Crayola Saves the World | Dinner Plus Drinks #23
There have been some pretty exciting developments in the world this week, chief among them, Crayola is now offering a Colors of the World crayon pack that lets kids everywhere have exactly the right skin tone color for who they want to draw. We talk Crayola, space launches, and so much more on this episode.
We recorded this episode on video, so if you'd like to watch us as we talk with you, check out our YouTube page.
Here's what we talked about on this week's episode:
- We discovered what exactly a slushie beer is by enjoying Son of Shakey, a Vanilla Milkshake IPA from Maplewood Brewing. Have you tried a slushie beer? We have a limited amount available at LGCM right now!
- Nick fully supports John Krasinski selling "Some Good News" to keep the series going. How do you feel about this feel good project continuing?
- Bridget is a big fan of these Zen Pig books to help fill your child's day with gratitude. Do you have any tips on how to teach children gratitude? (Nick note - Elliot is a very grateful child, and Bridget is a wonderful parent.)
- Nick is going to keep sharing products he is buying while he's setting up his house. This week he FINALLY got TV's up, and is cutting the cord. To facilitate this, he has a Roku Streaming Stick+ (or two) and it works great with all the various services. Bridget also heartily endorses this product, so get yours right here.
- Bridget is going to be making this Easy Beef Stir Fry recipe at home this week.
- And Nick cannot tell you how much he loves this Pork Carnitas Made in Lard recipe. They're by far the most superior taco you'll ever eat.

Welcome everybody. Newest episode of Dinner Plus Drinks, and we are starting to move into the new office situation. What do you think? Uh we're gonna record the lighting's not quite great.
SPEAKER_01I think it's lovely.
SPEAKER_00Uh if you're listening to this, you can also tune into our YouTube channel to see it. And if you're watching on YouTube, thank you very much for tuning in. And hello. We're gonna start cutting up the episodes a little bit and have the very popular what we're drinking today and kid corners. Because those are the best parts. Yep, as standalone things. I mean it's all good, but that's we get a lot of I don't know. We get a lot of comments on that. So I think we'll have those broken up a little bit. So tune in on YouTube, and uh we have the link to that in the show notes so you can you can watch it there.
SPEAKER_02But this week.
SPEAKER_00I know what you've been all over this week. Okay, but as we're recording this, we don't even know how it ended up.
SPEAKER_02I know, I know. We're gonna leave you hanging on that because I gotta get something off my chest. Nick doesn't know about it. I just I need to get this bad juju out of my system, and then I then I'm here for you, and I'm gonna be fun and spunky and wonderful, okay? Spunky, that's spunky. Uh name of my cat. That would be oh, R. I p. Um, okay. My week is all thrown off. Memorial Day, like my days are thrown off. Um, I have to be somewhere on Friday that is making me out of the office. So, like, no Monday, no Friday. I don't even know what's happening.
SPEAKER_00Are you gonna have a Saturday or a Sunday?
SPEAKER_02I don't know, man. I gotta have a birthday party for my kids.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02So there's just that. And then, you know, the world. So I'm just gonna shout out to anyone else that might be feeling this way because it cannot just be me. There's like this decision fatigue, is how I read it somewhere. And like people trying to make the right decision of like, what do you do? Do you open your circle? Do you get on a freaking plane? No. The you know, all of that has been really hard for me. So I'm just gonna like have a moment. We've talked about this being therapy before. So thank you. We're all done now, and we're gonna talk about the space launch.
SPEAKER_00Decision fatigue is a real thing. Yes. They talk about that with uh a lot of the tech guys that wear the same thing every day, like Zuckerberg wears the hoodie and the shirt jeans. That takes away decision fatigue because if you think about it, what's the first decision you make when you get up? What am I gonna wear?
SPEAKER_02Put on a zebra shirt.
SPEAKER_00And that's one decision out of your day. So if you know what you're gonna wear every day, that's funny. It helps you make better decisions throughout the day.
SPEAKER_02I wonder if that like I love choosing what to get dressed because I enjoy clothing.
SPEAKER_00It's your best decision of the day.
SPEAKER_02So then it's just downhill from there. Yep. I mean, you look fabulous. Good work. Oh yeah, thank you. Yes, today is a shining example. All days during coronavirus are shining examples.
SPEAKER_00Shining, shiny examples.
SPEAKER_02Um, but you guys, did you watch the space launch?
SPEAKER_00I watched you watching the space launch.
SPEAKER_02I couldn't, I couldn't not look at it. I don't know what it was. Like I had been hearing, obviously, that this was going to happen. And if you don't know, the ship, the best part of this, okay, there's a lot of wonderful things. It's historic, blah, blah, blah. But the ship is called Dragon, okay? Which made you and Tyler immediately more interested. Don't lie.
SPEAKER_00If only there were some dungeons, Tyler would be really interested.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah. So if you aren't following along, crawl right out of that rock you're under. Um, the mission got scrubbed due to weather. It was like just 10 or 20 minutes off, and then they would have been able to um launch. But tune in, guys. We are recording this, of course, um, prior to the weekend. And this weekend, Saturday, I believe it's 2.22 local time, is now when the launch is slated to happen.
SPEAKER_00What do you find so interesting about this?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. So I think when I was a kid, I used to really love space, like space is cool things. Um, but I never like wanted to be an astronaut or like say I was flying to space. So um I don't know why it caught my attention, but I could not look away. So I had like my computer here doing work, and then I had my phone with headphones right next to me, just like watching the most mundane, boring stuff, like watching the the astronauts like do their calm checks. So you get, I don't know, you get like an inside glimpse into this, the dragon.
SPEAKER_00I think it's really cool that both astronauts are married to astronauts.
SPEAKER_02I didn't actually know that. I know nothing really. Oh, that's cool. At least it helps because I did think about the families a lot. Like I think about military families, like I could never do that. Same here.
SPEAKER_00I Are you sure you couldn't deal with Tyler going to space for two weeks?
SPEAKER_02I can't deal with Tyler being a basketball coach for a couple months. So, no, I'm not cut out for space or military. But I will watch it all day. Uh, you can tune in a thousand places, but I watched it on NASA's uh Facebook. So it was great. I'm gonna do it again on Saturday in the middle of my day.
SPEAKER_00Go ahead to space. Okay, yeah. Now it's time to open something, and this is a surprise. Okay. We talked about it a little bit with our Facebook Live with Grant. Uh first of all, you need to choose a pint glass. Oh. Would you like to be? Oh, that was a loud noise. Would you like to be Chewbacca or BB8? Chewbacca. Classic. There you go.
SPEAKER_02Plus, it's more fun to make Chewbacca noises. And what do we have here? Oh, son of shaky vanilla milkshake IPA? You guys, this is vanilla milkshake. I'm knocking things over. IPA. This is a beautiful can again, because Maplewood to me makes the most beautiful cans. So. Ooh.
SPEAKER_00I am, I am questioning this. God. Supposed to taste like a vanilla milkshake. Okay. But it's a beer. But like hoppy? Yeah, a little hoppy. Not super hoppy.
SPEAKER_02Hoppy milkshake.
SPEAKER_00So it says on here it's ale brewed with vanilla and lactose.
SPEAKER_02It doesn't make it sound good.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's what makes it, you know, milkshaky is the lactose.
SPEAKER_02So, okay. Good luck. Cheers. Ooh. It does taste like a milkshake a little. Well, I enjoy this. It is an IPA, of course, which I, you know, now that I uh know Nick, that's all I drank apparently. Oh, I really like this.
SPEAKER_00See, would I steer you wrong? I mean, cherry thing on the back. It's almost like a vanilla milkshake with the whipped cream and then the cherry on top.
SPEAKER_02I want to say that it's creamy, but that makes it sound gross. Like if someone describes a beer to me as creamy, it's not not my jam normally, but it tastes like a delicious creamsicle, but not like not as creamy as a creamsicle. Does that make sense?
SPEAKER_00It makes a lot of sense.
SPEAKER_02Sometimes creamsicle flavored things are too creamy. Not this, guys.
SPEAKER_00So this is a slushy beer, baby.
SPEAKER_02Um, maplewood. Okay, so a friend of mine um that lives in Chicago texted me actually an image of a maplewood beer. She's like, I can't wait to find this beer. And I was I told her how much I loved Maplewood, and she was like, What? You have this in Wisconsin? We do.
SPEAKER_00I was like, actually, yes, we sure do. We have lots of things in Wisconsin.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so that was great. So shout out, Sam. Thanks for the uh reminder about how much I love Maplewood and thanks for the vanilla milkshake IPA.
SPEAKER_00Very limited edition, Indicion Limitada. Oh, it's it's very in, pick it up at Lake Shneavan Country Meets if you want some, or other fine retailers of fine.
SPEAKER_02I am on board with this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00I will say, have one. There is a lot of lactose in this beer.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. So you know what I'm saying? I'll just set this right here. Why? I'm not lactose intolerant.
SPEAKER_00It's a lot of lactose. So none for Tyler. Yes, it's a lot of lactose.
SPEAKER_01Excellent.
SPEAKER_00It's like sour beers. The first time I had a sour beer, I got a warning of you're gonna really like these, they're really delicious, but have one to start with. There's a lot of random things in there.
SPEAKER_02But why with sour beers?
SPEAKER_00I don't there's a lot of uh strains of bacteria that you're not really used to. It still makes you sick? Oh yeah, it'll clean you right out. It's like kombucha. You know, the boots can really do a number on you.
SPEAKER_02You guys, did you know we were gonna tell you all about this today on the podcast?
SPEAKER_00I'm just telling you. Have one. Start with one.
SPEAKER_02Okay, we'll have this one.
SPEAKER_00So I want to talk about something great that we ate this week.
SPEAKER_02Yes, and guys, it's gonna be spoiler alert, Nick and I ate the same great thing this week.
SPEAKER_00I love long weekends because it means it's time to cook. And since I have so much time to cook, I get to do barbecue. Barbecue the right way. And we fire up the big green egg. We did the whole Texas barbecue platter. I shout out to Simple. Thank you for the flowers. They did their little barbecue thing. And I was hoping desperately for the platter where you go and you say, you know, I want a powder this, pound of this, pound of this. And they had platters, but they weren't quite that way. Still delicious, just still delicious, but it wasn't, you know, like the OG experience. So I did The OG experience. If you saw the Lake Shabby Country's Instagram feed, you saw the table shot. That was great. We had to do a video because a picture couldn't capture all of it.
SPEAKER_02That's right. And yeah, that that really just showed the full breadth of it.
SPEAKER_00So we started with brisket, Texas style. Uh we talked about that a little bit last week, but just salt, pepper, 18-hour smoke on the big green egg with oak.
SPEAKER_02Yes, this is overnight, guys. He's cooking his meat overnight.
SPEAKER_00And then we had babyback ribs, dry rub and a little bit of sauce to finish it up. Then we had chicken thighs. Of course. Pulled uh and sauced for Bridget, but also children.
SPEAKER_01Bridget and children.
SPEAKER_00Also, they're very good. Also smoked on the big green egg. Then we had baked beans. We had fruit. Excellent contribution. Yep, there you go. We had a cornbread. Cornbread. Oh, so good. I love cornbread. We had what else did we have? White bread. White bread, pickles, onions. I uh thought I had some jalapeno sitting around. Uh because the pickled jalapeno goes really great with the brisket, too.
SPEAKER_02I feel like there was one other thing. I'd have to look at our Instagram. It was so good. I okay, also, best thing I ate this week, and also great the next day. Leftovers because we had it for lunch the next day.
SPEAKER_00We could have added some pulled pork if we wanted to. We could have added some sausage if we wanted to. But we had plenty of food.
SPEAKER_02I'm grateful for the chicken. And my kids, my kids who are four and one, like four-year-old, cool, but my one-year-old, like, will loves the brisket.
SPEAKER_00I was so proud of Lucy. I started almost crying. We just was wolfing down the brisket.
SPEAKER_02We also did the next day. Girl. Forget it, girl.
SPEAKER_00Killing it.
SPEAKER_02You eat that.
SPEAKER_00This is the Lucy edition of the podcast because this is, you know, releasing almost the day of her birthday. That's true. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Golden birthday, June 1st.
SPEAKER_00You did get a few suggestions about what you should do for her golden birthday.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, guys, on our Dinner Plus Drinks Facebook page, I did put just a lovely photo of Lucy and a uh question. We were looking for some great themes for a birthday party for a one-year-old golden. Okay, on and on. Obviously, the best theme is Golden Girls, which was my original idea. No one liked Golden Shower by R. Kelly.
SPEAKER_00Oddly. It's your one-year-old, so I wasn't gonna go there.
SPEAKER_02That's weird.
SPEAKER_00I mean, he's into you know, but he's into all those things.
SPEAKER_02Um, Goldfinger, no shout outs for that. But this odd guy named Nick suggested a space-themed birthday. Well, I think it'd be great.
SPEAKER_00So, you know, women in STEM is a thing, right? Yes. And why not inspire Lucy now to get into STEM by telling her, dream big, Lucy, for your golden birthday. It was when the thing went and we just did the whole thing.
SPEAKER_02Well, there's nothing golden about that, Nick.
SPEAKER_00The sun is golden.
SPEAKER_02I'm serious. They're not going to the sun. It's in outer space. Details.
SPEAKER_00There's gold spoil wrap around all of them because the gold is a great protector of what do you call that? Insulator from the sun.
SPEAKER_02I think it's silver, actually.
SPEAKER_00No, it's gold. Just looks silver? No, it's gold. I promise you, it's gold.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so that theme is like a little bit of a stretch. So I might.
SPEAKER_00I'm not gonna try it to inspire the young women of the world.
SPEAKER_02But I am all about STEM for the young ladies. Thanks.
SPEAKER_00But also, if you want to get in the arts, that's fine.
SPEAKER_02I mean, whatever.
SPEAKER_00Whatever.
SPEAKER_02We're not here to judge. Okay, guys. Moving right on. What random news stories did we, you know, find this week? A whole lot, actually.
SPEAKER_00A whole lot. You got I like your good one.
SPEAKER_02I do. So I always have a really hard time coming up with these because there's I like to ignore the bad things going on in the world, but this was a nice um meld here. So I want to just say, why can't we all be like Crayola? Yes, the crayon company. Um, Crayola just released Colors of the World crayons that include 24 skin tones. This is cool, yeah, yeah. So this is cool, and like especially in light of what's going on in our world, but we're here to talk about happy things. So I just say, why can't we all be like Crayola guys and recognize all the colors of the world?
SPEAKER_00I think everybody has had a hard time with that because even as a white dude, like, yeah, what what what what color do you color people?
SPEAKER_02Yellow or tan, which doesn't show up. Actually, it's really fun to like cut try coloring with kids when they only want to color with markers, and yeah, every every person is yellow.
SPEAKER_00Sort of things as a white person I never understood the value of seeing someone that looks like you doing something, yes, and the value of being like, hey, there is somebody that is my skin color, my race, my whatever doing this. Because I've had things where you get older and you're like, I do some things that a 30-year-old white dude doesn't usually do, and you kind of feel out of place, but then you say, like, oh hey, this guy does it as cool. So I think that's a great thing.
SPEAKER_02It's like a uh struggle I had moving back here, right? Because our my kids were at a or well, Elliot was at a daycare in the inner city of Milwaukee, like inner city, right downtown Milwaukee. So like he saw people of all different race. And now we come back here and it it's just not as uh, you know, it's not everywhere out, it's not everywhere around Lake Geneva. So we make a I I saw a really good face uh Facebook thread today actually about like some friends in Milwaukee and how they make sure their kids know like we're all the same here, we're all equal. So really important for those of us that have kids, get this box of crayons.
SPEAKER_00Obviously, the thing you need to do is just grab some people of different colors, cut everybody open, and show you know, same blood color comes out.
SPEAKER_02Right. So that's what we're talking about now.
SPEAKER_00It's not the answer.
SPEAKER_02Nick, what did you read about this week?
SPEAKER_00I we've talked about this before, but some good news. Network by John Krasinski that we we gave shout-outs to for his efforts to bring joy to people's lives through coronavirus. He sold out.
SPEAKER_02Yes, and he like is getting hate for it.
SPEAKER_00Yes, so of course, people are mad about everything. He said, I'm I was in this for eight episodes. I have other commitments with my friends who are kind of my production company. We're doing eight episodes. We got to the end of that, but it was so popular, people liked it so much. I don't want it to end. He was approached by CBS and they bought him out. Yep, and he's still to be the executive producer, and people are like, How dare you take this thing that was good and pure and sell it out? Yes, and I kind of get it a little bit. Sure. But also like, he's a person, like let him be. Would he put a lot of work and talent into this, and he's a talented dude. He's got a good looking wife, and his hair is so strong. So, yeah, all the talent. So he deserves that money. He, John Krasinski, you deserve that money.
SPEAKER_02We support you in case you're wondering.
SPEAKER_00But I think it's great that it's going on because it is a really cool thing. And if that's a positive thing that could come out of coronavirus, well then so be it.
SPEAKER_02If this ever ends, maybe we'll come up with a list of all the positive things that have come out of it because uh I think we could all use that.
SPEAKER_00You know, I was in the shower singing. Do you like to sing in the shower?
SPEAKER_02Uh, I like to sing in the car.
SPEAKER_00So I was singing in the shower and then I swallowed some soap and it became a soap opera, and it just got really awkward.
SPEAKER_02You guys, I love that this is on video because you saw that that was a genuine laugh, okay? But sometimes it's not always.
SPEAKER_00Time to take a break.
SPEAKER_02Okay, everybody, we're back with one of my favorite segments, our product recommendation. Bum bada bum. Oh, yeah, let's let's come up with another jingle. Um, so I get targeted all the time on Facebook and Instagram, and some people hate it. I love it because it's telling me what I need before I know.
SPEAKER_00Do you know what I got targeted by this week? What? Ballistic armor that for your torso that can stop military-grade rifle bullets. I was like, Why is that? We've been searching for a lot of security stuff to make sure nobody busts into our house.
SPEAKER_02So if somebody does, at least I have protective pounds at the store.
SPEAKER_00Ceramic armor. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Okay, well, so Nick is researching his ballistics armor. I was just buying a kid's book, okay? It's a kids' book, right?
SPEAKER_00Is it double as a bullet pro if she?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, definitely. This paperback book I bought. Um, I think also it benefits adults if they read this. This is a book called The Zen Pig, okay? It is from the cutest company called Puppy Dogs and Ice Cream, which honestly never heard of it before now. But I love a good kids' book. But I this book, um, you know, I clicked buy immediately. I think I bought two copies. I don't know if it was like buy one, get one free. Whatever. I got two copies in the mail to give to my sister as well. And it teaches the art of gratitude. So, again, in this lovely world, this is like something we're really trying to teach Elliot right now. It's easy for kids to be spoiled, and like we do a lot for our son and yes, Lucy as well. Yeah, but there are, of course, moments of like you're a kid, and we want to make sure like that you understand what gratitude is. And mommy here, I fill out a gratitude journal every night um for years. Uh Brittany got me one. That's the sister in Seattle, guys. Um gets me one every year at Christmas, and I um it took me a while to get in the swing of it. So now I just want to teach it to Elliot. And like when he's like writing regularly, maybe he'll want to do that every night.
SPEAKER_00I mean, the other day he had me take him for a ride around. He had me get him a water, had him get a slave, you know, foot rub, and then load up his plate with food and feed it to him. So yeah. But then he said thank you.
SPEAKER_01Right, yeah, that's it.
SPEAKER_00So very grateful kid.
SPEAKER_01That's exactly what we're going for, guys.
SPEAKER_00Uh, my product recommendation, you've probably heard of it. This is nothing groundbreaking, but as we're moving to the house, I'm just gonna give you a running commentary of stuff that's working for me and stuff that's not working for me. That's super helpful. We did got the huge television onto over the fireplace. Oh, did you see it?
SPEAKER_02I saw it in a box.
SPEAKER_00I'll have to show you.
SPEAKER_02It's not as exciting for me as it is for men.
SPEAKER_00It is beautiful. Uh, it took my dad and I about an hour to get it mounted. It's like as tall as meat. Sideways. They had like one bad thing in the instructions, but that's nice. We'll write the company later. Um, we are going and cutting the cord. Yep. Good for you. We're going with Fubo.tv. Oh. Um, which I really enjoy. If you enjoy sports, it's great. They have a lot of different channels. I was watching Ecuadorian soccer last night. Oh, thrilling stuff. It was live sports, and I was just like unbelievably. But that's not my that's not my product recognition. Okay. Um, we have a Roku. We got a Roku stick to plug into the back of the television, and it is so easy. Uh, we were both a little trepidatious about is it gonna be a lot of our work to watch television? You know, we're gonna have to get all these different apps, but the Roku, you have your little just so easy loads right up, has voice control on the remote, has headphones that if your darling dear daughter is sleeping in the room right there and you want to still watch your massive TV. His Roku's fancier than mine, so I have a Roku too. But it's just so nice with all the apps right there. You don't have to keep signing in and out of stuff. Yeah, boop. I want to watch this, I want to watch that.
SPEAKER_02So we have been cut the cord people for a long time. I don't even know. Years.
SPEAKER_00Are you a Roku person?
SPEAKER_02We have Roku, yeah. But we it's funny because like, so we have Netflix, Hulu, YouTube TV. Like, once I add it all up, I probably pay as much as cable, but I feel better not using it.
SPEAKER_00Amazon Prime video?
SPEAKER_02Amazon Prime, but I actually don't watch a ton on theirs. Tyler watches more.
SPEAKER_00Jack Ryan. So John Krasinski.
SPEAKER_02I am full in on a really dumb show on Netflix, but it is cheesy and wonderful.
SPEAKER_00What is it?
SPEAKER_02Sweet Magnolias.
unknownOh god.
SPEAKER_02It's terrible. Actually, it's not, it's lovely.
SPEAKER_00So that's my recommendation. Roku, if you are uh at all interested in streaming stuff, I think we played around with the fire sticks, they're nice, but they're a little too like pushy on Amazon.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna say this is a double recommendation for the Roku. We've had ours for years and love it.
SPEAKER_00Get the Roku.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. All right, guys. So now that we've discussed all of the TV that we like to watch, what are we eating this week?
SPEAKER_00What are we eating this week? Well, what do you have here? What are we eating?
SPEAKER_02Here's what I'm eating, guys. Is it chicken? It is not. I was gonna choose the chicken on a salad recipe, but I knew you'd all make fun of me, okay? So instead I chose the Asian recipe, which is like the next best thing. So we have an easy beef stir fry. So any recipe that has easy in the title is my jam. Nick's trying not to laugh over here at me.
SPEAKER_00No, I gotta write a note because there's something that I get for next week's episode. Oh boy. Stay tuned. Stay tuned. This is what we call teas.
SPEAKER_02This is this is that. So we have an easy beef stir fry. So, like, great Asian food. It's great to like just put in um whatever vegetables you have. Obviously, we prefer that you use things like brackets.
SPEAKER_00I thought there was writing on here, but it's just like a care sticker.
SPEAKER_02I wrote him a secret message on the bottom of his beer.
SPEAKER_00That was like he just can't read it.
SPEAKER_02So I'm all about the easy beef stir fry. You can, of course, substitute chicken if you'd like, but I'm all about the beef this week.
SPEAKER_00I do like doing the beef in with the stir fry, and you get some more of that like greasy, beefy flavor with the vegetables mixed up.
SPEAKER_02Greasy flavor is what I'm looking for here.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's like the restaurants say the reason why our vegetables taste good are because we cook it in butter and salt and you don't.
SPEAKER_02That's how I cooked my eggs this morning.
SPEAKER_00Butter and salt. My pick is a taco Tuesday pick, and it is my favorite. I knew this would be your pick name of all of the tacos. It's carnitas, but it's carnitas done in lard. If you really want to get greasy and delicious, you need lard, pork lard. It is one of the most superior fats of all the fats. Duck fat, as we've discussed previously, is the most superior fats, but lard is a very, very ranking of all the fats? We can do it, it's a very Ron Swanson ranking. But Uh, it is an awesome recipe. We sell lard, or you can render your own from pork fat if you want. But basically, you take your pork shoulder and just cover it in lard.
SPEAKER_02Slather that right on.
SPEAKER_00Slather it, cook it, and then you kind of fry it up, and the fat, the lard gets so crispy. So then you shred the tacos and you have the tender, flavorful, shredded taco with crispy burnt ends, and it's so delicious.
SPEAKER_02I love how you guys can see how excited he gets.
SPEAKER_00Delicious. And then you gotta do, you know, to do carnitas, you have to do it uh, you know, traditional Mexican style. You cannot do carnitas gringo style. I agree. It has to be just the onion, the cilantro, uh, squeeze of lime juice. If you want to do a little jalapeno, that's fine. If you want to do a little salsa verde, that's fine.
SPEAKER_02I just like sub my onions for jalapenos.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, don't do, don't, please, God, don't put the tomatoes and the shredded cheese. Don't tell Nick if you do. No, just with a carnitas. I don't care if you deal with the ground beef, that's fine. But with the carnitas, respect, okay? Hashtag respect. Okay, everybody. Pork carnitas in lard. That's my pick. Alright, so it is time for random facts and the more you know Bridget. You're welcome, guys. Um, I'm gonna start because I'm really happy. I want to see your face when I announce what this is. Okay. My theme today. Uh today, the release day is May 31st. Jordy Nelson's birthday is May 31st. So this is a Jordy Nelson. Jordy Nelson!
SPEAKER_01This is a Jordy Nelson themed fact set. You guys, he's the worst actor.
SPEAKER_00He's so bad.
SPEAKER_01But he's pretty and I love the Packers.
SPEAKER_00He is going to be 35. What? Yep, he's 35 as of May 31st. Oh my god, you guys were the same age. I mean, you really really missed out there. So, Jordy, we all know he's a retired wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers. Um, great. I'd like to watch him play for played for the Los Angeles Oakland Rangers in Las Vegas. That was a mistake for one year. Uh, but he, we all know he's a wide receiver, he is just an all-around amazing athlete. He won an AAU national 400-meter championship as a 10-year-old. He won Kansas high school state titles in the 100-meter sprint, the 200-meter sprint, the 400-meter sprint, and the long jump. When he was 10? No, no, no. This is a high school. Oh, high school, I'm sorry, right. Finally, he was also an all-state basketball player.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yes.
SPEAKER_00He was all-state for basketball. He was like more kind of all-district for football, and he was a quarterback in high school.
SPEAKER_02I feel like I heard that, read that something somewhere.
SPEAKER_00But that makes sense. When he went to college at Kansas State, he walked on. He did not get a scholarship. Yes, I did know that. As a defensive back.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I didn't know that. Yes.
SPEAKER_00So he went from quarterback to defensive back. So when did he flip? After his freshman year, they're like, uh, maybe you should be a wide receiver. You can run fast. So they they made him a wide receiver. Um what a good choice, coach. Jordy is a big truck guy. Oh, yeah. He's a pickup truck type of guy. And he prefers Chevrolets. Oh. His first car, I'm curious if this is anything that you would have been jealous of back in the day, was a two-door Chevy blazer.
SPEAKER_02A two-door, yeah. That is exactly what I was looking for in all my boyfriends.
SPEAKER_00Ooh, you got that blazer? Two-door blazer. Oh man, those things.
SPEAKER_02I think my aunt used to have one of those. Like two-door cars were the rage at some point.
SPEAKER_00He when he made it to the NFL, he bought a Tahoe as the car, but then decided it wasn't big enough to put things in the back. Like his lawnmower got himself a Chevy endorsement deal and got a Chevy Silverade. I'm sorry. His lawnmower? Yeah, he wants to, you know, put his lawnmower in the back of his car to take it place.
SPEAKER_02He's got two children too, doesn't he?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's got two children.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Two children. That's not part of the facts, but I did find that as part of my research. So, at the end of every NFL season, you know, some people go to Hawaii, some people go and do, you know, I know this one. He goes back to the family farm in Riley, Kansas and does farm work for 12 hours a day. He would drive the combines, he would round up the uh family's 1,000 cobs. He and Elliot would love each other. He stacks hay, and that was his workout. He has been on record as saying he identifies more as a farmer than a football player.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, obviously. But this is why people love him. He just likes this wholesome.
SPEAKER_00And he's a terrible actor. So bad. We are for our last fact. Um, I talked about this with my friend Seth last night. Shout out to Seth. Hi, Seth. Uh he just announced on uh a podcast, not ours, unfortunately. Jordi, if you'd like to come on, we'd love to have you.
SPEAKER_02I would be fine with that.
SPEAKER_00He's currently building what he self-described as a mansion for Kansas in Kansas.
SPEAKER_02A mansion mansion for Kansas?
SPEAKER_00I don't a mansion, he said a mansion, well, a mansion for Kansas. Oh, okay. So I don't know if that means it's actually like 15,000 square feet because it's so cheap. Or if it's like 3,000. He's like, well, in Kansas, it's so I'm not sure exactly what that means. Okay. But while he's doing this, he's living with his brother. He's, you know, like just where's his brother live? Kansas? Yep, Kansas, the family farm. He's at the family farm. Sure. And uh he to decorate his house, he hired an ex-teammate's wife. AJ Hawk's wife is the interior designer. So it's all in the film. Yep, so A.J. Hawk and A.J. Hawk's wife are quarantined with Jordy Nelson and Jordy Nelson's.
SPEAKER_01This is amazing.
SPEAKER_00And they're all like doing this house.
SPEAKER_02I want to go there and quarantine. I know.
SPEAKER_00I really like A.J. Hawk. I know he was, you know, controversial, but I like him.
SPEAKER_02Maybe when they're done, they can just come help with my renovation.
SPEAKER_00That would be great.
SPEAKER_02Um, since we were talking about the Packers, this is not planned, but I need to tell Nick in case he doesn't know this about me.
SPEAKER_00You like the Packers?
SPEAKER_02I do. I also love Donald Driver.
SPEAKER_00Double D.
SPEAKER_02One of the things I love about Donald Driver is he is a spokesperson for Goodwill. Oh, that is. I cannot speak to his current contract. I should say he used to be at least. And I met him where? A book signing at Goodwill. He's written two children's books.
SPEAKER_00I love those commercials he does for Travel Wisconsin where he's, you know, dancing. I just think they were so well produced, so well directed. Whoever came up with that idea to have Donald Driver on it and do everything. And I think he is the one. I love it. Travel Wisconsin, great work.
SPEAKER_02That yeah, those commercials are great and look them up. Maybe we'll post a link to them if you haven't seen it. But um, Donald Driver, children's books, and he signed them at Goodwill was the best day of my life. Okay. Maybe not. I mean like marriage, birth of kids. But all right, guys.
SPEAKER_00This is like Would Tyler even be mad if you left him for Donald Driver?
SPEAKER_02I I don't know, man. Jordy Nelson, Donald Driver. I think that my kids would like Jordy Nelson's farm more. My turn for facts this week, guys. I have things to do with Crayola, because why not? I was so proud of their box of crayons.
SPEAKER_00Like the crayons?
SPEAKER_02Like the crayons.
SPEAKER_00Like the crayons. Oh, yeah, it makes sense.
SPEAKER_02Because you Yeah, man, we talked about the crayons. So I'm all in. I did a deep dive on Crayola. Did you eat them? I did not. More on that later. So I've got a few fun facts. I found a whole bunch, narrowed it down to three, because I don't know if you guys find them interesting, but I did. So first, do you know how Crayola came up with its name?
SPEAKER_00I do not.
SPEAKER_02I know. I think it'd be weird if you knew. Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I know a lot of random stuff, but not this one.
SPEAKER_02I know. I'm gonna keep quizzing you every day. Okay. Okay, okay, great. So we talked about women earlier. Yay woman. Yay women. A woman came up with the name Crayola. She was the wife of one of the company's co-owners, actually. So Cray comes from the French word meaning chock.
SPEAKER_00I thought it was Kanye, you know, like Cray C-R-A-Y.
SPEAKER_02I feel like I need to spell this out for people like Nick. So Cray comes from the French word meaning chock, and Ola comes from Olagonus, which means oily. So oily chuck, which is like totally logical. I love a good logical name. Okay. Like I once said someone was trying to come up with a company name, and I'm like, the first thing I do is look at the about me to see like why why the company is named that. Just saying.
SPEAKER_00Like Magna Vox, or as they say Magna Vox. It means great voice in Latin. Ah, see? So, you know, it makes sense for audience.
SPEAKER_02Okay. If your company name doesn't make sense, I can't get on board.
SPEAKER_00All names should be in Latin because it's strong.
SPEAKER_02It does not surprise me that you say that. Is Simona's name Latin?
SPEAKER_00No, it's uh Okay, but she's strong anyway. Yeah, it goes back. It's right. We want it. If we had a boy, it would have been Moximus. Means the greatest. No, it would have been Moximus.
SPEAKER_02Okay, poor kid. Well, thanks, Alice Binney, who maybe it's Biney. I don't know. She was the wife of the co-owner, so good job, Alice. Good job. Great. Okay. First box of crayons dates back way further than what I thought. It goes back to 1903.
SPEAKER_00Doesn't that seem like that? Yeah, that seems a long time ago.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I don't know. It just surprised me, I guess, but it's more than a hundred years ago. You guys can tell me why I'm dumb and why that shouldn't be surprising.
SPEAKER_00No, it seems like something that you would have, you know, like it's probably some industrial byproduct in 1930, like, oh, the kids need some stuff because it's the depression. And you know, like whatever.
SPEAKER_02I can go back on uh wacky uses.com, which is where I found this information and see.
SPEAKER_00Seems more like something from the 30s.
SPEAKER_02So, okay, this crayon, this box of crayons, cost a nickel.
SPEAKER_00A nickel?
SPEAKER_02Five cents and only have eight colors. Can you name them? No cheating.
SPEAKER_00No cheating. Alright, so we would have blue, green, yellow, purple.
unknownRed.
SPEAKER_02Purple. It's violet.
SPEAKER_00Violet, whatever.
SPEAKER_02You're turning violet, violet. Violet. Brown, black. Orange. Most people would just like go in the order of the rainbow, but yes, you got them all correct.
SPEAKER_00Does the rainbow have an order? Are you talking about like a spectrum of colors?
SPEAKER_02Roigee biv?
SPEAKER_00I don't know what the fuck.
SPEAKER_02What?
SPEAKER_00Okay. I went to public school, okay?
SPEAKER_02Obviously, you only learned Roig G biv at St. Francis. Okay, anyway, yes. Five cents for the first box of crayons, eight colors in it. Classics. I think we're up to what? Like what's the biggest box of crayons?
SPEAKER_00There's like 192 one.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god, that's insane.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I know 96. I wasn't rich enough to have it though.
SPEAKER_02St.
SPEAKER_00Francis had them, though. I think it was Primary School.
SPEAKER_02I think it was 96 that came with like the sharpener. I don't remember. But that sharpener was garbage.
SPEAKER_00I always got like the 24. We were poor.
SPEAKER_02Ooh. Public school. So all the schools here in Lake Cheneau Bar great. The scent of Crayola crayons is among the 20 most recognizable to American adults.
SPEAKER_00I believe that.
SPEAKER_02Do you? Why? Because when you get all up in it, you know, you're coloring, you're like if you're Nick, you're eating and sniffing your crayons, but the rest of us are just collaring with them. Come on. I know as soon as my kids put those in their mouths, they haven't yet knock on wood. I'm gonna rip that right out.
SPEAKER_00Just rip it right out.
SPEAKER_02But I do like the waxy candy that has like the juice inside of it, which is like the same thing. Just like, if only there was juice inside my crayons.
SPEAKER_00Oh god, that's gross. Maybe it's like it's like you know, there's one color on the inside and another on the outside, and you get like a swirl.
SPEAKER_02Who doesn't love a juicy surprise? Okay, guys, we're just gonna move right on from that.
SPEAKER_00Right on from the juicy surprise to Nick's favorite segment. Time for King Carter.
SPEAKER_02All right. Bridget.
SPEAKER_00Bridget, your turn. What do you got?
SPEAKER_02Alright, guys. So usually we talk about like, you know, something making fun of my kids, and I swore I wasn't gonna do that, but I had like a nice all-American weekend with them. It was Memorial Day weekend. I talked last week about um all the pool things and like backyard things because I don't like being outside when it's hot if I can't like have access to water.
SPEAKER_00And unlike Elliot's TikTok, you followed through on this one.
SPEAKER_02Lucy's TikTok.
SPEAKER_00Lucy's TikTok, whatever.
SPEAKER_02It's still on my list, and Brittany is really good about following up and making sure I'm doing it. So like she keeps reminding me and making me feel bad. Okay, so one day you'll get my TikTok, okay? Until then. I'm playing in the backyard with my kids. It was um, I wrapped up the like I wrapped up Elliot's new swimsuit and pool, and like he loves to open presents. So I like put it all together as a gift, ripped it open.
SPEAKER_00And then write them down in the gratitude journal.
SPEAKER_02Hopefully. 8:30 on Saturday morning, he opens it, and at 8:35, we were outside. I'm like, uh oh, it's like a little earlier than I planned, but like uh shame on me. I should have like waited.
SPEAKER_00Did you have your coffee?
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, man, because we've been up for like three hours in my house already.
SPEAKER_00At least there's coffee.
SPEAKER_02Hopefully, I'm drinking water at this point to try and get some in. I don't know. So, shoving water down my throat. So we went outside all day Saturday, all day Sunday, and like the kids just had so much fun. Like, we did classic, we had watermelon, we had the popsicles, all the.
SPEAKER_00What part of the watermelon did you eat?
SPEAKER_02Not the rind. Check out Lucy Mae Leach on Instagram if you want to check out my my daughter eating the rind of a watermelon. Whatever, it probably felt good on her teeth, okay? Probably. Don't judge. So, but now to the point where I'm a terrible mother. I have seen parents like, you know, people are very good about getting their kids home to sleep, and I'm just not. Sometimes Tyler and I made the decision. Like, we came over to Nick's, Nick and Sarah's for a barbecue, okay? Before you get at us, Nick and I have been together from the beginning. We worked together, our kids have been together from the beginning. So our families have been in the same circle since March when this all began. So we came over to enjoy this barbecue we talked about, and it was like a long day in the sun. The kids were definitely gonna get tired.
SPEAKER_00It was hot, it was sunny.
SPEAKER_02It was, and like it came and went like kids' bedtime. So we made the choice, like it's gonna be what it is, okay? So poor Lucy. I Tyler actually had Lucy in her arms, and then I made him switch because I was like, we need to record what's happening right now. I always see these kids that are so tired they fall asleep at the table. Never my kids, they're never that tired, okay? Until this night. This was Sunday night.
SPEAKER_00It was amazing.
SPEAKER_02And Lucy just like she looked drunk, and so I took her from Tyler. I was like, you need to record this. This is gold. So I had her in my arms, and she was just like straight up bobbin, and then like she'd do this. And then eventually she fell asleep, and it was lovely. She doesn't do that anymore. So I sat down and had a beer while she was asleep in my arms, and Nick reminded me that my son was inside.
SPEAKER_00And Elliot was passed out on the couch, sitting upright with his head on, so he had his dad's phone watching Chippendale.
SPEAKER_02Cho chucho Chippendale.
SPEAKER_00And he's just like he also had passed. He probably managed to hold the phone upright still and have his head on it. Yeah, he he was so tired. Like, I mean, I got quarantine hair. I like it.
SPEAKER_02No, I ask Elliot every day. Yes, I ask him every day if I can cut his hair. Ma, not until the hair cutting station's open. I'm like, okay, well, they're open. We're not going. So his hair is just like shit, it needs to be cut.
SPEAKER_00It was cute. Okay, ma'am.
SPEAKER_02Tell me about your week with your kid.
SPEAKER_00Well, uh, mine's more of a little self-deprecating story.
SPEAKER_02Oh, excellent.
SPEAKER_00Um I can't so I can't wait. We we are a sleeper family. We like putting Simona in sleepers.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_00She likes, you know, they're they're so like comfy and cozy and I feel so constrained.
SPEAKER_02How do you feel? Like, ugh, my feet are stuck. It's like a sleeping bag.
SPEAKER_00Pants are the worst though. Like, don't you not, wouldn't you rather not have to wear pants?
SPEAKER_02Uh, pants with feet are sleepers, so just take those off.
SPEAKER_00See, like my uh But like the waistband situation. If you have a sleeper on, you don't have to worry about the waistband situation.
SPEAKER_02Oh, this is a good point, Nick. Okay.
SPEAKER_00So like when you chug 20 ounces of milk in you know two hours.
SPEAKER_02I'll just start wearing onesies to work.
SPEAKER_00Is that cool? You know, as long as they're like panda onesies, totally.
SPEAKER_02I have one with donuts on it.
SPEAKER_00There we go.
SPEAKER_02Okay, great.
SPEAKER_00So um it's getting warmer, she's getting bigger, so we're putting her in, you know, real clothes, like pants. And uh what I've realized is, and if Sarah was listening, if she's upstairs, she could come down and give you just like a 10-minute rant about how terrible I am at this. Uh, I'm not good at putting pants on. Yeah, what is so hard about it? Well, so as the saying goes, I put my pants on like any other man, just one leg at a time. Turns out with a small child, that's you don't put it on.
SPEAKER_01No, you just like shove them on.
SPEAKER_00Okay, do it quickly. You get your leg in and you're like, oh cool, we got it on, and then boom, gone, and you gotta get the other leg on and she's you know rolling.
SPEAKER_02Back and forth, man. She's messing with you.
SPEAKER_00So um I'm bad at putting pants on. Did you learn that? No, I just get yelled at that you gotta roll it up. Do you need a ticket? I don't know what that means.
SPEAKER_02Roll it up. So, like, like when you put socks on a child's foot, which you'll learn. She's she doesn't really need socks, I suppose, at this point if you have like. No, if you want something done quickly, like roll them on. It's less space to shove a leg through. So like roll it down quickly through. Also, like put both legs on as quickly as you can, man.
SPEAKER_00Huh.
SPEAKER_02Look at his confusion, isn't it? Yeah, I don't know. This is fun on video.
SPEAKER_00A YouTube dad, yeah. Dad, how do I on this one? Dad, how do I put my child's?
SPEAKER_02I think that we should have a video of you trying to do it.
SPEAKER_00I have the camera here.
SPEAKER_02We could just Yeah, if you could just like set yourself, I think it's really important. So, like, while you're trying to get your daughter dressed, let us see how bad you are at it.
SPEAKER_00I'm pretty bad at it. Okay, that sounds great. But you know, she has clothes.
SPEAKER_02Then we can help.
SPEAKER_00She's fine. We're just here to help.
SPEAKER_02We're just here to help.
SPEAKER_00So with that admission of failure, I think that is uh what we got for this episode for you.
