. The manager left me, insisting that I was to call him immediately with any concerns I had whatsoever. I thanked him and unpacked. Again. Once ready to retire, I grabbed the blinds to block out the city lights for some much deserved shut-eye. I pulled and tugged, but they wouldn't budge. I searched for a polio, a rod, anything, and I finally found a cord for the blinds. Ah, so they were electric. I would simply use the controls to close the electropower drapes and gone to bed. But that's when I felt my way to the end of the cord and noticed unconnected wires dangled limply at the end, sprayed out in a jumble of colored plastic and glinting copper, far from being linked with any source of electricity. My excitement in having a phone began to dull because I called the front desk again and was hooked up with the electrician. When I asked him if he'd be able to install the blinds, he questioned how long the installation would take. On the verge of losing my cool, I told him that as the electrician, shouldn't he be telling me that? From there, the conversation arced into wide, meandering circles of logic. It was almost one in the morning now, and I knew that I have to call temporary truce in this Goldilocks War and just go to bed. But that's when I noticed, just kidding, I still had a bed and it was comfortable, if a little too well lit for a really great night's sleep. On the bright side, it was only the first night of my vacation. San Francisco was outside my hotel door, and there's always tomorrow. And that's from Alexia Myers, Traffiglini.

SPEAKER_01

Can I read this next one? Yep. This is my biggest fear when traveling.

SPEAKER_02

This is one of my biggest fears.

SPEAKER_01

This terrifies me too. Waterworks, it's called. It happened about four weeks into our six-week tour of India. Four weeks of eating street food, but carefully drinking and brushing my teeth with bottled water. It started slowly, then ripped through my body like a gale force hurricane, leaving me 10 pounds lighter in about a week. Yep, an attack of dysentery fell felled me in a cheap Indian hostel where the toilet seats were non-existent and the toilet paper was BYO. Worst of all, while flat on my back, woozy from coding coding?

unknown

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

And nauseated from forcing down electrolyte replenishing fluids, I would I was reduced to reading the last book in my backpack, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. It's a classic. Learn from my mistakes. If the doctor at the infirmi infirmary goes to the st uh, you go to on the street, offers you a discounted bus ticket immediately after selling you giant horse-sized mystery pills, head straight to the hospital and see a real doctor. Uh duh. Check the seal on your bottled water. Sometimes bottles are recycled and refilled, and you could be drinking non-purified tap water. If you've got the runs, try eating bananas and yogurt to settle your stomach. If you don't get better soon, head to a hospital. And finally, when you're feeling better, which you will quickly after starting the drugs, don't mix booze and antibiotics. That leads to a whole different kind of mess. Come on, girl. Also, don't eat don't eat yogurt when you have diarrhea. I it's the brat diet. Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. Come on, she must not have kids.

SPEAKER_00

I just do peptobismol.

SPEAKER_01

I don't do any medicine. I didn't take care of it.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, good. Pack eat a punch. Visiting a new place can be intimidating to some, which is why it helps to bring along something that reminds you of home. For some, it may be a candle or a blanket, but for me, it was a container of chocolate powder from my favorite coffee shop back home in Scottsdale. When I moved to Manhattan, I packed my life into two suitcases, one filled entirely with new clothes for my new life, and the box of cocoa powder so I wouldn't forget my old one. When I arrived at the airport, I was greeted by rain and waited almost two hours for a reserved super shuttle that never showed up. After spending 73 bucks on a cab, I made my way from Newark to the Upper West Side, where I was staying with a friend for a few days. I was exhausted and disheartened by my welcome to the big city, but determined not to let it ruin things. We decided that a night out would do the trick, so I went to my suitcase full of new clothes to find something to wear. When I opened the bag, I discovered that the box of chocolate powder exploded, covering every item from new jeans to a new purse with a thick layer of grainy powder. I thought a few shakes would do the trick, but it turned out only an $85 dry clean bill could fix things. So, how can you spill proof your vacation? New carry-on restrictions could have you packing items that would be better off hand carried. So when packing liquids ranging from shampoo to olive oil, wrap items in numerous plastic bags to prevent spills. If you're bringing along items in pressure sealed containers, poke holes in the top before wrapping them in bags, since air pressure can cause them to burst.

SPEAKER_01

Um, you know what I did once on a plane? I'm just gonna tell you my own this isn't really a horror story, but I had a flip-top water bottle, right, where like the straw comes up. Like all the water bottles I'm bringing on my trip tonight, and the pressure, you know, had changed. So I just like flipped open my water bottle lid and it went pew like a string of water, and it went two rows behind me across the aisle and hit like a guy's shoe. And I turned around and was like, I'm so sorry. And he was pissed. And I'm like, I literally like it was a splash of water. I don't know what to tell you. I'm so sorry. Okay, I went to a different site because y'all know how much I love Reddit.

SPEAKER_00

I know. I was looking for some of these Reddit ones. I couldn't find a good one.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, well, here's a good one. And then I'll tell you an anonymous related story to this orange juice, portrait of a ruined flight. I spilled a liter of orange juice on myself about three minutes into a 10-hour flight from Tokyo to Vancouver. I sat in a puddle of sticky orange juice for the entire time. Then, after a really rough landing, I get bad motion sickness. I puked on myself in the aisle waiting to de-plane. In hindsight, this was probably one of the worst for, or this was probably worse for whoever sat beside me and literally everyone trying to get off the plane. This is my worst nightmare. Being on a plane, I got offered a job as a flight attendant and I was like, I can't do this. I would be cleaning up bags of puke. And Aaron, my friend who's a flight attendant, was like, I mean, yeah, every once in a while you have to do that. She's like, but that is not the grossest thing you're doing. I'm like, oh well. Um, have you ever puked on a plane?

SPEAKER_00

No, I haven't.

SPEAKER_01

Me neither. Thank you.

SPEAKER_00

I'm terrified of it though.

SPEAKER_01

Me too. Very terrified. Someone near and dear to me, someone I know puked on a plane not too long ago in a middle seat. And then like someone gave her shit about it. No. It was so because I think it was like right at the I could be telling this wrong, but it I think it was at the beginning of COVID times. And so like two, it was multiple people were puking. So this other guy near them was like loudly barfing, like, you know, the horrid barfing. And um, my uncle happened to be on the flight and he offered him water, and the guy was like, no offense, dude, but like with this coronavirus going around. And my uncle was like, you're literally barfing your brains out sitting next to me. So like there's germs already, but thank you. And then, yes, someone else I know proceeded to quietly puke in a bag shortly thereafter. Um, because this person also, I think, was pregnant at the time, maybe, and it was just circling and lots of delays. And so, like, that is my hell. Being in a a tube of other people's germs with people barfing in bags around you.

SPEAKER_00

Travelers of Reddit, what's the scariest situation you've been in while traveling? I'm gonna bang out through some of these. When I visited Turkey, this is open water rescue. When I visited Turkey, some people stayed near a hotel, came out of their room and explained that they had eaten some cake offered to them by a fellow traveler, ostensibly for his birthday, and they'd fallen asleep for over a day. Only to find you, cleaned them out, passports, money, etc., and took off. Put me on my guard, that's for sure. Come on, people. Lies Molly. Went hiking in the Himalayas in Nepal when I was 18 with a friend. We were the only girls on the hike. The entire time on the first day, our Nepalese guide, probably early 30s married man, told us we were gonna have a chicken party when we got to our first night's stay in a village in the mountains. Not knowing what this was, we were very hesitant. Turns out chicken party meant that all the guys on our truck, guides and male trekkers alike, got hideously drunk and started ramming on our super thin wooden door with a cheap flimsy lock, clucking like chooks. We spent the whole night sitting with our backs pressing against the door to stop them coming in and doing god knows what to us. Oh my god. Dude, people have some common sense. I mean, this is these stories are all like y'all are idiots. X Sergio X pulled off a bus around 1 a.m. in the morning when I was traveling from Italy to Croatia. The guards at the border of Slovenia, I believe, stopped the bus. They got on the bus, which was dimly lit, and had their guns draw with lights illuminating from the end of their weapons. They were asking everyone for passports. Mine was in the undercarriage. I got dragged off the bus pretty roughly and was told to kneel on the ground while the driver looked for my baggage. Oh my god. There were about four or five officers, and one was behind me with his gun drawn toward me. Dude. Wow.

SPEAKER_01

Thanks for the lecture. Um, you guys, I do you have do you have more? Otherwise, I have something important to ask. Oh no, I don't have another one because this is making me so nervous to travel, to be honest. But I want to hear your horror travel stories. So we promise to share them and we promise to keep you anonymous if you want, but please send in your horror travel stories because you know we're in like spring break season, so I'm sure you've all got some. Or if you're creating new travel horror memories, that's even better. Let us know.

SPEAKER_00

Massive apricot. Traveling by bus across Java solo when I was 21, nighttime driving and heavy traffic. The bus pulls onto a rail crossing in gridlock. You guessed it. The light starts splashing and the barriers come down in front and behind the bus. We can't go forwards or backwards, and we can see the light from a fast approaching train coming toward us. Everyone started screaming and ran to the front door, banging on the glass and begging the driver to open the door. He either couldn't or wouldn't. Longest couple minutes of my life. I decided the front of the desk, the bus was certain death and went right to the back instead, and was contemplating at which moment I should start kicking the windows out when someone said, In Indonesia, which luckily I speak, it's on the other track. There was a moment where we all held our breath and the train passed inches from the driver's window in the front of the bus.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh. Okay, you guys. This is too much for me to handle. Please be done.

SPEAKER_00

I like the simple one. Saw this is by Kiwi Brie. Saw a guy murdered about 3 a.m. outside Rome's main railway station. This is back in the 80s. North African illegal immigrants got in a fight and three guys kicked and stomped another one to death. Oh my god. Like, I mean, jumped on his head until it crushed like a can. Oh my god. Plane engine about th plane engine malfunction about three hours into our flight. Ended up having to emergency land in the nearest country because the plane couldn't last on the engine ability it had. They called in all the fishermen and people out in boats from the water as they genuinely expected us to land in the ocean. They told them to prepare to look for survivors. That was a fun first flight experience. It was great to be told that the day before we had to get back on the plane to continue our journey.

SPEAKER_01

First flight. Oh, I'll tell you one of my travel. It's not like, you know, I didn't see a murder, but it did scar me. Uh, I was in Italy. I was backpacking in Italy with my one of my girlfriends, and we were just like enjoying a bottle of wine on our the stoop of our hostel, and we saw like this dude on a bike in an alley just like diagonal from us, staring at us. I'm like, this guy's gonna murder us, but we're just gonna sit here and keep drinking our wine because it was like a relatively well-lit street. But instead, he drove out on his bike and was masturbating to us as he rode by on his bike. As you do in Italy. What? Yeah, it it and we were like we were fresh out of college, but like this was our first big kind of solo thing. Yeah, it was great. Um, so that was fun.

SPEAKER_00

A man once offered my brother 10,000 camels for me. I was 14, my brother was for 17. You got a few other offers, but this was the most. We were in Morocco, my brother held my hand the entire time, so I wouldn't get snatched. It was pretty scary for my mom, my brother, and I. I like that. Three experiences in Japan. Nearly got lost in a skyscraper by taking a surface elevator to a random sub-basement hallway. What? Almost got locked inside a temple complex overnight because I forgot it closed at six. I nearly ran out of physical money at the end of the trip. And if it wasn't for some spare change, I wouldn't have had enough money to ride the train to the airport for my flight. These are all like low-key terrifying things to me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Running out of Yeah, like you can't get to the train to get to the airport. You get locked in the Man.

SPEAKER_01

You get locked in a building because you chose to take the service elevator. So tend us, send us your uh horror stories, funny travel stories like people masturbating in front of you. Oh, here's a good one. Fun fact, not the only time someone has masturbated in front of me. Um, also someone on the train in Chicago.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, good times. When I was in Thailand and I went to a crocodile show and bribed them $7 to let me play with the crocodiles. I hadn't slept for a few days, so I was an idiot. I got a badass photo of my kissing the crocodile, but in a hindsight, it's probably not a good idea, especially because the handler had scars all over his arms from being bitten.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god. Probably not a good idea.

unknown

I I wouldn't do that.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Well, we want to hear your stories. It's more fun when they come from people we know or that we feel like we know. So send them in hello at dinnerplusdrinks.com. Okay. We've made it. Shockingly, Art, can we move on, or do you have more? Oh, I was like, Do you have more? Are you excited here? I'm I'm anxious now about traveling in a mere few hours, so hopefully I'm not sending in my own.

SPEAKER_00

I'm excited we did this to you.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. This is your idea. I know it was. I was like, let's talk about horrible travel nightmares right before I travel with my family of four.

SPEAKER_00

Can we just touch on jambalaya real fast?

SPEAKER_01

No, yeah, both of us uh shockingly have the same dish. Jambalaya. What did you put in yours?

SPEAKER_00

Chicken and sausage.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so we did sausage and shrimp, and only because um the boys wanted the shrimp, to be honest. Um, they were like my dad, my brother-in-law, and my husband.

SPEAKER_00

How's the texture of the shrimp?

SPEAKER_01

I didn't need it. I made bourbon chicken on the side, so I pulled some out because I don't like like the jambalaya takes on the flavor of the smoked and dewy and the shrimp. And so before I added that, I pulled some out. That's smart. And then I put bourbon chicken in mine. Yeah, because I made this mistake uh in the previous year.

SPEAKER_00

I had a little bit more tomato tars because I like a little bit more tomato.

SPEAKER_01

I did exactly what the kit told me because I'm a cool follower.

SPEAKER_00

I I did a, you know, again, don't tell anybody I made a real lot of doing this, and I said I filed the instructions exactly.

SPEAKER_01

Liar!

SPEAKER_00

I added a little bit of um oregano when I added a little bit of tomatoes.

SPEAKER_01

I did stray from the directions in that I just had minced garlic already because I hate mincing garlic. I do the same thing. I did that and I added carrots.

SPEAKER_00

It was delicious. Interesting.

SPEAKER_01

I you know what? I called someone and asked them if that would be weird, and they're like, no, that's it would be weird. Why?

SPEAKER_00

That's not what goes with it.

SPEAKER_01

Well, it was delicious.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I'm glad you just more vegetables.

SPEAKER_01

Who the hell can't be like more vegetables?

SPEAKER_00

I'll add that in the recipe notes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so we put in carrots and but the real prize here was the Cafe Dumont Beignets. I know I took video to share with you because I was like, this is never gonna work. My whole house, for the record, it's not gonna work.

SPEAKER_00

It's not gonna work. It's gonna work.

SPEAKER_01

It still smells like jambalaya and oil. Like, I mean, Tyler wore his coat the other day to yesterday to work, and he was like, Oh my god, it smells like jambalaya. My kids' room smells like jambalaya. I'm like, what the hell? There are worse things to smell like. I know, it's gross. But jambalaya and beignets, man. That's what that's what we ate this week. That was bomb, and I homemade it all. Okay, I was real proud. Usually noodles and broccoli, okay. So that's what we ate. Nick and I both had jambalaya on our list, so um yeah. My dad asked me why I didn't make gumbo.

SPEAKER_00

I was like, well, sorry. Yeah, I'm just bringing up uh prop four. A prop? Yep, I'm gonna play this for people.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so do you need me to go or do you have it pulled up?

SPEAKER_00

I think I have it pulled up at least while we get done. Alright. So Simona's very into her ABCs. I don't know why the volume isn't working. Never mind. Anyway, so she's uh she's actually uh she can go like 75% on ABCs all by herself, no guide. It's pretty impressive. If you do it with her, she's like 90%. I'm impressed by her. I appreciate what uh what her teachers are doing. I don't know when we're doing good work. I definitely didn't know my ABCs at two and a half. So good work, baby girl. Proud of her. I feel like that is when you learn your ABC.

SPEAKER_01

I think it's like four. My kids have known their ABCs for years.

SPEAKER_00

Well, your kids are geni. So um, I was uh out doing something, and Sarah sent me a video of Simona singing the ABCs. I'm like, oh okay, this is cute, but I've seen this before. But wait for it. Sarah's like sitting there videotaping her, someone goes, A, B, C, Mama, get back. Pay attention. And Sarah's like, oh, okay, and takes a step back. D mama, go back. E F H I J Mama, sit here. And then she like runs halfway across the room. You sit here, listen to me, runs back, finishes her ABCs, and then Mama, come here. So it didn't really happen to me, but I'm just like, oh my god, this is hilarious. This is my future. Uh mama, go there.

SPEAKER_01

My child telling me what to do. My favorite part about the ABCs with kids is when they get to L M N O P and it's just like M M M N O P. That's what at least that's what it is with my Do you need to pee? An M N O P. I'm like, oh, are we peeing? How's potty training going? Uh, you know, stop start. I got a little down because some reason last night before Bad Elliott and I started looking at videos of like years ago, you know, like Google Photos says, like, remember years ago. And so we were looking at a video, and it was clearly when we had started potty training Elliot, because I saw like in the back of his pants, you know, I saw a diaper up on this video, and it was a pull-up. And it was in December. He did not actually potty train until June. Oh, wow. So, yeah, or the end of May. So I was like, oh yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But boys are harder than girls.

SPEAKER_01

Well, that's what I hear, but Lucy's been in pull-ups for a while. She pees at school, she tells us, or she'll Lucy's at the point where she now stands in the living room and she goes, Mom, I'm peeing. I'm like, let's go to the toilet. She's like, No, I'm peeing in my diaper.

unknown

Like, shit.

SPEAKER_01

Well, at least you know you're peeing. That's you know, progress. Anyway, that's that wasn't supposed to be what my kid corner was, but it was good. Um, I have a hundred things written down here. This is an Elliot Heavy Week. Elliot's birthday is coming up. So Elliot's birthday is next week.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Happy birthday, Elliot. Um, it's the middle of the week. So, like, you know, both weekends. This trip was kind of like a birthday trip, but you know, that's just a convenient timing thing.

SPEAKER_00

Um He's gonna want a trip every year for his birthday now.

SPEAKER_01

I know. I we haven't decided because they don't know he's gonna want a trip. Like, Elliot just knows we're picking him up early and he's like making guesses about what we're doing. So I'm having a hard time keeping this secret because I'm so excited about it. So I keep like teasing him to try and like, you know, get him excited about it. And all he cared about today, all he cared about, all he talked about last night, they had a teddy bear sleepover at school.

SPEAKER_00

This is incredible.

SPEAKER_01

It was so great. I'm like, do this every day. So they all had to bring a stuffed animal la yesterday. And then overnight, you were supposed to like see what kind of mischief the stuffed animals got into. So all night last night, Elliot's like, I can't wait to go to school. I'm like, I said, Oh, I'm so glad you like school. He's like, Oh, I don't normally like school. He's like, I just want to go tomorrow and see what my stuffed animal did overnight. All day today. Usually it's like a 20-minute battle to get him to put socks and shoes on and get out the door. And he's like, hey, mom, 20 minutes early today. Mom, can we go? Can we leave yet? And I was like, sure. We just sat in the car outside of school for 15 minutes until the bell rang. So super excited to go see what the teddy bears are up to. He's got like lots, this type of year, time of year is like always super exciting for us. Elliot's birthday, it's St. Patrick's Day. He's got lots of fun stuff coming up, so it's gonna be a couple heavy Elliot weeks. Heads up.

SPEAKER_00

Can't wait. So that's what we got for you guys. Well, again, send us all your travel horror stories. Bridget, I wish you safe travels.

SPEAKER_01

Tune in next week for my travel for my travel horror stories.

SPEAKER_00

Voyage for your uh vacation supprice.

SPEAKER_01

Thanks. Yeah, my vacation. All these very fancy Florida vacation.

SPEAKER_00

I bet they masturbate in front of women in public in France, too.

SPEAKER_01

And probably in Florida. Seems it's probably different country.

SPEAKER_00

You know, there's that uh modern family clip of um uh Sophia Vegara's character uh goes out to a restaurant with her husband who's much older than her. Yes. And they the waiter goes, Oh, uh, and is this your husband? And she goes, No, no, he's he's my husband. And Jay, her husband looks at him and they cut away, and she's like, That was when I need to kill myself because I knew I was old when they stopped assuming he was my boyfriend and not my husband. Because I looked too old, I looked close enough in age to him.

SPEAKER_01

I like that joke line in that show.

SPEAKER_00

So it's like, it's you know, it's like, you know, you're old when when they don't Well, when they don't masturbate in front of me again. I mean, that's just um they'll miss it when they don't do it.

SPEAKER_01

You know, uh, we'll see. Yeah, will I? Will I? Will I? They're not exactly like the claims.

SPEAKER_00

Florida man is the worst.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Florida. I don't know. Luckily, we're not like in the bulk of Florida. We're going to the panhandle. You go. I mean, right. I don't know if that's better.

SPEAKER_02

It's really really close to mobile.

SPEAKER_01

Um I have friends in Naples right now. She's like, come visit me. I'm like, we're pretty much as far away as possible from each other.

SPEAKER_00

But I think you'd be faster boating there.

SPEAKER_01

We'll just swim. We'll just take a quick swim. JK, she lives 30 minutes away from me in Wisconsin, so maybe I'll just see her there. Oh, that'd be even more fun. Thanks for listening, guys. We hope you have an awesome week.

SPEAKER_00

Follow us on the Instas and the Facebooks. Find us. And uh travel safely, Ridge. Thanks, Nip. Welcome home. Thanks. Talk to you guys soon. Bye bye.
