Textural Sensations - Dinner Plus Drinks #103
Bridget was in Seattle visiting a very special person and we recorded the episode remotely. Luckily, we were able to be joined by a very special guest for a fun game of Holiday trivia!
Here's what we talked about on this week's episode:
- Check out this BBC report about Kerala, the 103 year-old women who learned to read and write!
- A sober bar, cleverly named "Inmoxicated," is opening in Racine. It's a tough sell in Wisconsin, but we wish them well. Check out everything they have happening!
- If you want your tea fast, you need an Electric Tea Kettle! Bridget recommends this Hamilton Beach model.
- Nick is a watch wearer and his trusty Citizen Eco-Drive watch has been with him for many years. If you're looking to gift a quality watch that isn't insanely priced, check out their lineup.
Thanks so much for listening this week! We hope you enjoyed the Christmas trivia and played along with us. If you'd like together in touch with us, here are all the links:

~ Bridget and Nick
I am not. But you're in Seattle. Doesn't sound like a good movie. Well, everybody, we're remote today. It's a little lonely over here, Bridget. I miss you.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I'm so sorry. And the sound is probably a little different. My apologies.
SPEAKER_08Well, I think everybody should just be happy that you're taking some time out from your trip to do another episode of Dinner Plus Drinks.
SPEAKER_02I would never miss it. Never miss it. So what are you doing in Seattle? Well, my sister's uh my sister lives here, and she is gonna be having a baby in February, and I haven't seen her. So congrats, Brittany! Yeah, yeah, you she has been a guest on the show. Um, you know, I'm drinking out of my Troyanabed in the morning coffee mug. Um Troyanab. I know, I just want to sing it. Um, she's not coming home. So, because you know, COVID is still a thing, apparently. So we won't see her for the holidays. So my sister and I are each taking a turn coming out here to visit for like baby fun and holiday fun. So that's what I'm doing.
SPEAKER_08That is awesome. And I think we're gonna hear from Brittany later in a holiday themed segment. Teaser alert. Surprise. Doing anything fun in Seattle or just like hanging out, helping with the nesting, or what you doing?
SPEAKER_02Nesting is not my strong suit. Um, I'm not the sister to help with that. So I did um I took her yesterday to downtown into the city and went to this like adorable tea shop. It's called Queen Mary's Tea Room. And she's a big tea drinker. And, you know, in case you've never been pregnant or don't know, can't have a lot of caffeine, can't have any alcohol. So, you know, really cuts down on my activity options. Um, so we went and had like high tea, afternoon high tea, where we got like the three-tiered dessert platter and like a pot. We each got a pot of tea. It was adorable. Yeah, so lovely. Um, and then I'm also like the I call myself the Christmas mule, like a drug mule, but with Christmas gifts. Um, I flew out here with a whole bunch of gifts, and I'm flying with gifts. So I'm like a little Christmas elf.
SPEAKER_08Oh, you're just making Christmas bright and merry. That's a lot more fun. I think so. You didn't have to put anything in any weird places. Uh, did the cops stop you saying why do you have so much junk, or maybe you're stealing Christmas from Tokyo?
SPEAKER_02I mean, I have a pro tip. I I brought a baby like bassinet thing out here, and you get to fly with a free stroller or a free car seat. And so I just said, Yep, this is a stroller. And Alaska Airlines told me, they're like, You you know, you don't have to pay for this. And I was like, Yeah, I'm not paying for it. So that was great. That was a fun little, you know, $30 savings.
SPEAKER_08That is fun. We always, when we go to uh Napa, we always fly southwest because of the free checked bags. And on the way out there, we take empty wine shipper boxes, which are like $40 boxes. And the people at the airport are always so confused about why we are shipping empty boxes. And it's like, shut up, don't ask questions. On the way back, you load it up with wine, and it's free instead of hundreds of dollars of shipping expense.
SPEAKER_02Now, how has your week been? Have you missed me?
SPEAKER_08I've missed you terribly, Bridget. It's been it's been really hard. Uh my my darling baby daughter is becoming a terrible two toddler, and she's having some things where she's, you know, like you can tell there's changes, her brain's going faster than what she can all process, and and she's liking to do the opposite of what she's told. She's liking to push some boundaries, she's liking to do some things, you know. Maybe she learned them from Lucy, maybe not. Maybe it was the kid in daycare that always bites her. I don't know. There's this one kid, I'm not gonna name names, but I think you know who it is, Bridget. And um it's just it's just sad, it's sad. But it was also cute because like she ran through a she ran through a crowd of kids to get me and just like no F's given, like pushed them out of the way. Dad ass here. I'm like, oh, this is great. But also, like, hey Simona, can you say excuse me to your friends?
SPEAKER_02No, no, we cannot.
SPEAKER_08No, so it's just been a challenge. I feel bad. Yeah, it's like I've been working a lot because there's so much holiday push stuff. It feels like it's December 20th, but it's really only the 9th as we're recording because we have to have everything done. It's just very, very sad. That's how my day is going. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So it's great. Um, you know, Santa and his reindeer are in town this weekend, so you could, you know, bring some festive joy and head to that.
SPEAKER_08Oh my gosh, more on that later. But for now, I want to read you a headline. You said, you know, COVID is is still a thing, evidently. Well, you're not the only one that forgot about that. I just saw this headline before we went on here, and I was like, oh my god, I have to tell you this. The headline is Finland PM apologizes for clubbing after COVID-19 exposure.
SPEAKER_02Come on.
SPEAKER_08I'm so sorry. So this follows up on uh the Swedish female prime minister, new one. So Sana Marin, Finnish Prime Minister, uh, 36 years old. She was previously the youngest prime minister in the world, and then Austria now has a 33-year-old. Um she a photo surfaced of her at a nightclub following the foreign minister testing positive for COVID. She said um she was told she'd been exposed to coronavirus the day before, but uh the guidance was if you were double vaccinated like she is, you could you didn't have to quarantine. So her and her husband went out and she turned her phone off, and then everybody's clear like, hey, um actually don't go out. Don't go out. And she she's apologized, saying, quote, I did wrong. I should have considered the situation more carefully. But I mean, hey, she's 36, she's good looking, I'm sure her job's very stressful. Who doesn't want to go clubbing on a Saturday night, COVID or not?
SPEAKER_02I mean, I think I'm too old to go clubbing.
SPEAKER_08I it's Finland, it's probably different. It's probably more like a sauna, it's probably more like, you know, vodka and shill type of deal.
SPEAKER_02That sounds nicer, yes. Yeah, that's funny. I will say, everybody, Nick could not make a decision and has a second news story, which I also saw, and I'm excited for you to talk about because I want to know what you think about it. Um, but I'm gonna say mine first, then we're gonna go back to yours. So I started this outline like on Sunday or Monday because I saw this article that I just thought was so sweet. Um, there is a, I'm gonna butcher this name. Kutiyama is a 104-year-old woman in the southern Indian state of Kerala, and she's always wanted to go to school. She managed to learn to read and write at age 104. So I'm just saying, this is a great article to read. You feel like you are like too late in life to do what you really want. Think of this lady. She um she'd been wanting to do it since she was a kid. Yes, and she got 89 marks out of 100 in the official literacy test, which is like probably better than I would do. So good job.
SPEAKER_08Way to go. That's really cool. Yeah, so also like very sad four years not being able to read her write.
SPEAKER_02Yes, also very sad, but hey, it ends nicely. She didn't die before she learned how to do it.
SPEAKER_08That's true. It would have been very tragic if she was like halfway through or waiting for the results on her test and she died.
SPEAKER_02That would have been terrible.
SPEAKER_08My second news story, I've seen this in a lot of places. Um, it would be great for Brittany right now, but there is a new sober bar opening in Racine, which is very close to us, and it's called Inmoxicated. Kudos for the dad joke of a name. Um, have you seen the pictures of the guy that's opening it?
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_08He looks like a hipster, like a total hipster, slash punk, slash like bear, slash all these things together. He looks like the type of guy that would open a mocktail bar. So it's evidently, if you haven't heard, Wisconsin is rated very highly on our drinking talent. Um, but there's also a lot of people that have decided to be sober, and it can it can be hard, obviously, to be sober in Wisconsin, where the bars are very encouraging of, you know, we have like bar dice for free drinks. So Inmoxicated has all the things you like about the bar with none of the alcohol. All of the bar dice, the pool, the darts, and all mocktails. I support sobriety. This is great, but I'm here to tell you mock tails suck. End of story. I wish this guy well, but I don't think it's gonna work. Bar games aren't fun unless you're joking.
SPEAKER_02I I don't know if Racine is the place for it, but I'm sure he did his market research. Um, I I love the idea because, like, when pregnant, for example, I have twice not been drinking for a year at a time. And yeah, you kind of just like feel shunned, um, especially in Wisconsin, and you're like, oh, you walk into a bar pregnant, which I have done because like I would just go and get a sprite, you know, or a lemonade, and people look at you like you're insane. I'm like, I'm not here to drink, but I am here to be social because I'm a human being that likes to be social. I'm on board with this. I want to go.
SPEAKER_08I mean, I just I I wish him luck. I I agree with you, but I just I don't like mocktails. And I I don't know. It's just I are people gonna have fun. I mean, mocktails are also expensive. So, like, are people gonna be fun with it? I don't know. Bars are fun because you're drinking. But I guess you know, sober people what I would suggest is they have good coffee. Oh, yeah, yeah. So they need good smoking lounge, good and nicotine. You know, you still can have uh tobacco vending machines, those are still legal. Everything else is illegal, but you can have a tobacco vending machine.
SPEAKER_02What? Oh, yeah, actually, I guess, yeah. I've it's not my thing. Never cruise something.
SPEAKER_08You have to take a bartender test, and you also have to know how to safely sell cigarettes. Why? Yeah, why?
SPEAKER_02Because bars often sell them out of a vending machine.
SPEAKER_0830 years ago. So it's still it's still legal, but anyway, we are going to take a break. We have some awesome Christmas gift suggestions, and then we'll be back again with Christmas trivia, sister versus sister. Special guest.
SPEAKER_02Be right back. Okay, we are back, and I have a ridiculous product suggestion. Are you ready, Nick?
SPEAKER_08I am ready, I want to hear this.
SPEAKER_02Which I know, it's really not that ridiculous, but it is ridiculous coming from me. So I've had many people recommend this to me, and I've rolled my eyes, but I've come to love it now. A um electric tea kettle, okay? This is a plug-in, boils your water like in a minute. I know, and I know you say don't buy women gifts that plug in. Well, that's wrong. Okay, this plugs in and I want one. Um I have been making coffee here in a percolator. So pour over coffee because my sister is not drinking fully caffeinated coffee and I can't have that in my life. So um I am making that, and so this not only makes my delicious evening peppermint tea very quickly, because it's hot, hot, hot. I usually just boil it in a pan, like on the stove, but this gets done in a fraction of the time, and I'm a nerd, and now I want one.
SPEAKER_08I've never heard that don't buy woman something that plugs in. Yes, I've never heard that. Are you serious? What?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like don't buy them a vague because they're water. I know, it's just like an age-old saying.
SPEAKER_08Like uh the hair iron thing I heard as like a nice fancy upgrade on Yes, I mean it's a silly thing now in the modern day.
SPEAKER_02But this you're right. And I wouldn't spend money on this because I could just boil water in a pan, but it's a good gift for like if you want to also give someone maybe their favorite coffee grounds and a coffee mug and this or tea and a teacup. A little gift box. A themed gift. A little gift box, see? I love a good theme.
SPEAKER_08My suggestion is uh we usually try to keep these fairly affordable, reasonable. Uh, I'm hitting the 175 mark on on this one. So if you have someone in your life that likes watches, uh like myself, I wear a watch every day. I've tried the smart watches, I just can't do them. I have to use an analog watch, specifically, usually one of these. It's a Citizen EcoDrive. Uh they are great watches. I've had this for 10 years, maybe. Uh the band still holds up well, and it is powered by the sun. You don't have to ever replace the battery. I thought this was some like gimmick that like you had to like hold it up to bright lights and stuff. But no, in the course of your everyday, it charges itself, never slows down. It's a fine piece of Japanese engineering. It's not cheap. You can get cheaper ones, but it's it's really, really well made. Mine's a chronometer, so I like timing things. I use it for that a lot. Uh, why not use your cell phone, Nick? Because maybe you're reading something from your cell phone and having to time yourself as you read it because you're writing a radio script at the last minute and you need to do it very fast. So if you if you ever need a chronometer, this is great. Um, so yeah, I would just say these are great watches. There's a lot of styles available. I'm gonna link to one that I have and love. But if you're looking to get a nice watch for someone in your life, they have men's styles, ladies' styles. You can just get a nice citizen eco drive.
SPEAKER_02That's a great recommendation.
SPEAKER_08Thanks, Bridget. I appreciate it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think great job. Look at these gift giving ideas, guys. Think about them, and we'll be right back with a very special segment. We're back. Did you miss my singing? We just have to do everything Christmas eating at this time, right? That's right. So I sing we're back, and Nick seems fall la la la la. So I've changed my camera angle because we are having a special guest join us right next to me. Brittany, please join us.
SPEAKER_03Oh ho ho ho.
SPEAKER_08That was the perfect difference. Oh my goodness. Wow. Well, welcome, Brittany and and child. Um, for those of you that were watching on YouTube.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there you go.
SPEAKER_08You guys, yeah, you missed out. Uh Brittany entered has a festive Santa Claus sweater on, complete with big round belly, uh, that entered the picture first. And wow, what an entrance. Brittany, that was that was incredible. I can see you're you're digging into this season of of jollliness.
SPEAKER_02And you see, um Brittany is not just fat, we're not being mean. She is six months pregnant, so she is taking the Santa festive wear to the next level. Okay, so maybe we should link this product next time. Oh, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Found the good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, found a good bill. Found it good. What do you got for us today, Nick? Yeah, what am why am I here?
SPEAKER_03Other than to bring Christmas. We love a lot.
SPEAKER_08All the Christmas cheer, sister versus sister competition. So I have 10 questions of Christmas trivia. Here's the rules. We have four categories, all right? Food and drink, movies and books, songs, and traditions. Um, we're gonna do this a little fun because it'd be too easy to get a tie and we don't want to tie. So I came up with some arbitrary surprises to make sure we don't get a tie and hopefully cause a fight between you two that you can settle over whatever you do out there. So each question has a the one I think is the hardest, has a 2x multiplier. So you could get two points for one question in each category. And to even further complicate it, after I read one of the questions, you can say, I want to five X this one. So you can get five points for a question of your choosing if you choose to choose it. But you have to get it right.
SPEAKER_015x. But we hear the question first before we can choose to 5x.
SPEAKER_08You hear the question first. I'm not gonna make it that complicated. You can hear the question, and then if you really think you have that one, 5x. 5x. So you guys uh just write down your answer or remember your answer. I will read it to you, give you a few seconds to come up with your answer, and then um I'll have I'll have you read what your answers are and total up the points. So uh that's how we'll do it. Does that sound good? Everyone understand the rules.
SPEAKER_05Uh Bridget's gonna grab a pen so we can write.
SPEAKER_08Pens are good. Pens are good, pencils also work. I have a Sharpie. Yeah, smells delicious.
SPEAKER_05Great. Okay, I hope you didn't cheat. Uh no, he has not cheating.
SPEAKER_08Are you ready for the first question? We're gonna start with the food and drink category. And this one, this one I hope you know, Bridget.
SPEAKER_02Oh shit.
SPEAKER_08Which popular Christmas beverage is also called milk pudding? I'm sorry, milk punch, not milk pudding. Wait, can you shall it sour? Which popular Christmas beverage is also called milk punch?
SPEAKER_02Are we holding up the answer for you to see?
SPEAKER_08No, because it's gonna be backwards and I'm not good at reading backwards. True. So I'll just trust you guys. Okay, okay. You guys ready?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_08Bridget, what's your answer?
SPEAKER_02Eggnog.
SPEAKER_08Correct.
SPEAKER_02It's a bit of a delay here. Umunds terrible.
SPEAKER_03Also, my answer. One point milk pudding. One point each. Ding ding ding. Congratulations.
SPEAKER_08Next audio. What is the name of the mold red wine served at Chris Kindlemark's?
SPEAKER_02Oh, ooh, ooh. Oh, oh, got it, got it. I almost said it, and Brittany had written it down. I got it, I got it. I don't know if I spelled it right. Well then it's wrong. Brittany, what do you have? Are you ready? Yes.
SPEAKER_05I have glue. Glue one.
SPEAKER_08One point each. I know it's your favorite drink in the world, Bridget, so I just I picked that. And now it's a two-point category. This is for two points. This is the last one in our food and drink category. The question is what beverage company was the first company to use Santa Claus in ads.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I have a I have a guess. Mine is also an educated guess. Yes. Bridget, what do you have? We've written the same thing down again, and we have both I cheated and looked at her paper. We've both guessed Coca-Cola. It's true. You're both right.
SPEAKER_08Wow. Points in the food and drink category. Four points each. Next you're on to songs. And there's only two questions in this one. This one's, you know, kind of easier.
SPEAKER_03What is it? First question.
SPEAKER_08What color Christmas is Elvis having?
SPEAKER_01Oh. Don't I know it? I'll have it.
SPEAKER_04You guys can see the inscription. Without you.
SPEAKER_02Do we get extra points for singing?
SPEAKER_08Well done. What? Yes, I'll give you a bonus point each for that. So we'll give you two points each for that.
SPEAKER_05Great. That gives us.
SPEAKER_08You know what? I'm gonna make this since I did two for that one. I'm gonna make this one worth four points. Because this is, I think, the hardest of all of it. Within twenty, how many total gifts were given in twelve days of Christmas?
SPEAKER_04Oh shit. Oh man, our dad would know the answer to this.
SPEAKER_05I mean, Matt, it's hard. How long do we get? I'm just gonna guess the number.
SPEAKER_03Bridget, what is your guess?
SPEAKER_02Seventy. Brittany. One forty-four.
SPEAKER_08You guys both get zero points. It is three hundred sixty-four.
SPEAKER_03What? Three hundred sixty-four. I know. I was like, oh that's up quickly. Okay, you know right. So tied at six points.
SPEAKER_02We haven't had a lot of coffee yet this morning.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Now remember you both still have your five-point multiplier. Whoever uses it first puts pressure on the other to make sure they match or not match. So we're into movies slash books. First question. How many ghosts appear in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol? Is this a trick?
SPEAKER_01I know, that's what I was like. Oh, I haven't seen it. I'm not gonna five X's because I might be getting tricked. Oh, trick write it down.
SPEAKER_04I know, I do feel like this is a trick.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So I'm just gonna go with the straightforward answer. Yeah. We're both gonna go with three.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna say it's four.
SPEAKER_08That is incorrect. It is four.
SPEAKER_04Is it four? Yeah, damn it!
SPEAKER_08Jacob Marley, Christmas past, Christmas present, and Christmas future.
SPEAKER_04Oh Jacob Marley Marley. I knew there was four. Jacob Marley.
SPEAKER_08I know I forgot about that when I was doing the research. I was like, oh yeah, Jacob Marley. Alright, this next one.
unknownGosh.
SPEAKER_08But which version? The Muppets one is my favorite. No, I hate the Muppets.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Almost as much as long as it's not a cartoon, I'm I think I'll be okay to watch it. Brittany doesn't like sad cartoons.
SPEAKER_02I can't. I'll cry.
SPEAKER_08What is the highest grossing Christmas movie ever?
SPEAKER_02Well I have two guesses. Do you want to hint? This is a hard question.
SPEAKER_08This is a hard question. Well, I have I don't think we deserve hints.
SPEAKER_03I don't know how to do that.
SPEAKER_08We've recently discussed it on the podcast.
SPEAKER_02Oh he's behind and he's not caught up. Also, I don't remember to be. Okay, I'm just gonna. Yeah, I'm just gonna go with what I know. I went with my first guess. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04What are you guessing? What is it?
SPEAKER_08That's a logical guess. Very recent blockbuster. It is home alone. Is it Marathon 34th Street?
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. Marathon 34th Street was my other guess.
SPEAKER_00Shannon would be so disappointed. Oh, dang. I bet Shannon would get that right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Sorry, we're the worst.
SPEAKER_08Three questions have we are we're at our last movie/slash book question. This is worth two points, or if you 5x it, 10 points. This could be a game changer right here. What real life department store is Miracle and 34th Street based on?
SPEAKER_04I don't know about I ever seen that. It's a classic. I know! I just Okay. It's really cute.
SPEAKER_00Okay, did we guess the same thing again?
SPEAKER_04We both guessed Macy's.
SPEAKER_00You're both correct!
SPEAKER_04Hey!
SPEAKER_02Have you never seen that movie? No, I don't think so. We have a lot of movies to watch today, I guess.
SPEAKER_08Two points each. Man, I tried to make this so there'd be some separation. You guys are tied going into the last two questions, which are traditions.
SPEAKER_04Very similar.
SPEAKER_02I was like, wait, this was gonna be all music. And I was like, I we're just I I have a question. I'm raising my hand. Um can we both 5x the question?
SPEAKER_08Yes, you can. It's strategy. The good strategy would have been to 5x very early and put pressure on, but you know, it's okay.
SPEAKER_02Well, you know, who do we want? We were warming up. I was gonna 5x the Macy's because Britney was unclear. Yeah, oh you should have. I know. Damn. Yeah. I chickened out.
SPEAKER_08All right, two questions left. And if you're tied, I'm gonna have to come up with a bonus one. Um which country started the tradition of putting up Christmas trees? And Brittany, your Christmas tree is so pretty. I saw a picture of it because we were looking at something we're gonna discuss later. And I was like, oh, it's such a pretty Christmas tree.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's so cool. Ah, yeah. Oh, sorry, I just kicked our computer screen. I I uh Jesus, but Jesus, we guessed the same thing again. What'd you guess? Just but Jesus. Germany. You're both correct. Okay. Okay, well, I guess we're all both fivexing our final answer. Oh shoot, yeah. This went so fast.
SPEAKER_08I thought this might be a good question to play into. I thought the miracle on 34th Street shopping would play into Bridget's strengths, and I thought this one, uh, it's a geography and history-based question, might play into Brittany's strengths. So let's see. Let's see how this goes. And what modern-day country was St. Nick born in?
SPEAKER_04Oh my god.
SPEAKER_08And this is the two, so this is for 10 points. I don't, I don't actually And while you guys think, I'm gonna Google another trivia question in case you guys get this wrong.
SPEAKER_02I just read about this. I can see the article I read, like I can see the words, and I can't remember.
unknownOh my god.
SPEAKER_05Uh uh. Is there a question of what country?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. In what modern day country? Alright. We might have different answers for this.
SPEAKER_02We definitely have different answers because mine is a complete guess. Well, so it's mine.
SPEAKER_01Alright, what's what's your guess? Sweden, Denmark. You're right, I think. Turkey!
SPEAKER_05Oh! Not even close.
SPEAKER_08Okay, we're going into overtime. Oh man. Oh man, I had an idea of one.
SPEAKER_03Okay, we're gonna go with uh a modern one.
SPEAKER_08Where did the word and idea Chris maca came come from? Which television show?
SPEAKER_04Oh.
SPEAKER_02Oh man. I have a guess. Oh, I should write it down, sorry.
SPEAKER_01I mean there's like three guesses. Yeah. Alright.
SPEAKER_02Okay, we have different guesses. Yeah, and these that might be your guess is friends. My guess is friends.
SPEAKER_03Nope.
SPEAKER_04No, no, Brittany!
SPEAKER_03My guess was Seinfeld.
SPEAKER_08Nope, it's the OC. Remember Seth? He came up with this to celebrate his mixed heritage. All right. This one might actually break the tie.
SPEAKER_04Okay, okay, okay. We're in OT here.
SPEAKER_08Double OT. Three of Santa's reindeer's names begin with the letter D. Write down three names that start with D, and you get a point for each one you get right. Only the D ones.
SPEAKER_04Only the D ones. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Get it. Go ahead. I did not. Dasher, Dancer, and Donner. You got them all! I have a question. Is it Donner or Donner?
SPEAKER_07I think it's Donner. Donner. This is around. Oh.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. So Brittany B. Well then did I do it wrong?
SPEAKER_02Like because I spelled it as Donner. And I wrote Donner and Dancer, but I did not get the other one. Dasher, it's the first one. I know I didn't.
SPEAKER_08Let me let me uh let me Google Donner or Donner.
SPEAKER_02Brittany can win. She's in the most festive gear, so she probably gets a point for that. And my RGB shirt probably not a point for festive.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, here's the story. This is from a Syracuse.com article about reindeer. Originally, the poem was in Dutch or German or something. And it was originally Dunder. And then it changed to Donner. Yep, so it's D-O-N-N-E-R. So okay, I guess we gotta go to Triple O T.
SPEAKER_05In English. Triple O T. Starting to sweat up in here. Yeah, yeah. Let's see, let's see.
SPEAKER_08Okay.
SPEAKER_02Really glad.
SPEAKER_08No, that one's too hard to not sing.
SPEAKER_02Hallmark movies.
SPEAKER_08Hallmark movies. In the meta, we can build a snowman and pretend that he is Parson Brown.
SPEAKER_03Ah Alright, quadruple OT. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_08I'm sweating. In Home Alone, the highest grossing Christmas movie of ever. The original one. Where is the McAllister family going on vacation when they leave Kevin behind?
SPEAKER_04Uh oh, do we both know this? Yeah, I think we do.
SPEAKER_08I don't know if it's yeah, Paris. Ah, pardy. Uh, you would have got bonus points if you have said pardy.
SPEAKER_01Oh well, shoot. Dommage.
SPEAKER_08Man, Quintuple over time. Uh, let's see. Let's see.
SPEAKER_01It's almost as if we grew up like in the very same culture. Like watching all the same down to the living room.
SPEAKER_03Let's see. Let's see.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I'm trying to.
SPEAKER_02Nick, your microphone looks like a mistletoe. Nick, I could come up with a question, but that would be unfair.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_08You're a player. That would be unfair. I'm just trying to come up with one that like one of you is gonna get and one of you not. How do you say Merry Christmas in Hawaiian?
SPEAKER_02Malikaliki Maka.
SPEAKER_08That was an easy one.
SPEAKER_03I was just going for time.
SPEAKER_01I get points to have I have relatives in Hawaii. No points.
SPEAKER_02Do I get points for thinking of the movie from uh Clark Griswold watching the girl get out of the pool? That's what everyone thinks of when they hear that song now. You don't? No. You never seen that movie? I don't know what your specification is. Oh, Clark Criswald.
SPEAKER_08Which famous American inventor invented the electric Christmas light in 1880?
SPEAKER_02Who do you think is gonna get this, for me? I mean Okay.
SPEAKER_01Got one? Great. Is it the same? No, I just wrote in like no, Trisha he's dead.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he was dead. Yeah, he was dead.
SPEAKER_02I was pretty sure he was dead.
SPEAKER_00So I said you said electric light, and I said Thomas Edison.
SPEAKER_03Yes! You win! Yeah! It's over! It's over!
SPEAKER_02Brittany's sweating in a sweater! I was gonna quiz you on the Christmas song from Love Actually. Christmases all around us.
SPEAKER_01Oh, the the Christmas, well, the song from Love Actually, I remember is um Joni Mitchell's.
SPEAKER_02Yes, Brittany hates Love Actually. She thinks it's been sad.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh, I knew you wouldn't get it. I've only seen it once, and I just I was so scared. Okay. All right. Well great job. Good game.
SPEAKER_04Good game.
SPEAKER_08Thank you for playing. Congratulations. I'm so proud that we ended this finally.
SPEAKER_02We ended it, and your prize is Bunch of Meat. Bunch of meat. I did five the country meats meat for her. I mean, for not her, for her in-laws.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, my in-laws. Yeah. Yeah. They really loved the meat from Lake Shabu Country Meets last year. Great.
SPEAKER_03Thanks for purchasing me.
SPEAKER_05Thanks for having me, everyone.
SPEAKER_02Toodaloo, Brittany. But I'm still here. Don't worry, guys.
SPEAKER_08Well. We talked about how we saw her beautiful Christmas tree. And why did I see her beautiful Christmas tree, Bridget?
SPEAKER_02Because I had to take a photo of the best food that I'm loving this week, which is a giant macaron, a French macaron. And okay, I think I've maybe talked about them on here. I don't know, but even my kids know that we're just gonna say macaroon for now. Uh that macaroons are my favorite cookie, is what Elliot always says. And so at this tea place we went to yesterday, they have a macaron, a French macaron, probably like what did you say six inches, Nick? I don't know. I send him I had to send him a picture to prove at least six inches. Yeah, it was massive. I mean, amazing. So we're like, how do we take a picture of the scale? So um I got a mixed berry uh shell. Yeah, well, you know, how why would we do that? A festive photo, we'll put it by the tree. Um, it was a wild berry shell and a chocolate interior, and it was so good and so amazing. And they had five other flavors. I wanted them all, but that seemed a little excessive. Um, but it was just so fun. It was like a tourist attraction in and of itself.
SPEAKER_08I don't think that's excessive. Having that many macarons, macarons on Christmas vacation while you're being a tourist. I think that's what the season's all about. Indulge, treat yourself, absolutely nothing wrong with that.
SPEAKER_02I appreciate it. I imagine you ate something more substantial.
SPEAKER_08I did, in fact. I had some delicious slow cooker carnitas, uh, pork in the you know, slow cooker and tread it and then fry it up in the fat that you cooked off. And what was special about these was Sarah got the street size taco shells. And she came to the realization that I've known for a long time that the street size are the ideal size for tacos. It is the perfect ratio of stuff to shell, tortilla. It's not too much. You can hold it perfectly in your hand. They are a handheld food, for God's sake. These huge tortillas that you have to fold into burritos, burritos are great, but I they're not tacos. When I want a taco, all I want is my little handheld bite, yum, yum, yum, yum, yum. Tacos were delicious. We had all of the different uh toppings. I remembered to pickle red onions ahead of time, so they were nice and crispy and crunchy to provide a textural uh sensation to go with the the pork. So, you know, pork's a little fatty, and and then you got the crispy onion. It was it was so good. I loved it. God bless tacos, God bless us everyone.
SPEAKER_02I think the name of this episode needs to be Textural Sensation.
SPEAKER_08Textural Sensations. All right, got it. Yep, duly noted. Check writing it down.
SPEAKER_02That was a really great description of your tacos.
SPEAKER_08Thank you. I appreciate that, Bridget.
SPEAKER_02Great job.
SPEAKER_08Well, now it's time for our last segment segment, and we'd normally sing it together, but given we have a slight touch of delay, I think you should sing it first, and then I'll add some echo. How does that sound?
SPEAKER_02I was wondering. So here we go, guys. It's time for Kid Corner. Kid Corner.
SPEAKER_03I hope you all enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_02This is our best episode yet.
SPEAKER_03As much as I do. All right. Um, do you want to go first? Do you want me to go first?
SPEAKER_02Well, I'll go because yours is festive and mine is only kind of. Um, so we had this past weekend. So before, after we recorded last week, if we talked about the holiday parade was in town, our Christmas parade, which is so fun. Um, so we had some extended family in town. Like all of our cousins and aunts and uncles came in for a little bit of a reunion. We haven't seen each other. The parade is outdoors, it felt safe. Um, but we uh we skipped Lucy's nap that day because there was like tons going on, all our cousins were around. Um, but she was getting really tired, and my one uncle doesn't have any grandkids yet and was very excited to be playing with Lucy. Um, we stopped into Topsy Turfey to grab a beer, so into the local brewery right before the parade started. And he we I had Lucy in the wagon, but he picked Lucy up. She fell dead asleep in his arms in a brewery, and all so like she fell dead asleep. We put her down in the wagon, she was sleeping, and all my cousins are from like the Chicagoland area, think it was like hilarious to have my like sleeping two-year-old in a brewery. They're like, This is the most Wisconsin thing, and it was funny, it was hilarious, it was adorable. It was cute to see her like loving on this uncle who was so fun with her. So, nothing embarrassing or silly, just Lucy asleep in a brewery.
SPEAKER_08Aww, little Lou. It was adorable. Mine is holiday themed. We also went the Wisconsin route, and Simona's first visit with Santa Claus was at a wine bar. Yes, of course. Our good friend, our good friend Beth, owner, proprietor of the bottle shop in Lake Geneva, had Santa Claus in her wine bar. And it's a very family-friendly place. We go there. We figured this might be a good place for Simona to have her time with the big man. You know, everybody's seeing the terrified children pictures, and we hoped we could get a nice picture. No. She screamed, she shouted, she tried to jump out of her mom's arms to run away. She tried to climb back into her mom, she tried to burrow into her mom. She did not want dad around at all. But the Santa Claus was incredibly kind, very patient. He got a nice picture of him standing a non-threatening distance away from her, smiling. Uh Simona kind of smiled. But then the best part is we were eventually able to get some pictures of him delivering him lists because uh Simona just hung out across the room, watched him very carefully for about 30 minutes, moved a little closer to him, started writing out lists with uh with some other children in the area. She started writing them out. Uh, shout out to Emily's twins. Thank you very much for helping girls. That was very kind of you. And then she'd run up and deliver a list and run away. And by about the fifth time, she actually stood there and got a picture with him and said, Thank you, Santa. So shout out to Santa Claus, shout out to everybody that helped with that. Eventually we got a picture. It was adorable, but my god, was it like too much, too much? Terrifying. Too much.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_08Do you remember when people used to go to a mall and stand in line?
SPEAKER_02But then you just feel bad. You're like, oh, I brought my kid for this fun, festive thing. But actually, they're terrified because I'm making them sit on a stranger's lap.
SPEAKER_08Makes sense. Makes sense. Well, everybody, on that very festive note, I think we're gonna wrap up this week's episode. Thank you so much for listening. We're gonna be back next week with more festive fun, and we'll be reunited. I'm sure it'll feel so good.
SPEAKER_02Reunited once again. Thanks for listening, and don't forget to uh rate and subscribe us. Uh, check us out on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram at Dinner Plus Drinks Podcast.
