Run Away from Tornados? | Dinner Plus Drinks #47

Loyal listeners, we want to know are you Team Bridget (stay and cower in basement) or Team Nick (drive away from a tornado and not die) when it comes to tornados? We're still not sure if we had a for real tornado in Lake Geneva, but we sure had a big storm, and it caused some MAJOR debate on this episode of Dinner Plus Drinks. As always, we want to know your feedback, so be sure to hit us up and let us know your thoughts!

Here's what else we have on this episode:

  1. Nick made a delicious Cranberry Orange Fizz cocktail. It was refreshing but also very Thanksgiving. The recipe is 4 parts cranberry juice + 2 parts gin + 1 part triple sec + 1 part orange juice. Shake to combine, pour over ice, and top with cranberry Sprite (or similar soda). You can also garnish with frozen cranberries or muddled thyme!
  2. Bridget was incredibly inspired this week by Chris Nikic becoming the first person with Down Syndrome to complete an Ironman. This is an incredible accomplishment and you can learn more about Chris and support his 1% Better Challenge by visiting his website.
  3. Nick thought this story about the use of analytics in high school football was fascinating. Do you think too many resources are being put into high school sports? Let us know, we debate this subject a lot! Click here to read the article from the NY Times.
  4. Bridget highly recommends BestStamps4U - a local small company - for making custom stamps for Holiday gifts. It's a thoughtful, unique, and useful gift!
  5. Nick is excited that our friends at The Candle Mercantile in Lake Geneva have their Holiday scents out. They're open for local pickup and also ship all over the country!
  6. Bridget is excited to try these Roast Beef Cheddar Pockets for Sunday football snacks.
  7. Nick is all over these Bourbon Glazed Steak Bites. They're so yummy!

Thank you so much for listening! If you can please subscribe, rate us, review us, and share with your friends, we'd really appreciate it. SPEAKER_01

Hello, everybody. Welcome to the newest episode of Cocktail Hour with Nick. Ooh, he means dinner plus drinks. The podcast where we're gonna offload on some of the crazy things that have happened this week. But first, because this takes a while, Nick is gonna make a cocktail.

SPEAKER_00

Nick's gonna make a cocktail. What when I say, well, I say, excuse me, one quick political thing. We won't get too crazy about that, but I'm sure unless you were living under a rock, you heard, you know, about the big election and also about four seasons. And not the hotel, but the total landscaping. So it's funny. I'm sorry if you can't find this funny, you need to find a spot for a little more joy in your life. So I just saw a thing on NPR this week that said on Sunday night, four seasons total landscaping rolled out a line of t-shirts, hoodies, and stickers featuring slogans like, quote, lawn and order and quote, make America Rake again. And on Monday, it started offering face masks. By Tuesday, every single thing had sold out. So this is funny, okay? Uh whatever side you fall on, I think it's great that this little landscaping company has managed to, I'm sure, increase their business and also sell out a line of a whole bunch of hilarious things. So great job, four seasons total landscaping. Did you read that? I did.

SPEAKER_01

I found that hilarious. I don't know, funny. Do we think that the Trump campaign thought it was actually a four seasons? 100%. Is that a question? That's what makes it funny. I mean, I thought maybe it was just like in a convenient place. But then also the chutzpah to carry through on having the press conference there when you realize it's not.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, and that it was by what, a adult like a porn store, right? And a crematorium, right? Okay, anyway, I'm sure you've all read that. We won't talk about it much more. But we had some exciting weather happen in Lake Geneva. We're gonna get real boring and talked about the weather, except it's actually very exciting.

SPEAKER_01

I think it's very exciting.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I do too. Oh, sorry, I should have taken the top off that. Um, we had a tornado this past week. Did we really though? Well, okay, I knew you were gonna question that, so I should look up where it touched down. But we had enough of a tornado that like I peed my pants a little. Like it, I also decided um it was at the end of workday-ish, you know, and I was at Lake Geneva Country Meets. So I work from home a lot, but I happen to be there. Um, but I was talking with my sister a lot, and we're like, okay, I think we can wait this weather out. I don't know. So she said, yeah, yeah, it's gonna hit at five o'clock. I'm like, cool, it's 4 15, I can leave. So I started driving directly into the tornado. I have a photo to show you exactly what I mean, which Nick will be sure to post. Um, so anyway, I drove directly into this tornado and Shannon is calling me. My sister's calling me in the meantime, sobbing because she's in the middle of it as well, on the other side of it. Um, we're five minutes away from one another, but she she needs to go to my house because her house is too far away to get to, but like my key is in a lockbox, it's a whole thing, right? So she and I were just trying to make it to each other. And I live and die by the movie Twister and all of its really great advice. So we were talking the other day, Nick and I and our friend Mike. Do you keep driving in the tornado? Do you try and outrun the tornado? Do you get out of your car and lay in a ditch like they do in Twister? Nick, tell everyone what you would do. First of all, Nick thinks tornadoes are this big. And if you're only listening and not watching, I'm showing about a six-inch circle on my hand.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, I know they're not literally that big. I'm saying in the grand scheme of things, they're not a hurricane. They're not many miles across, okay?

SPEAKER_00

They can be a mile, which is not small. Uh-huh. So we had a long argument about how tornadoes are small and uh you can outrun it.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so get in your car. You can yes, tornadoes change direction. Don't at me, bro. But you can see a general track generally and drive the other way. If it's coming straight for your house, drive the other way. Oh, I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_00

So if you're in your house, actually get out of your house and drive away. Yeah, if the door That is ridiculous.

SPEAKER_01

Let me ask you this, Bridget. If I told you that a I don't know, semi-truck was driving towards your house, and if you stayed in the basement, you'd probably be okay. Or you could drive away and you would definitely be okay.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, you could drive away and you might get run over by the semi-truck.

SPEAKER_01

Unlikely.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Also unlikely that if I'm in my basement, I'm gonna die. My house will be ruined, but I will likely survive.

SPEAKER_01

Everything's gonna crash down on you. You'll be dead. No, I won't. Bridget, you'll have people like crushed on top of you. I can't with this. This is the panic attack.

SPEAKER_00

I just gotta tell you that Mike Mason and I agreed on this, and Nick.

SPEAKER_01

Drive away from the tornado. Can we talk about this beautiful cocktail I made?

SPEAKER_00

Okay, let's move on.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. So this is a cranberry orange gin fizz. It's a very Thanksgiving cocktail. You could actually put a little thyme in there as a garnish. Yeah, who doesn't mind? I didn't I thought I had time, but I didn't have it.

SPEAKER_00

I want time. Also, I just do need to note before I drink my cocktail, if you're watching on YouTube, I wash my hands 27 times a day. But yes, I did a craft project with my child this morning for his homework for 4K, and the marker won't come off. So I'm sorry. Don't judge me.

SPEAKER_01

So this is four parts cranberry juice, two parts gin, one part triple sec, one part orange juice, and then uh topped with some cranberry sprite.

SPEAKER_00

That is delicious. Isn't it like a fun little that is so good? And I gotta have to tell you, I don't know why I thought it would be bright red, but I also thought the cranberry sprite would be red. So I don't know why.

SPEAKER_01

You could put some frozen cranberries in here for extra garnish too if you wanted.

SPEAKER_00

I love this. Oh my gosh. Nick made this one for me, so thanks, buddy. You're welcome.

SPEAKER_01

I'm a gin fan. It's a great, great Thanksgiving drink because it's still light, you know.

SPEAKER_00

It's it's a great like appetizer cocktail.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's got the fall flavor still, that orange cranberry thing that's just screams things.

SPEAKER_00

It's still a little sizable.

SPEAKER_01

It's not that much. It's a lot of it's only it's a lot of juice, you're right. Yeah, it's only about I don't want to know. I don't often drink half of it is is alcoholic part. Oh, just half? Less than half of it, and that does include the wash. So it's maybe like a quarter.

SPEAKER_00

We're doing fine then. We're doing great. It's really great. I love this one, might be one of my favorites. It's really great. It reminds me of the one you made in the summer. Oh, yeah. I mean, I don't know what was in it, but it was gin and some kind of juice. Gin and juice.

SPEAKER_01

Gin and juice.

SPEAKER_00

Anyway, very good. Great job, wonderful. Thanks.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I'm in next week's podcast outline, so I saw a uh a thing on Facebook that somebody said, My hunting my my husband calls it hunting season, but I call it put cranberries in every recipe season.

SPEAKER_00

I like um I was never the hunter's wife. We never Tyler did that in a previous life, um, but never mind. And then he met Bridget and no more, buddy. I mean, go ahead, but like he used to do it with his dad, and his dad's not around. So yeah, I don't, I don't know. I'm sorry, Tyler, if you want to go hunting, but my poor sister has four, maybe five days on her own while her husband is hunting and she has two kids and bless you. So anyway, thanks, Tyler, for sticking around. I'm not about to try and skip Thanksgiving, but I do need to acknowledge our Thanksgiving cocktail. I know we're going out of order, but I have to acknowledge something that I think is the best time of year when all of the holiday commercials come out. So I was an advertising major in college, advertising in PR, and I love commercials. Like I know people, Tyler gets irrationally mad when like Hulu has commercials. I love them. I like I enjoy commercials. I like good commercials. So, like, you know, Super Bowl, holiday time, all those things. So I have written down my three holiday ones that are notable. And if you haven't seen them, pull them up on YouTube because most people don't watch TV that has commercials now. So I don't know. I've seen them on social media or something. But the first one I actually saw was from Walmart. So I think we've talked about Walmart before and how they're totally picking up their game here.

SPEAKER_01

Are the clues.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, they've definitely dumped a lot of money into their marketing, their fashion side of things. So love them or hate them, they have a really great um commercial called America's Cart Anthem. So it's all about like, you know, obviously 2020 commercials are kind of following a general theme of traditional holidays, like what matters, and this is no different. So it's like, hey, you know, this holiday is different, but maybe we should all just be grateful for what matters. So that's the gist of it. But like it ends with like a baby putting an ornament on a Christmas tree. And you have no soul if you don't like that commercial. But even better, and I actually cried at this one was Amazon. Have you seen this? Um, the show must go on.

SPEAKER_01

The ballerina I cry every time I hear that though, because of Freddie Mercury. Okay, well, then don't watch this. Um pour one out for him right now.

SPEAKER_00

Pour one out right here on top of all of our electronic equipment.

SPEAKER_01

Um Freddie, we still love you.

SPEAKER_00

This one is awesome, and it is about a um ballerina who got you know to be it's meant to be Swan Lake, I think. But anyway, she got to be um the lead in the show, and she obviously was working, working, working, and then she found out that everything is canceled in 2020. So she lives uh whatever, long story short, she put on, she ended up um her younger sister saw how sad she was and then invited the whole like apartment complex to watch her out their windows, and she performed the ballet on the rooftop of a anyway, whatever. It's really lovely. You have to watch it. And then I should have started with the downer first, the Macy's one. Have you seen this Macy's one about the shoes, the dad shoes? No, okay, actually.

SPEAKER_01

Man, been watching a lot of television. It's an international break for soccer.

SPEAKER_00

But it's it's on like Facebook, all these ads. Are they? Yes, that's where I've been.

SPEAKER_01

I've been on Facebook a lot. I've only been on it for work. Like I literally have just done the like business manager side of Facebook, so I don't have to see all the other crap. That's a good idea. Because I recently got into um I recently felt emboldened to tell people who who won the election and that I don't want to hear your crackpot. Joe Biden is sitting in his basement printing off ballots thing. Um did you use the crackpot? Yes, I did. So I hope I took you seriously. Um so I decided I'm just not I think telling the truth is important. I think somebody needs to stand up to these bullies. Um, but I decided I'm gonna stop.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. I'll move on from Christmas ads. We'll move on from politics. I'm feeling festive, so check out some holiday ads, cry a little.

SPEAKER_01

So one other thing you can see is remember Bridget had the vote necklace, which was very important. Some might say the most important thing. Now her necklace says Bridget.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it did. I knew you were gonna judge me about this today, okay? We went from vote to Bridget. I wanted to wear my vote necklace again, and I was like, ah, I have a really cute one, just like the vote one with my kids' initials on it, and it went missing.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe you now it's Bridget. Maybe you should have uh put one that said four last week. Vote four. That's right. And then really observant watchers would see the subliminal message. People, the joke I love getting. This is the 2024 announcement.

SPEAKER_00

This is Bridget Leach. Um, people are like, uh, did you forget your name? Do you have to keep it on your necklace? That's my favorite joke when I wear this necklace.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think that's funny.

SPEAKER_00

It's like, no, it's not funny. So anyway, I like it. It was a gift. It reminds me of Sex in the City. Yeah, it's a cool joke. Sherry Bradshaw's like my fashion icon. Love her. Okay, we're moving on. We're drinking already and we're still babbling, so thanks for hanging with us. Um, food. Okay, food. This is a tough one because we did a video shoot, and I know that's the best thing we all ate this week, but why don't you tell me about yours first?

SPEAKER_01

So I am gonna just do so. We did our our video shoot for holidays, um, updating some of the like very popular holiday recipes that how to make a rib roast, how to do a whole tenderloin, how to cook tenderloin filets, sous-vie, a really great pork coin recipe. And uh we wanted to update the videos because they're really popular. And with the arms race in video technology now, like we had something in 1080. And guess what? People want to watch 4K now. Okay, people. So uh we redid it uh a little bit higher quality, uh lighting. Yep, a little bit more focus on making sure you're cooking to temperature, not time. Um, it was a lot of it was a lot of work. Uh always is. It was a long day. Uh although this time I had ergonomic mats.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he had a dad mat, we're gonna call it.

SPEAKER_01

So that was that was very helpful. But Squishy mats for your kitchen, if you're wondering what he means. We did some roasted whole tenderloin and sliced it up and had it on some salted rye rolls with some lemon chive butter from banner butter. Oh, and just like that little I put a little bit of mustard on it, that small little silver dollar type sandwich thing, and just like the cold tenderloin, and oh, it was so good. I just I love it so much. It's simple, it's but really all the ingredients shine. And I know it's a little bit of a cop-out because it's oh mine's a real cop-out then. Like, oh yeah, I you know had this $30 a pound cut of meat and it was really good. Weird it was delicious. I mean, it was delicious. I love it. I just I love it.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, the pork then, not $30 a pound, and that was so good. That was also weird. We ate it, I think, for two days. My kids love it, everyone loved it.

SPEAKER_01

Elliot had to be all over them.

SPEAKER_00

Um, Elliot and Lou, I mean both of them, honestly, and Tyler. We all loved it. But so the pork was great. I knew Nick would pick from this video, so I chose something else from that day. I ran out to get rolls for us to enjoy the tenderloin on, and I was like, man.

SPEAKER_01

The female in the group said, Hey guys, we're not gonna eat just meat. How about I get some carbs and vegetables too?

SPEAKER_00

But I was like, if I'm just eating meat at noon, I'm gonna fall asleep. Like carbs and meat, I'm gonna fall asleep by two o'clock.

SPEAKER_01

This is why like everybody's opinions are important. Yes, that's that's right.

SPEAKER_00

The female in the group. So I got mixed veggies from Simple, and I didn't know you could do this, but I think every day I'm going to order veggies, mixed veggies for four people, which is what I did. And I ate them again the next day. No, for dinner that night, I ate them again. And I just mixed them with some tortellini that we already had made because I like, I don't know, I had no time by the time my kids got in whatever. So I just re-put some veggies and tortellini in a pan and made a brown butter sauce. Oh, heck yeah. Yeah, and it was so good. So go girl. That's all man. I ate simple veggies all day and it was the best. I I just want to eat those side of veggies all every day. So thank you. I like that.

SPEAKER_01

Pro tip right there.

SPEAKER_00

Pro tip right there. Get a side of veggies, eat it all day.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. That's food. Bridget, what's going on in the news? I'm interested. Yeah. We got a couple things here.

SPEAKER_00

I had like 12, but I edited it down.

SPEAKER_01

I like the one about the parks. That seems really awesome.

SPEAKER_00

So we'll just, yeah, we'll just mention this one quick. Um, you know, we celebrated Veterans Day this past week, so just wanted to make a quick note that um uh vets and gold star families were granted lifetime access to national parks. So they were given lifetime passes, as they should, very well deserved. So just shout out to the national parks. We've talked about them on here.

SPEAKER_01

There's a lot of people in the coronavirus times that have government resources and access. And one of the things for me that was so hard about coronavirus is we have to keep evolving while making money. Like we weren't able to close for a single day. We had, you know, um, there's like governmental agencies that were able to close for a while and other quasi-governmental things they're able to close and figure stuff out and also not worry about money because guess what? They didn't get to break on our taxes. Um so the national parks, though, are like a government agency that kept open, kept going.

SPEAKER_00

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

Obviously super important during and like rolled with it, offered more services, figured it out. Yep. Um, they were like, why we should pay taxes? Like, hey, we gave you guys this stuff and you've worked hard for us. So shout out to the national parks, they're doing awesome.

SPEAKER_00

I just quick saw that one, and uh obviously we've talked about that with my sister on here before with Britney, and so we just wanted to mention that. Um, but another one, another story for you that what has made me cry time and time again. So, you know, I've clicked on it once, I see it now 27 times. Um, if you've ever been, and I'm sure this is true with many sporting events, but I found it um I've been an athlete my whole life. I found it's particularly true with marathons and half marathons. Um, I've never run a full marathon, but I've run a whole bunch of half. And they're like, it's just the most supportive group of people. Whether you run a seven-minute mile or a 12-minute mile, it doesn't matter. You finish the race, like you've worked your butt off to do this. So I always get really emotional at races. Like I watch the Boston Marathon on TV. I watch the New York Marathon. Whatever, it's a weird thing. But um, I'm sure you've seen somewhere around the news. But the first person with Down syndrome completed an Iron Man. That's awesome. Yes, that is amazing. I I don't think I could complete an Iron Man if you paid me a million dollars. I mean, maybe, but that's insane.

SPEAKER_01

A million dollars is a lot of money.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, I'd try, I guess. So Chris Nickik, huge, huge props. Um, I, you know, of course, now follow him on all the channels everywhere because it's inspirational and awesome and amazing. And I cannot even tell you again how many times I've cried watching all these things because people are just so excited for him. He um, I think it was his marathon time was just over six hours, like I want to say six eighteen. So anyway, I can't, I just think it's so great. I know a lot of you, you know, my friends and family that are listening, a good chunk of you have run races before, um distance races. And uh, we've talked about this, I think, before how like encouraging and amazing that that group of people is. Um, so anyway, now that I am lazy and don't run half-marathons, I like to volunteer with them because it's still I like to support the people that have worked their butts off to try and do that. So congratulations to Chris Nickick.

SPEAKER_01

Nice. Yeah, it's great. Uh my story is about some things I love football, American football, and data analytics. American football. I love statistics and data analytics. I hated in school, but like I always liked the sports applications of statistics. You know, I like kept all I went through the box scores of the sports section of the paper. You know, when I was a kid. Uh so I always I think analytics are really interesting. And I think like the saber metric movement and baseball is super interesting. Um, but football has been a sport that's been really more difficult to bring analytics to because of the very unpredictable nature of it. Baseball, there's like finite sets of outcomes and very clear data points. Okay. Football, like, so this guy ran a route like how do you how do you use analytics? How do you process data? Um, and they're tracking people's movements and stuff to start figuring out. But um it also talks about how I think it's insane what we do with children's sports these days. Like, absolutely freaking insane.

SPEAKER_00

So I think you and I differ on this a little.

SPEAKER_01

How so like when I played football in high school, we had like a crappy handheld cancorder up in the stands videotaping the thing, and we would watch it back.

SPEAKER_00

That's true. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Now they have like a four-person video team of you know, people that like football and like video and are here to support the team, and thousands of dollars of gear because they have an overhead, you know, thing that's a 50-foot pole on each end zone, and then they have two angles. It's high school. Like, why you know I I hate to be I'm not the guy that's like, oh, brother James should make $50 million a year. But why are we spending tens of thousands of dollars on high school football teams when like none of these kids are gonna play professionally? None. Yeah. And like there's hungry people, or there's like we're not funding math tutors for kids, or we're not funding, you know, ESL. Like, why are we spending this money on so I think it's ridiculous how serious it's gotten. I think it should still be mostly an emphasis on fun and developing skills, and I know we all like winning. I really particularly like winning, but the amount that people are spending time, effort, emotional thing on winning high school sports, I think is just crazy. It should be about work ethic, life skills, fun. That said. Like processing so many things, I have to say. So George Mahoney in Middletown, New Jersey is in his day job. What is his technical term or something? An efficiency expert. That's his job? Yep. He's bringing statistics to his helpful volunteer high school football team and tracking things and coming up with, you know, like these ideas of uh, you know, what a fumble's worth, and really saying uh, you know, one of the things he's talking about here is uh 72% of punts aren't are either fair caught or not caught not or fumbled or not returned at all. Really? So why even put someone back to return it? Because the efficiency gain you get by sending 11 to block it versus having someone back 72%?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I that seems ridiculous. Although this is way too much for me. Like I'd rather watch a video and rip it apart.

SPEAKER_01

So I thought it was very interesting. If you like stats, if you like nerd stuff, um it's a really great article in the New York Times. We have the link in the show notes. I just I thought it was a really interesting thing on the trends. You like one of the things um like scrolling through it that I thought was really interesting. Uh, because obviously with the changes in coronavirus, he he found out that this year uh football stadiums were a lot hotter, hotter, and that was affecting performance. And it was because there was no fans in the stadium.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I was like, what do you mean? Jesus. No fans to cool it down. With that, we're taking a break, guys. Okay, ready? Ah, we're back. It's a refreshing drink. Drinking his cocktails. So we are here with Product Rex. And if you've been listening along, we now in the holiday season are turning our product recommendations into a gift guide. So they are m mostly, if not all, things that you can and should buy for people on your gift list.

SPEAKER_01

Check out Poshmark. Dude, seriously. Maybe we should have Mike record a Poshmark segment.

SPEAKER_00

Mike is not feeling hot on Poshmark right now, but I am changing his mind. Okay. I love Poshmark. So that is not my recommendation today, but my product recommendation is one that I have been gifted two, if not three times, and I am buying already for someone, at least one person on my list, uh maybe more. So this is a return address stamp. Um, you may think that this is boring, uh, but it's so useful. So if you ever send cards, anything like this, I got my very first one um when my husband and I were engaged and we were sending out save the dates. So instead of stickers, it's just a nice self-inking stamp. Um, you can do all kinds of, I mean, there's a million places on Etsy to do it. The place I am recommending is right here in Burlington. So it's not far. Um, the woman actually started in Lake Geneva initially, and now she has a place in Burlington. It's called Best Stamps Four, the number four, and then you, the letter U. So we will post this in the show notes. But um, we have gotten multiple stamps from her. I've loved them. Um, and I'm getting one. My mother-in-law is really good. I hope she's not listening. She's very good at sending cards for everything to the kids. She sends each kid a Halloween card, a Valentine's card, all the things because they love getting mail. So, but she's always handwriting her um return address. So I'm getting one for her this year. I'm telling you it now. So if you want to get one for your Christmas cards for yourself, treat yourself. Or you can like get one for St. Nick's Day and leave it for someone, and then you can use it for all of your Christmas cards. So, best stamps for you or anywhere on Etsy, have a local person do it, a small shop do it, instead of getting it on Amazon. They have some really, really cool designs, and you will use it way more than you think.

SPEAKER_01

It's very nice. It's great. I'm looking at it. She's got a lot of I like it. It's great.

SPEAKER_00

It's like a silly website, but like this is not what she's about. It's not about her website. But I promise you, like, like I said, I have two or three stamps from her, and they're great. They're great quality. So my Ooh, and quick turnaround. Okay, that's all.

SPEAKER_01

My recommendation. Uh, you remember we did our spring candle smell off with the candle marking pile? Yes. Um, they have rolled out all of their Christmas holidays. Yes, they're so good. And they are so good. They have scents such as candy cane, gingerbread, white Christmas, juniper, Santa's pipe, Christmas tree, mistletoe, frankincense, myrrh, and peppermint bark.

SPEAKER_00

Their white Christmas one, if I remember correctly, from last year, is so good.

SPEAKER_01

The white Christmas one's really good. Yeah. So uh, if you love candles like I do, uh they ship. They have the retail store. You can pop in, get some, support a small local business instead of large behemoth.

SPEAKER_00

And they have little gift packs of four mini candles.

SPEAKER_01

So it's a great gifting idea, it's a great treat show self idea. Local shop. They're nice people. Uh they do a lot to support the community and the kisses from Keegan Cancers Um Society, so that's really cool. So, yeah, go. Uh, my recommendation the Christmas scented candles from Candle Mercandile. Check them out.

SPEAKER_00

Great idea, Nick. And we're gonna take a quick break. We'll be right back with the fantasy update.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, we're back. Nick's being picky. Well, Bridget did something really loud into the microphone. But I didn't want to.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, sorry. I moved my microphone, everybody.

SPEAKER_01

I'm here. I'm a human listener. I make errors. It's okay, Bridget. I just didn't want to subject the listeners to, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Nick's here for you guys.

SPEAKER_01

All right, so it's time for a fantasy update.

SPEAKER_00

That is good, good. You guys, I'm here to report very exciting things. Can you start with a quote, please? I have a story with aggressively because I could just it says, because it's not worth winning if you can't win big.

SPEAKER_01

Boom!

SPEAKER_00

So I won big this past week.

SPEAKER_01

I believe you beat your husband, yes.

SPEAKER_00

No, this was Bennett. Oh, you beat Bennett. Yeah. So I'm back on top. Um, I won 124.5 to 94.2. So the quote, so like when you open the ESPN app, which is what we use for our fantasy. That's like a 33% beatdown. It's a it's not worth winning if you can't win big. So like it you open it if you win, it like has confetti and it has a little quote, which I've never paid attention to, but I paid attention this week, and that was the quote. And I was like, yes, I need to. Suck on that one, Ben. Need to tell my podcast listeners. Um, shout out to Bennett, he just got a really awesome job, also. So congrats on that. Congrats, Bennett. Okay, anyway, guys, fantasy update, all good news. We are moving on to interesting.

SPEAKER_01

Well, what's it looking like this week?

SPEAKER_00

No, man. I don't know. I haven't looked. I'm busy this week. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I haven't looked. What's it looking like? Who are you playing?

SPEAKER_01

Are you gonna be in the playoffs?

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. I hate when it turns into playoffs. I gotta be honest. I kind of lose it. See? The confetti? Wow. Because it's not if you can, I don't doubt you can see that. But don't worry, I screenshot it every week. So um, this week I'm playing Spencer. Um, it's not looking good for me. Not looking good, but honestly, I haven't updated my team at all, so thanks for the reminder. I will do that after the podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Let's see if Spencer gets the beat down too. All right.

SPEAKER_00

I doubt it. He's very good.

SPEAKER_01

Now it is time for interesting questions with Bridget and Nick. Bridget.

SPEAKER_00

It's Thanksgiving week. I mean, it's not actually, but for interesting questions, I'm asking Nick some Thanksgiving questions. Love it. Okay, are we? I think next week we probably should do more Thanksgiving questions. Yeah. Anyway, this is disgusting, and I don't know how I'd answer this one. Would you rather eat an entire pumpkin pie?

SPEAKER_01

Or drink the whole gravy boat? Oh, drink the whole gravy boat. Drink the whole gravy boat. Pumpkin pie is gross, disgusting, terrible. It's it's the worst. I hate it so much. Okay. Anything pumpkin, I hate it all. Yeah, I mean I'm not actually a huge pumpkin. I hate it all. Um, gravy's delicious. And um, you know, I I make a great gravy myself. You do. And basically, I I'll drink the whole gravy boat, and then I'll eat the whole pot of mashed potatoes. Well, it'll all stuff out. It'll stuff all over the table. It'll be fine, but I didn't have to eat the gross ass pumpkin pie.

SPEAKER_00

Whoa. Okay, so that was easy then? That was easy. I do have a um question. Simple pumpkin pancakes. Have you ever had them?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't like them.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, so I like them as far as pumpkin things go, but yeah, I wouldn't choose them. Okay, great. Um What are you doing? I'm doing neither.

SPEAKER_01

I'm extaining.

SPEAKER_00

There, I'm I'm not eating. Uh yeah, I'm not answering this. I Thanksgiving flavors actually are not my favorite thing. Like there are What about cranberry orange? I mean, cranberry, so there are things on um Thanksgiving. Like I love dessert, but there are Thanksgivings that I don't eat dessert.

SPEAKER_01

Cranberry orange rubbed spatchcock chicken.

SPEAKER_00

Whoa. Can you explain what spatchcocking is real fast?

SPEAKER_01

So you take the cut off the the backbone and lay it flat. So what we could do is we could do um like an orange marmalade and some cranberry sauce and some butter, make it into a compound butter, rub the chicken with that butter, roast it that way, and then uh a little bit like kind of uh dried herbs on top to bring out that uh Maybe Nick's gonna make a new recipe for you guys really soon. Just some inspiration there. Okay. It's chicken, it's cranberry, it's orange. What cannot be liked by Bridget in that one?

SPEAKER_00

Chicken cranberry. I do love cranberry and orange together. So like I'll just eat the cranberry sauce. Shannon makes a really good cranberry orange sauce thing. Um, okay. I had to I had to do one on the fly here because I gotta save one for next week. Um, would you rather take a bath in cranberry sauce or go swimming in a pool of apple cider?

SPEAKER_01

Alcoholic or otherwise?

SPEAKER_00

Uh, whatever you want, Nick. This is in your dreams. Yeah. I think do you want me to answer while you're thinking?

SPEAKER_01

Apple cider looks too much like another liquid that you could possibly swim in. So I would be uncertain if it was pea or apple cider. Uh and if it's alcoholic apple cider, I would get way too drunk and drown. So I'm gonna go with the cranberry sauce because cranberry sauce is delicious. And you know, like I think it'd feel really good to like rub it on yourself and like uh and like uh it could be jellied. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

If it's like whole cranberry, it'd be exfoliating. And it's like massage beans. Where you could be like, so we're gonna be over there bathing in cranberry sauce. Oh, that sounds great to me. That was my um the apple cider one, yeah. I think it's the color. Yeah, isn't that one fun? And I could answer it. That's the best part. Yes. Okay, so this one is just nice and heartfelt. Would you rather say 50 things you're thankful for or listen to someone else say 50 things they're thankful for? I knew you'd hate this because, like, uh, why would I say things we're thankful for? Well, buddy, focus on the gratitude.

SPEAKER_01

I love it. I love it. Can we all go around the table and say, I'm thankful this is almost over? I want to do that. Who doesn't do that?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, you're the worst. So answer the dang question. Um I couldn't come up with 50 things I'm thankful for. Is that what you want to say?

SPEAKER_01

No, I'd rather say the 50 things because I'll come up with good stuff and somebody else probably will come up with bad stuff. Well, I'm thankful that the dinosaurs are dead because I don't want to get eaten by a velociraptor. Oh, great, Jimmy. That's creative, Jimmy.

SPEAKER_00

I do get really annoyed when it's like, I'm thankful for this food. Like, we know that. But perhaps you could say, like, I am grateful that Nick cooked this meal so I didn't have to.

SPEAKER_01

You know, that's a different way to say the same thing, but you're actually I would like to hear 50 things Elliot's grateful for because they would be hilarious.

SPEAKER_00

I'm grateful for the color red, orange, and brown. I'm grateful for he would say mom. I mean, especially right now. He would say mom.

SPEAKER_01

He loves mom.

SPEAKER_00

He probably would say Lucy and also dad. Um, he would list every family member, so you know.

SPEAKER_01

It'd be a quick one.

SPEAKER_00

Anyway, we've got more. I'm gonna ask Nick one next week, regardless, even though it's his week, because I've been waiting for it. We'll have some good ones. So stay tuned, guys.

SPEAKER_01

Stay tuned.

SPEAKER_00

Whoa, we're gonna sing it.

SPEAKER_01

All right, it's time for meal plan talk and uh another stellar meal plan. I was looking at some good ones on this. There's some hardy ones.

SPEAKER_00

It's clearly like I'm hunkering down in the cold weather because these are like hardy meals. Brigid is nesting. I'm wearing, you know, spandex overalls right now. They're really comfy. Um, okay, so yeah, I chose another Sunday recipe, which I believe I chose last week as well. These are roast beef cheddar pockets. So again, I put two things on our Sunday recipe that are great for football season because you know I love my football. So this is like, I love, I love little pockets of things, especially if I made them and I know what's in them, so there's no surprises. Um, so yeah, like you know, pizza pockets, for example. But this is roast beef. So um it's from beef. It's what's for dinner. And it's just a good by Sunday. Like if you haven't eaten your leftovers from the week, this is a good way to use some leftover meat. Um, throw some cheese in there, whatever you want. I mean, you can put all kinds of things inside these delicious pockets. Um, but it's great for like a little snack or a casual dinner or something the kids can help you make. So I'm all about meals that are little pockets of food. So that's where I'm going this week.

SPEAKER_01

Uh mine is a Nick original. Oh, an OG. It's uh OG from Nick. Uh you take a top pot, we call it bourbon glaze steak bites. So you take um like a top pot steak, top sirloin, if you will, cut it up into little pieces, top it in this like whiskey susure, soy sauce, honey thing. That's like you get the sweet and sticky, and then just fry it to shit. Yum. And so they're these like really sticky, yummy bits of steak that you can have with rice. Like you could roll them in rice if you really wanted for you know, like a modern day sushi. Yep. Uh but they're just like sticky and sweet and tangy and delicious. Yeah, they look good. Um so easy to make. Um they're really good. I'm just gonna leave it at that. They are really good. Sticky and fried. They're like it's like beefy goodness. And like, because you know, you cook it on really high heat until the it's glazed. So the middle's, you know, a little bit less done. Oh. So you get the like yeah, it's kind of like a gusher, you know.

SPEAKER_00

A meat gusher, everybody.

SPEAKER_01

Not not gross like that. Just like you get to that middle and you get like a mmm, beefy.

SPEAKER_00

Delectable. So good. That is the worst comparison I've ever heard. Really? Best.

SPEAKER_01

I'm not sure. Like I know exactly what you mean. You just get to the middle and it's like, but a meat gusher. Or like a you know, jelly-filled donut.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, I follow.

SPEAKER_01

Jelly-filled donuts are the devil.

SPEAKER_00

I agree, actually. I hate being tricked into buying, yes.

SPEAKER_01

All these I think there should be a law that if you have jelly-filled donuts anywhere near the regular donuts, you're an asshole. Also, what about cream-filled?

SPEAKER_00

Also, gross. I mean, gross, but not as bad as jelly. I accidentally bought one at Quick Trip the other day. I was really sad.

SPEAKER_01

I really don't like it when you take that nice big bite into donut, and you know what happens? The cream goes all over your face. Well, guys. I didn't even have the decency to warn you.

SPEAKER_00

Except that it's right on the label that none of us read. No, it's on the label right below it.

SPEAKER_01

They oftentimes do a very poor job of that.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, well, mine was dark mine was on the label.

SPEAKER_01

There's actually a local grocery store whose donuts I prefer that is terrible at that.

SPEAKER_00

Really? I know who you're talking about, but I've never had that. Well, not never. Just like that.

SPEAKER_01

That's why I stick with cake donuts.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, chocolate cake donuts. All right. Oh, it's time, guys. For Kid Corner. So earlier we talked about this little tornado we had. It was not a tornado, it was just a, you know, a little storm. Okay, I think there was a tornado, but we'll follow up on that. So, um also, it was more than a little storm. It was the first time in a while I felt like I have a Jeep, like it's a heavy SUV, and I thought I would blow off the road. But anyway, um, I just want to talk about how children, specifically Elliot, have a whole different way of seeing the world and reminding us to like calm the F down. So Elliot was this was right as he would be getting from his school back to his daycare, and then um he comes home from there. And that was right when this was all happening. So um, between the 415, 4:30 hour. And so this is not the first time um he's had to go in the basement at daycare. So all of the kids and my darling husband who runs the daycare, they all had to go down into the basement, um, you know, for safety because the sirens were blaring. Like that is the thing you were supposed to do. And um, so so I'm just like feeling so sad. And I'm like, Elliot, Lucy, honestly, I doubt, would be scared. She has no idea what's going on. But Elliot, very sensitive, I'm like, he's gonna be so scared. So we got home and I was asking him about it, and he reminded me, he's like, Mom, it was just a little storm. I'm like, okay, kid, like that's great. I'm projecting my giant fear of tornadoes onto you, and you don't care at all. So he thought it was great. They had a lot of fun in the basement, they sang some songs, and he just thought it was a little storm. So just reminding you that kids don't have the same irrational fears as you. So that's all.

SPEAKER_01

That's a nice story. It was nice, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe he'd go for a drive through the tornado with Yeah, maybe he can jump out of his house, run to Nick's, and drive away from the tornado next time. Let's do it, Elliot. I was in the basement with my sister and her infant.

SPEAKER_01

He can sit in the front seat, right?

SPEAKER_00

Not legally, I don't think. I don't know. This is a debate, a contested debate. We'll see.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Uh mine is about my dear darling Simona, aka my only child. Uh she uh has become kind of a little bit of a daddy's girl this last 10 days or so.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Uh and she really just when she gets home, especially after daycare, she wants me to hold her. That's all she wants. She's like kind of like not really. I think she's tired from a long day. You know, she's growing all them teeth. She's got like five coming in now through the top. Oh, never stops. I got the like look from, you know, like it's like, oh, you have a lot of teeth coming in. And I think that's exhausting. It's a lot of energy, a lot of you know, pain. Yeah. And uh, so I think she's kind of done, you know. Daycare wears her out. Big day, just wants to be held. So uh she's a big girl in her room, you know, so got a lot of responsibility. Come home after a hard day of boss and daycare, and uh, you know, dad hold me. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So constantly.

SPEAKER_01

Constant. So we do all of our cooking together. And so I do my cooking one-handed now. Oh my god. And we try to uh I try to talk her through everything. I think she's listening because she definitely like, you know, she looks she's like a sponge, man. Yeah, I say Simona, okay. So the first thing we're gonna do is we're gonna heat this. You know, you never want to put meat in a cold pan unless there's some certain circumstances, but generally the rule is don't put meat in a cold pan. So we're gonna heat this up, oil in. We're gonna use vegetable oil for this because it's gonna be a hot temperature. I explained smoke points to her and she kind of looks like she's interested.

SPEAKER_00

She's definitely remembering that at age one.

SPEAKER_01

But she's, you know, she's looking, she seems interested. I enjoy it, and then I'm like, okay, Simona, I'm gonna need to like put you down because I needed like hot schemal meat. And she loses her cool. Yeah. So then, you know, I quickly pick her back up and she looks, looks, and then I, you know, it might be she just wants her food. She's associated with when I get this process done, I get my food. So could you please hurry up? Hurry the F. But I really enjoy it. I really enjoy uh that she likes to be held by me now.

SPEAKER_00

And I think she like babbling, like does she do dot yet?

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah. Oh, okay. I was like, that's the best. But she's silent while we're watching the cooking. She just, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Because she's listening to smoke points of oil.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, she's she's locked in.

SPEAKER_00

That's great. It is fun. I mean, whatever. That'll continue. It's fun being in the kitchen with kids, even though I don't like being in the kitchen. I bake a lot with Elliot because I can't screw up that.

SPEAKER_01

Well, where do you do the baking?

SPEAKER_00

In my kitchen. This is what I'm saying next. Okay. Good God. Okay, guys. Thanks for listening to us ramble this week.

SPEAKER_01

That's a good one, I thought. I'm really excited about the holidays if you can't tell. It's gonna be great. I'm very excited for Thanksgiving. I think we're getting our plans figured out early this year.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I mean, it's not early, it's like in a week and a half. I know.

SPEAKER_01

Two weeks? I don't even know what day it is.

SPEAKER_00

We usually figure it out on Tuesday. So Oh my god, that stresses me out. Stresses me out. Are you guys decorating yet? Let us know. Because I want to know. Yeah, I gotta get my lights up. This is the hot debate. I am hitting up my Christmas tree on small business Saturday because there's a really cool local place doing something fun, which we'll talk about next week. So all right, guys, thanks so much. Make sure to find us on Facebook and Instagram and see our beautiful faces on YouTube at Dinner Plus Drinks Podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Uh as always, if you can subscribe, we appreciate it. Leave us a review, share with your friends, tell them that Bridget and Nick are too well and crazy. We're swell. Um we'd really appreciate everybody that shares. It means a lot to us, helps us grow. Um we have a growth goal that we'd like to hit by the end of the year. So if you could help us with that, we really appreciate it. Um we like talking to people. Good time.
