It's a weird week as we close in on the anniversary of realizing corona virus was a serious thing and would start changing our lives forever. It seems strange to break life up into "before" and "after" corona when it's only been a year, but it still seems like a huge divider. Bridget has had quite the week with illness in her house and it's a fitting topic of conversation for how we generally feel this week!

Don't despair, we opened some Irish beer (made by Guinness, but not Guinness Draught) and soldiered on with some joyful conversation. Here's what we talked about this week:

We hope you enjoyed this week's episode and were able to laugh at our frustrations. At least someone is, and if you can't laugh along with friends, what's the point? We appreciate your sympathy and support!

If you can please subscribe, rate us, review us, and share with your friends, we'd really appreciate it. Remember, you can follow us and get in touch with us through the following channels:

Have a great week everybody - we'll talk next week!

~ Bridget and Nick

SPEAKER_00

Hello, everybody. It is a new edition of the Dinner Plus Drinks podcast brought to you by Bridget today. Just by me, guys. By Bridget's feelings today.

SPEAKER_01

My feelings. It feels like it's Sesame Street episode a little bit.

SPEAKER_00

It does a little bit. So we were talking off air, uh, what you know, what our day is going like, what we're feeling, and it's just like this overwhelming kind of like, wow, it's been a year of Intense anxiety. Of intense anxiety with COVID and a very special something coming up this weekend.

SPEAKER_01

I would think. So Elliot's birthday coming up. So his birthday is actually um will be after when you are listening to this, but we were going to be celebrating this. Well, it could be before.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, yeah, you're right. We don't know when it was released.

SPEAKER_01

So his birthday is after the release of this episode. Um, but we were going to celebrate this weekend. So between the recording and the release, uh, just an outdoor thing, like a little outdoor carnival fun fair. Um sounds awesome. I know, I think it'd be really great. And it's supposed to be like, you know, every eight-year-old boy's eight. He's not eight, he just looks eight. But he is turning five, which is like, I feel like uh should be like a monumentous thing for parents.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it really does seem like it should be a big I haven't thought of. Five seems like a big number, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I'm just now stra I haven't had a lot of like time to think through more than an hour or two in advance um these days. Just spend one of those weeks. Um, because you'll learn more about it in Kid Corner. Again. Just repeat the story from last week.

SPEAKER_00

But but different.

SPEAKER_01

Same, same, but different.

SPEAKER_00

Same, same but different. Last year or you're you know, my my week has been just kind of a drag, in all honesty. There's just talking about the year of COVID versary. I don't know if I've said this on the podcast before, but when people ask me, I work a lot, work is a big part of my life, probably more than's healthy, but um it's really tied up in who I am as a person and it's things I enjoy. So it just kind of is, and people ask me, What's your busy season at work? When are you busy? I'm like, eh, it's kind of a sprint from Mother's Day to New Year's Day because once you get that that Mother's Day holiday, people are grilling, people want stuff. Uh, we don't slow down after Labor Day. We seem to pack all the events in September every year, Oktoberfest, uh, Thanksgiving, holiday wine things, Christmas. Um, and this year with COVID, it really started this week last year, and it was just this incessant sprint.

SPEAKER_01

Like, when was it in your mind?

SPEAKER_00

It was like the It was this weekend, yeah. Was it this week? It was because we had Elliot's birthday party thing. Yes, and that was the start of like I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Is this Should we be doing this? And it was at a bowling alley last week.

SPEAKER_00

So we were having this discussion because right after that we had our pop-up pub scheduled to happen in the Lake Chieven Country Meets parking lot. So we're like, well, if we do Elliot's birthday party, that means like we could do a pop-up pub, right?

SPEAKER_01

So to me, that's like I don't remember it really being a question at Elliot's party, but I think it was like five days of over. I remember the 14th is the day I remember. Because then the 17th was when we were gonna do our pub, obviously. And we were like, we canceled it, I think, on the 16th or something. I don't know. We were like, oh no, we can't do this.

SPEAKER_00

Oh no. Yeah, it was crazy. So I just uh we put off, you know, it's like um Navy ships when the USS Nimitz just returned to home port after a year at sea. A year. And um it has to go to deep overhaul now because it shouldn't be at sea for a year. You put all these things off that are like, hey, every six months we need to clean the rust off the anchor or whatever. Scheduled maintenance. Yeah, scheduled maintenance. And this year we haven't done any scheduled maintenance. It's all been fixing the leak. You know, we're the little Dutch boy with our fingers in the dam. We're not actually fixing it, we're just plugging fingers and things. It's a really good analogy. I'm just gonna keep going with the analogies. The chickens have come home to roost this month for us.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, it feels that way like this week. That's I was telling Nick off air, I was just at a doctor's appointment, and she's like, Yeah, generally, like, are you rested and getting enough sleep? Should I look like that? You know, and I was like, No, I just literally was like, no, I'm not. So that was a funny little discussion. I love the doctor's appointments for that reason to make you feel like extra shit.

SPEAKER_00

So this has been a week where like I've just been catching up with stuff. I don't remember. And I was trying to think of like what I cooked, and I cooked some good stuff, and uh, I had asked Sarah. That like never happens. This is funny because of what you're gonna your favorite thing you ate this week.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, wait till you hear about mine, which is not typed in here.

SPEAKER_00

But that's what beer is for. So it's almost St. Patrick's Day. We didn't want to go full Guinness yet.

SPEAKER_01

Because we just want you to know what else is out there besides Guinness.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so we have a harp or lager or a smittix ale. Yes. Do you have a fave? I like them both, but I was gonna go with the smittics.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I I was gonna go with the harp. I like them both too, but um lovely. I don't know. I love their branding.

SPEAKER_00

It's beautiful. It used to be garbage.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, and then they they went, I don't know, the right way. Is this what it originally used to look like?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they went back to like the original colors and original trailing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, as they should have, man. So yes, if you're not feeling Guinness, we've got other options for you. And also not Irish cream.

SPEAKER_00

Also, not Irish cream. Gross. I love Irish cream. And the cool thing is this beer was room temperature 30 minutes ago. But you see, if you're watching, it's in a plastic bucket. The fast way to cool down your beverages cup of sea salt, or not sea salt, just salty salt. Table salt. Um fill to about two-thirds up, put your beer in, fill to or wine or whatever, two-thirds up with ice, cold water on top, throw in the fridge or the freezer. 15-20 minutes, your ice cold beverages are ready.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think my dad taught me this probably with white wine. I don't know, but yeah, he he like spun it. Is there something to the spinning? Just to get the uh water mix up the salt. Yep, yep. Yeah. Nick was like, what are we gonna drink today? I said, Oh, I think we need to have these beers that are, you know, we need to start talking about St. Patrick's Day.

SPEAKER_00

Um but I'm I mean, I filmed some Guinness corned beef stuff yesterday. I feel I'm feeling we're feeling it. Look at the Irish.

SPEAKER_01

I am trying to like look forward to that as because it got ruined last year and we all love St. Patrick's Day around here. Maiden name Gallagher. Anyway, we were talking about this beer, and he's like, but it's warm. I said, do the ice and salt trick.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you, Bridget, for tip. You're pro tip.

SPEAKER_01

That's right, guys. Anyway, so if you're not into Guinness, which you should be, um, I didn't used to think I was, to be honest. And then I recently had it not so long ago with our friend Kevin Fleming. I was like, man, I do love this.

SPEAKER_00

And it's really good for the anemic people of the world.

SPEAKER_01

Hi, that's me.

SPEAKER_00

So lots of good nutrients in there. So if you It is a healthy beer, is it? Some quote, healthy beer. You know, I think Kevin told on the podcast they used to give it to the women who just delivered because of the proteins in there and stuff. So it's I wish that was a fancy before. Very good. I know. Why don't America is our so many prudes. We we brought a bottle of champagne into the livery room.

SPEAKER_01

They're like, Oh yeah, we got way in trouble for that with Elliot.

SPEAKER_00

Like it's like, screw you. I'm paying, you know, this is like my thing on college sometimes when these professors are like, you know, it's like I'm paying you, jerk face.

SPEAKER_01

I did think it look, it didn't cross our minds that we couldn't bring a bottle in. I think I don't remember if it was champagne or red wine. It was five years ago, guys. But with Elliot, we delivered. It was champagne. Don't don't get yourself but I really missed red wine. So it was um, you know, in the city in Milwaukee, and we thought nothing of it, but the nurses like turns out a lot of those babies that were being born right next door to Elliot were were being born addicted to drugs, which was so terrible. And like, I'm sure we weren't supposed to know that, but they the nurses were very nice to us because we were quote normal. I'm sorry, I don't like calling, I don't like that phrase, but we were doing we were a very traditional family and childbirth. So anyway, I wish they would have given me a Guinness. You weren't drug adults as you I did not have any drugs in my system. Yes, I did. I got an epidural.

SPEAKER_00

So other than that, other than that, no illicit substances, nothing illegal.

SPEAKER_01

Well, that's good to know. Anyway, okay, so you had to ask Sarah about what you ate this week?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and she's like, I don't actually remember that much either, but you made really good lasagna. Oh, that's hilarious. I made really good lasagna. We that sounds good. What day was it? We were um it was Sunday of last week, actually. We went out on a family adventure because it was so beautiful, and we went to Simple Bakery for some facasha. Um basically we wanted facasha. We just want carbs. And then we were like, okay, let's do something fun with it. And Simona's gotten a little touch pickier on what she eats. So it's like, you know, lasagna, she's gonna love it. And I was gonna do these little mini ones uh where you take the noodle, put it in a cupcake thing, yeah, the filling a little bit, and so you get these little mini ones. I'm like, this is gonna be perfect for Simona, it'll be fun for us. We can have a little bit of lasagna and some facasha. A lot of facasha. And just like, you know, just shove it in your mouth that way. I'm like, this is gonna be a lot of fun. And then it was like 445. I was like, crap! Lasagna takes like an hour and a half hour.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. Yeah, but don't you know about cheater lasagna? What's cheater lasagna? Like my favorite thing. You buy a frozen ravioli, like you can get pretty big frozen ravioli, yeah, and then you brown ground beef and mix sauce with it. So beef, sauce, you put that down, and then you put ravi frozen ravioli, beef sauce, frozen ravioli, cheese. Well, it still takes an hour to bake. No, it doesn't, because the frozen ravi you can cook the frozen ravioli ahead of time if you want, and then you're just warming it all together. Well, we used like lasagna noodles. No, I mean I know, but if you're looking for a faster way to do it.

SPEAKER_00

I like that because like I made the meat sauce and was really good. Oh I don't know. So we just ate after Simona went down instead of eating with her, which we usually do because we like to, you know, family, eat some food, all that type of stuff. Worked out, it was delicious. The leftovers were magnifique. I do love lasagna leftovers, it just gets bad. I think it's tomato in it. Just like it's like the acidity, like just it's so good. I love what about you? What did you do? I have nothing on the headline.

SPEAKER_01

And the reason is because like we are just I couldn't think of anything either, but also there's been so much barfing in my household the past week that I cannot think of food. I'm doing everything I can to avoid it. So, like, I'm gonna say saltines. Um, just kidding, I didn't eat any saltines, but everyone else is. Uh, yeah, we've had a lot of sickness going around our um extended family, my inner family. Uh, and so I am putting nothing here because it's like, you know what? I used to remember when I would stay home sick from school because I was puking, there would always be a Pizza Hut commercial on, and it just made me want to barf.

SPEAKER_00

It was like the worst. Yeah, that always happens.

SPEAKER_01

So I'm just like, honestly, I'm I'm here today with super high anxiety about the barfing. And so I'm like, I don't know. I all I want to eat is saltines just in case like just in case I get sick next. Or maybe just do all protein shakes. Ew, I that's disgusting. Once I threw up a smoothie when I was hung over, like in a crosswalk.

SPEAKER_00

I just like couldn't, it was disgusting. It's like on your former life when you used to do the downtown stuff, and uh you had Oktoberfest, and you know, we'd show up early to people, you know, we'd come help to me and Tyler and other people of your friend group. We'd come help set up, and and one of the things that we had to do was clean up a barf in the streets.

SPEAKER_01

I did it. Oh yeah, yeah. When oh yeah, from the bars the night before.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, uh because the city doesn't do it because they evidently it's not their job. And we had to do it by shuttling buckets of water back. Oh my god, I remember that because it was in a crosswalk, like in the curb. And it was the like somebody threw up a smoothie at two in the morning.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, you guys, this is my fault. Once you start talking about puke stories, you can't stop. Like maybe our whole episode should be about that, and just don't listen if you're as anxiety-ridden as me.

SPEAKER_00

Another cool thing that's happening the day we're recording this is first Friday's in downtown Lake Geneva. Speaking of downtown Lake Geneva, they're gonna stay open late. Um they have these flags. Oh, cool that look something like they're basically ripping off Milwaukee's colors, it feels like. I mean, I like Milwaukee. I do too. Uh, I thought we were more on like a nautical theme in Lake Geneva.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's interesting.

SPEAKER_00

Red and and stuff. But it's very exciting. Yeah. So good job, Lake Geneva.

SPEAKER_01

I hope people come and shop late. And I hope the stores continue to do it because it takes a little while to get rampant.

SPEAKER_00

So if you if you listen to this cool next Friday, next first Friday, April. April before 2nd.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because the fourth is Easter.

SPEAKER_00

Yep. Go and uh shop late at Lake Geneva.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, cool, man. Good shout out. That's a live update.

SPEAKER_00

Live update. So um you got some you do have some some good news stories.

SPEAKER_01

Two, I've got two. I'm gonna share.

SPEAKER_00

Do you have a hard time choosing?

SPEAKER_01

I had three, okay. So I made a choice. I'm impressed. I deleted one.

SPEAKER_02

Let's go into the edit history.

SPEAKER_01

I get I it's committed to memory, I can tell you about it. Um, okay, so there's a website called My Modern Met that I've definitely shared before, but I love articles on their site. It always pops up on my social media and then I get lost on their website. But recently I saw an article about two men. I love when people take like weird, weird things they found in the environment or like products that would normally go to waste and then make something cool about it. Like there's a company that um takes old um like airline seat belts and the leather from airline seats, and they make like really cool accessories and and bags. But anyway, these men created leather, quote leather, from cactus. And it's it's in an effort to help save animals and the environment because they talk about leather is an $80 billion industry um and it uses animal products and harsh chemicals. So, like obviously, it's bad for the environment, it's not a great thing for animals. But it's good for Lake Shine country meets bottom line. Yes, but you know, turning it into a purse is not whatever. So these men um got this idea of using like use this different raw material that has a similar kind of texture, a similar kind of feel. And anyway, spent a lot of time, um, I mean, spent a lot of time doing this. Obviously, the products I've never touched, so I can't speak to it, but I would be willing to try it. I think that this is great. It's um certified organic, you know, if that's important to you. But dig in if you want to learn a little bit more about this. Um, there's an like so this product, there's a really cool product, like I said, with airline recycled parts. Um, there's a line of product with cork.

SPEAKER_00

Um, some cork is super sustainable.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, cork. My dad actually bought us each like a purse made out of cork for the holidays one year. So so anyway, dig into products like that. I think it's really cool.

SPEAKER_00

I bet that's good for boating because it floats when you have it overboard.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I haven't chucked it overboard to test it, but I will. So yeah, you go right ahead next.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Because we'll just skip mine. It's a discussion point more of it more than an article. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um, mine is about Dolly Parton. Sure. Who has helped, I don't know. The headline is Dolly gets a dose of her own medicine because she literally helped fund the Moderna vaccine.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, really?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So Dolly Parton, you know, she does all this cool stuff with getting books to kids. She does all this cool stuff about nice things for people. She does a lot of philanthropy. She's actually kind of cool the more you dig into her. And she invested, donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University to help develop the Moderna vaccine. Um, so she got her shot live on camera. Great. And um, she did a video saying, Well, hey, it's me, um, and talked about how she's getting her vaccine. She was encouraging people to do it. And she sang into song, singing the song Jolene. Oh my god, instead singing vaccine. Could you sing it? Uh Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, vaccine. Oh my god, because once you're dead, then it's a bit too late. Um, and then she doubled down on her message. She said, I'm not trying to be funny anymore, but I'm dead serious about this. If you want to get back to normal, this would be a great shot in the arm. And I just want to say to all of you cowards out there, don't be such a chicken squat. Go out there and get your shot. So props to you, Dolly Parton. Way to use your platform to encourage people to get the shot. It is great. Um, yeah, so that that's my story. There was another one um about a song she released. It was in backwards, and she got her dog back, her job back, and her husband back.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god. All right, we'll be back. All right, we're back with a section I've been looking forward to because my product recommendation is great. And this company, it's a company recommendation more than a product. Mine too. What? I can't just pick it up. We didn't even play this. Shockingly, I cannot just pick one item from this company, but I'm recommending Saturday morning pancakes and not just the delicious, warm, fluffy food on a Saturday. There is a company called SaturdaymorningPancakes.com, and they have the funniest. If you grew up like if you're a product of the late 90s, early 2000s, such as myself, um, you might really appreciate this company. They have products like sip it like it's hot, and that's their coffee, okay? But my favorite is the sweater that I wore on the last episode of Pinkies Up, uh, where we talked about pizza and what wine paired nicely with pizza. So go back and watch it. It is a very normal-looking sweater. You'd think, oh, that's a nice sweater. But right over on my shoulders, there's a little embroidered comment that said, brush your shoulders off.

SPEAKER_00

So I think you need a t-shirt or a coffee mug or your coffee should say sip it like it's scalding.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, sip it like it's fucking really hot. Really, really hot. I love a good like rap pun, and especially when it's like a beautiful floral thing, and then it's got like rap lyrics from a Jay-Z song. So there's just some really funny things on here that are subtle. I mean, there's ones that just like say it across your chest, but the ones I love are like really subtle. I'm telling you, will you have to go back and look at that episode of Pinkies Up and see my sweater. I should have worn it today, but that would have been weird. It would have been weird. So, anyway, Saturday morning pancakes, really funny, really great if you're looking for a gift for anyone that's around. They have St. Patrick's Day's. They currently have a whole line of St. Patrick's stuff, but my issue with St. Patrick's stuff is like, oh, okay, it's all the same. We're I don't know. I need some new St. Patrick's Day stuff. Like, don't tell me you're getting green and stupid and falling down or whatever. I don't know. But when I sip, you sip, we sip. Okay, well, I'll take it. I'll take that. Anyway, hilarious brand. Check it out.

SPEAKER_00

My recommendation is Salomoth Brewery for everybody in the greater Chicagoland area. I met with Nick from the brewery yesterday. He was on our podcast a year and a half ago about ish. Now it seems like forever. But he popped up to uh do some beer sampling, talk about some ideas we had, uh, just say hey, we get along. So it was nice to see him. I love their beer. Um, and they so we're like, hey, you know how how's Corona for you? How's Corona for you? And they took and built a 5,000 square foot outdoor tap room that in the summer they they had all these, you know, six-person high tops separated out. They had a lot of fun stuff with there. But then in the winter, they turned it into Camp Salomoth, which they put uh mulch down all over it, got all the Christmas trees everywhere, put geodesic domes everywhere. You can book them. Uh, they have like a national park style sign outside. Do they? Uh $50 to book an igloo, and then um it goes as a beer credit for you. Oh, that's cheap. Yeah. So if you are in the Chicagoland area, their beer is fabulous. It's my favorite October festival. They're in Naperville, so you know, kind of more in that southwest area. They have uh lots going on, lots of great beers, something for everybody. And um, yeah, it looks super cool. So go support them. They're people that took this whole pandemic and turned it, you know, they took the pandemic lemonade and turned it into pandemic. Pandemic they took the pandemic lemons. I don't know. They made some lemonade, probably with some alcohol in it, and probably some mangoes or some other fun ingredient because that's what they do. So check them out. Um, cool company, nice people, and I think we should support the people that just did it. Like, try, yeah, that that tried, put in some extra effort. So thanks, guys. Check out their Instagram. You can see all the pictures.

SPEAKER_01

It's just like, oh no, Nick sent it to me. I was like, can we go now? Can we just go? Anyway, we'll be right back. Okay. We're back. We're back. But I like to sing in entrance. We're back. Okay. I'm like Dolly Parton.

SPEAKER_00

You are like Dolly Parton, but not as rich or old or philanthropic. Or talented or vaccinated or. But otherwise, I'm just like her. But you are younger and less country.

SPEAKER_01

Less country. Is that a good thing? I think it's a good thing. You know who have you seen the trolls movie? The World 2. Simona's not into it's like Poppy, Poppy, can we watch Poppy? Poppy, Poppy or Nemo. That's what we're into right now.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, we're we're still in Nemoana.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, we're well past that, guys. Okay. Okay, anyway, there's a country singing troll, and I gotta think they modeled it after Dolly Parton. Like it's very spot on if you've seen the movie. If not, watch it.

SPEAKER_00

All right, Nick, what's it time for? It's time for interesting questions with Bridget and Nick.

SPEAKER_01

And it is Bridget's turn and it's themed. It's birthday edition, which also slash carnival edition, since Elliot's birthday party in theory was gonna be a carnival party. I don't know. We might have to cancel it. Uh um, anyway, if anyone has tips on what to tell a five-year-old about a canceled birthday party. Okay. Interesting questions. We're starting out easy, okay? Starting out easy. We're just gonna warm up with some quick fire questions here. All right, love it. Okay, cake or pie? Cake. Cake or ice cream, cake, chocolate or vanilla.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, in general or with the cake? With the cake.

SPEAKER_01

Vanilla. I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_00

In general, chocolate, but with uh cake, it's gonna be vanilla.

SPEAKER_01

With chocolate frosting? Just curious.

SPEAKER_00

I don't do chocolate frosting cakes.

SPEAKER_01

So vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. Yellow cake or white cake?

SPEAKER_00

Yellow cake. Okay, I just need with raspberry filling.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you already jumped ahead, man.

SPEAKER_00

And and and vanilla frosting.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, wow. Interesting. So actually, fruit or chocolate was one of my questions. So fruit in your cake. And then sprinkles or not was a question.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I like sprinkles, they just make things a little bit more joyous. But even on your raspberry cake? Oh, yeah. I mean, they're not like super flavorful. So my mama does this for me. Uh, you know, you make the round cake.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Raspberry jam, round cake, raspberry jam, round cake, frosted up, little sprinkles.

SPEAKER_01

That's nice sounding.

SPEAKER_00

It is a super delicious cake. I mean, so good. Do you think everybody's gonna be a little bit more? Now everybody else has I bet he would. Everybody else has stolen this cake for me now. Uh used to be special for me and my birthday. And now my sister wants it for her birthday, and everybody wants I'm like, you know, just because I am the taste maker and have this immaculate taste, it's it's I'm sure you know. People steal your ideas off the case. All the time.

SPEAKER_01

That is frustrating. I'm really sorry.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I know you should be like trouble, you know, brush your shoulder off.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you should brush your shoulder shoulder off.

SPEAKER_00

I and I know you should like just be honored that people think you have good ideas, but still like, no, come up with your own ideas. I spent a lot of time coming up with these ideas.

SPEAKER_01

I feel like you're upset about this. I am. It was my cake. I'm really sorry to hit a nerve while talking about birthday cakes. Elliot asked for a chocolate-tiered cake. Oh, okay. Um, maybe I'll put jam in between it. He just wants frosting. Chocolate frosting, chocolate cake, chocolate cake. Does he like jam? Yes, isn't it like a favorite fruit? He loves raspberries.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, there you go. It's delicious because it's like, especially with so he wants a chocolate.

SPEAKER_01

Is it like the moist maker in the Friends episode?

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

It's the moist maker. Whoa.

SPEAKER_00

I bet it'd be I mean, I bet it I I think you'd have to do yellow cake and then chocolate frosting. Oh, I just don't know that that would be okay. Because I don't know, like the rest of requested a chocolate tiered cake. I thought he wanted chocolate frosting.

SPEAKER_01

No, he wants chocolate everything. Chocolate everything. Okay. Let me be clear. Okay, guys. Anyway, moving on. Okay, on this note, I think I know the answer, but would you rather eat an entire cake of your choice, I suppose, or an entire gallon of ice cream?

SPEAKER_00

Ooh. Um tough call. This is a tough call.

SPEAKER_01

Because like lots of dairy, lots of sugar.

SPEAKER_00

So the dairy, you know, so you're gonna pay for this the next day no matter what. Either way. This is how I thought it was. I feel like if I ate the entire cake, I'd pay for it for about three days. Whereas I have the the entire thing of ice cream, it'd be over in about eight hours.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, I agree.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm gonna eat all the ice cream. Just get it done with.

SPEAKER_01

I do I was like, oh, what would be worse? I mean, it would just I don't know. Would you pay for the cake though? I feel like you'd just feel yucky. Yeah, you would pay. I would puke. But the dairy, you would feel yucky.

SPEAKER_00

I would puke. I would Oh, would you? I don't think I would puke. Like if I eat an entire cake.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I just think I would gain 500 pounds in a day. You would feel like crap for a week.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I guess.

SPEAKER_01

Because you'd be just like sugar covered. Yeah. You're right.

SPEAKER_00

So the dairy though, like you just like block out some time, say, like, hey, I'm gonna be we have a downstairs bathroom. Uh I'm gonna be downstairs for a while. Maybe get some magazines, some, some, some candles, some uh some Gatorade, you know. Just just take care of yourself. Immediately know it's coming, you'll be fine.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that sounds horrifying. So I this is a hard choice. I mean, one one, you might puke. I but like I might puke also from the dairy. I know that's not probably what's gonna happen. This for the record, this question was written before I knew all of the puke in my home. Great, great, okay. Would you rather play a pin the tail on the donkey or pinata? Oh, pinata. Do you love do men just love pinatas?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I mean, yes, because guess what you're gonna do? I know hit things, but you have to be blindfolded. Yeah, and so like so disoriented. If you accidentally nail someone else, oh oops, sorry. And maybe you can see through them, and maybe you just whack your sister upside the head because she stole your cake. Abby, did that happen?

SPEAKER_01

Do you need to write? Yeah, pinatas with kids are horrifying because yeah, it's just these like five-year-old kids aimlessly walking around with a bat or stick or whatever. I give them. I don't know. I have to give them something to hit a pinata with. He also demanded a pinata.

SPEAKER_00

Tennis rackets are really good.

SPEAKER_01

Mom, what's that thing that you hit with a stick? And I was like, oh. A cat. I guess that's a pinata. I hate pinatas. I want to. Why do you hate pinatas? Uh, I don't know. I feel like bad for the kid that doesn't get in there and get the candy, and like it's just it stresses.

SPEAKER_00

See, that's that's shocking to me because you're such a competitive sports person. Yeah. But you should be like, be faster, kid. You're a loser, kid. This is a valuable life lesson. You're all in on you're all in on the sports and people winning and losing.

SPEAKER_01

Plugging my beer up because I started laughing, and okay, okay. Anyway, everybody. See, pinatas make me nervous.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe there could be a competitive pinata league. There's competitive bags that Johnsonville sponsors that's on ESPN. So maybe there could be a competitive pinata league. Who would sponsor it? No secis. Let's think on that.

SPEAKER_01

For the kids. Well, I mean, it's adult. Bags is not for kids. Oh, I know that for adults. Okay. Do do adults have pinatas at their parties? But we're taking kids' games and adulting them. I mean, it's like dodgeball. That's a kid's game. I hate dodgeball too. That is a horrifying sport. It's not a sport, okay? It is a sport.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it is a sport, actually. It is a sport. If bowling's a sport, dodgeball sure as hell is a sport.

SPEAKER_01

Good call. Dodgeball is horrifying. It was scared me a lot, actually, to play it as a kid. Yeah, wow. This is revealing a lot of thumbs up. I love it.

SPEAKER_00

I love it.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't love kickball or dodge ball. It's those balls with the little like grips on them, those are painful.

SPEAKER_00

You know you're gonna get in the face at some point, but if you can get some other kid in the face.

SPEAKER_01

That's so mean. It's so mean. It's oh, you guys. Back to the super this really fun birthday. Would you rather okay? These are just some dumb ones that I need to know. Would you rather ride an elephant or a camel?

SPEAKER_00

We're at the circus now. Ooh, that's a good question.

SPEAKER_01

Um I think I've ridden an elephant.

SPEAKER_00

Elephant. I think elephant.

SPEAKER_01

Because they're less insane than camels.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and camels bite and smell better.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I uh I'm going elephant too. I think I rode one when I was little. Clearly was memorable.

SPEAKER_00

Now, if I could ride a camel by the Great Pyramids of Giza, that. That wasn't the question.

SPEAKER_01

That is um not the same as a camel at the circus in the in a depressing tent in a field.

SPEAKER_00

Definitely an elephant.

SPEAKER_01

Uh cotton candy or peanuts.

SPEAKER_00

Peanuts. Peanuts. Do you remember when we were kids and a circus came to Lake Geneva in like the Walmart parking lot? Very vaguely. And because we had a not super Walmart when we were kids. We had the like crap little Walmart. I remember when Super Walmart came. Stupid amount of parking lot because they had enough space for a super Walmart, and they put a circus in town, and it was like, oh, we're coming back to Walworth County, home of circuses, because Delavin was the home of yes. Yep. And uh was it Barnum and Bailey was there? I don't know. Anyway.

SPEAKER_01

You know, Delavin had one though, like two years ago. Like I went to, it was on the runway at the Lake Lun. Well, that's cool. Um, it was something.

SPEAKER_00

You know what you could just do? Watch the greatest showman.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if I'm like disillusioned because I'm an adult or like we brought Elliot. I so I think it was pre-Lucy. Did they have a bearded lady? No, it was really depressing. I was like, this this literally feels like a tent. I mean, people seem to enjoy themselves. We enjoyed ourselves, but it felt like you have this like majestic, majestic thought about circuses, like in your head. At least I kind of do. This was not that.

SPEAKER_00

It was really depressing. Dumbo ruined circuses for me.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah. Um, what's the other one? Water for elephants. Have you seen that? I haven't seen that one. Oh, that's a good one. Okay, anyway. This one I thought of while I was laying in bed last night and I wrote it in my phone. Good. So as to not forget it. This is not even a Googled one. And we're finalizing the questions with this one. Would you rather act like you were way younger or dress like you are way older, but no explanation of either. So, like you either dress like a grandpa with like the geriatric shoes or you act like a four-year-old all the time. Oh, that young? Oh, yeah. Younger, like we're yo, yo, yo, gee. Oh, no, no, not an idiot. Just and no explanation.

SPEAKER_00

Just like a grandpa for sure. Those geriatric shoes are comfortable. So, like that's people would just assume that, you know, I have foot problems and then be like, oh, he needs to wear geriatric shoes. The whole look. Well, I could wear the hat. I would look good in an old person's hat, a vest. I would look good. Yeah, people would think I'm retro. That'd be a big change of what you normally wear. I don't like wearing wool because it's scratchy.

SPEAKER_01

Well, old people wear wool, okay.

SPEAKER_00

And it's terrible, but I don't want to act like a four-year-old.

SPEAKER_01

Why? People might just think you have a disability then.

SPEAKER_00

I have a very important job.

SPEAKER_01

I need to be a girl. I mean, what if I said your job wouldn't suffer?

SPEAKER_00

You still want to dress like an old person.

SPEAKER_01

And then I could just like throw eggs at people. I'd be like, I'm far! I'm far. I can't wait to dress like an old person and have it be acceptable. Like shawls? No, like a crazy cat lady sweater. Like, oh, this is my crew neck sweatshirt that has a bedazzled cat on it that is made from the cloth of my dead cat. You know, something absurd like that. Why are you looking at me like that? I bet you people do that. You can do that now. Just so you got it from goodwill, and everybody will understand. This is the thing that's like part of me, right? I it's in me. I can say, oh yes. Anyway, that was a good set of questions, good job. Thanks, man. I like the quick fire.

SPEAKER_00

I like them too. I like those. I like those. Those are fun. All right, great. Um, all right. So once again this week's meal plan, we had some good, good options on there.

SPEAKER_01

Sure, so many good ones.

SPEAKER_00

The one I wanted, I saw, I saw it, I said, no, Bridge is gonna want this. And I was kind.

SPEAKER_01

He left it for me.

SPEAKER_00

But I left it for you.

SPEAKER_01

We play this game every week where I'm like, should I not pick the obvious one?

SPEAKER_00

Because we do have some like very similar things we just adore about food. And this is this is it very much. We had like when I can't I think when we did the episode in Vegas, we did like a 20-minute discussion off-air about this.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, was that this is probably the last time that this hasn't been on a meal plan in a while. All right, guys. The this we're talking about is a pickle brine fried chicken sandwich. I said it, I'm generally scared to make fried chicken at home, but I trust your recipes, Nick. Thanks. Um, also, pickle brind anything. I just read about pickles pickle soup. Have you ever had that? I've not had that. I don't know. I want it. I want to drink a whole gallon of it.

SPEAKER_00

Uh anyway. Good after you eat that gallon of ice cream. Give me really electrolytes back into you. I'm just gonna You know, if you have cramps at night, like you know, like leg cramps and stuff, um, and you don't have the pediolite, or even if you just need to really get it, uh, pickle juice is actually really the best way to get electrolytes back into you. So if you're cramping up, seriously, go grab that jar of pickles and drink the juice. It's a great way to get electrolytes back into you.

SPEAKER_01

I love this tip. Also, we're gonna tell one more side story before we talk about food. When we were little, my dad used to watch the movie Cocktail with um Tom Cruise, I think, and they would do tequila shots with like the salt, the lime. We were little, we had no idea what that was, and like we weren't watching the movie, but we must have like walked in and saw it, whatever. So my sister and I used to do shots of pickle juice, and we would put salt on our hand, slick it, and then they take a shot of pickle juice. Maybe I'm making that up. I don't think so though. Anyway, back to the recipe. Oh, this is a Polish recipe. Sarah will love this. Oh, great. Dill pickle soup. Nick's gonna make some. All right, so we love some good acid, right? So from our friend of the pickle, um, I believe this recipe says pickles are the secret to the perfect fried chicken sandwich. So pickles, like I do love uh pickles with any kind of fried chicken. I do think the crunch is really nice with the chicken and the little bite of acid, but brining the chicken in it as well gives you your extra little kick of pickles. So would you say, Nick, because you've had this more than me, if someone doesn't love pickles and they don't put the pickle on the sandwich, but they're brining the chicken in it, do you think that's too much pickle flavor?

SPEAKER_00

No, I think if you don't like chick pickles, I'm sorry, I'm now all up into this pickle soup recipe. Uh, I think if you don't like pickles, don't put the pickles on top. You will just notice like a saltier, tangier like flavor, juicier chicken. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Good, that's good advice.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, there's definitely like a hint of pickle.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But it's I'm so curious. Especially if you season up the um the breading. How do I have the breading written? Oh, I don't know, man.

SPEAKER_01

I have oh yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I have the breading. So I have it written up with um a pretty flavorful breading. Yeah. There's a little cayenne, there's some Italian seasoning in there. Yep. Um which is is important because you need to kind of base it and it so there's there's a lot of things you need to do if you're making your own breading to do something like this.

SPEAKER_01

I'm so nervous about it.

SPEAKER_00

So if you follow that breading, you really won't taste the pickle part of it. If you start omitting things that give it flavor, like the cayenne or the Italian seasoning, um, you're gonna taste a little shiny pickle more. Yeah. But otherwise, you're just gonna, it's gonna be juicier, a little bit saltier, and a little bit tanier.

SPEAKER_01

Is there like a certain pickle that's best? I know that sounds silly, but sometimes.

SPEAKER_00

I like my so my favorite is the Milwaukee's best. Oh, yes, the little baby ones. Those are my favorite. Um I wouldn't buy a refrigerated one um like Clausen. Um, that's a little different type of brine and uh a little different flavor and not quite as um shelf stable, so a little different acidity in it. Uh, if you're doing this, I would just buy a regular fully shelf stable pickle.

SPEAKER_01

Good advice. And what did you learn about dill pickles soup?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, it looks delicious. So it's carrot broth, potatoes, carrots, oh yum. Chopped up pickles, butter, flour, sour cream, water, pickle juice, yum, old bay, salt. Sounds delicious.

SPEAKER_01

Can you guys write in and let us know if any of you have had pickle soup and send us your recipes?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, and then optional garnish is sliced dill pickles, fresh dill, and black pepper. It sounds good. The dill sounds really good.

SPEAKER_01

I want this for dinner tonight.

SPEAKER_00

I do too.

SPEAKER_01

It's Lent, so. Oh, yeah, there you go. Okay, what are you eating besides dill pickle soup?

SPEAKER_00

Dill pickle soup. Let's go. Um, I am so we've actually been on a chicken free thing for a while, which is kind of weird for us. We usually eat a lot of chicken. Yeah. Um, but we we've been doing a lot of pork and a lot of like ground beef stir-fry-y type of dishes. Uh, not stir-fry, like skillet-y type of things. Casseroli. Oh, skillety, sure. But it's and it's also been beautiful outside. So it's like, I want to grill some stuff. Let's grill some pork chops. Let's grill some pork tenderloin. Um, we eat a lot of pork.

SPEAKER_01

I like grilled chicken.

SPEAKER_00

So it's time to do some grilled chicken. And um we're gonna do these yogurt lemon marinated grilled chicken breasts. They're a bright, sunshiny, summery recipe as it's getting warmer here. Marinating your chicken, or really chicken's the one to do in in yogurt, uh, Greek yogurt, does a great job because of the acidity in the yogurt and the cultures in there really works its way into the meat, breaks it down, gives it a little bit of flavor. Um, it's the best way to marinate stuff, chicken. Um, if you want to do a long time marinade, and lemon's just so beautiful with chicken. So lovely. Uh, that's a good one. That's just a good one. I like this one. It's just it draws a lot from Indian food without being um over the top. Yeah. So it draws a lot from technique and and flavor.

SPEAKER_01

That feels like a good one to just like throw on the grill and have it all week for salads or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, for sure. This is a great leftover salad. Yumma. It does take a little bit of planning ahead because you need to let it sit for a while.

SPEAKER_01

I know that's what I'm really bad at. I'll like be like, choose a recipe for dinner. 30 minutes before dinner, I'll read it and be like, you should have this marinating for four hours.

SPEAKER_00

Well, so if you're not so okay, so the deal on marinating is that you don't need to let it sit for a long time. I mean, I never do because I never plan that far and ahead. The um you know, marinades are all oil-based uh generally. And an oil thing is this big and the like things in the animal are this big, so the oil can't get into the animal. So it doesn't matter. It just coats the outside. Oh. Which is great because it gives it flavor and it makes you you taste moisture, so it seems juicier, but it doesn't penetrate.

SPEAKER_01

Um unless you don't you like what if you're tender?

SPEAKER_00

Unless you inject it. So meat had this book that you can see. He has a whole thing about it. Now, if you do um what's called a brinerade, a brine marinade hybrid where you use enough salt to uh break down the meat? No, it's not a thing. It it causes uh more osmosis and pulls water differently. Um, or if you do a brine, or if you do yogurt. Yogurt actually works because it's so acidic and takes time to break it down. What? Yeah. Okay, it's okay. So you don't need that. Let's go. Let's see. We can see he has pictures.

SPEAKER_01

I've been I've been duped by the world of marinades. I never marinate them and they're still delicious for the record. My delicious chicken swarma salad that I ate twice this week.

SPEAKER_00

This would be great for chicken swarma.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I don't marinate that ever and it's delicious.

SPEAKER_00

We're finding dry brines work though. I'd suggest dry brining.

SPEAKER_01

What are you finding information at?

SPEAKER_00

I want to- He has these pictures showing how much marinating doesn't work. Great. I'm super thrilled. Anyway, we'll we'll do this off air.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Now we know. Now we all know. Now we know. Okay. Anyway. That's what we're eating this week, guys. That's what we're eating. We're both having chicken. Nick is trying to find information about marinating. It is time for.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, here we go, here we go, here we go.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I almost started there without you.

SPEAKER_00

See, you can see.

SPEAKER_01

Oh boy. Marinades penetrate deep into the meat. It's a myth busted. Oh, he does like myth busted. Wow. This is making me kind of sad. We gotta create it in this ticket filler with oil. None of it had been soaked up. Oh. Because the meat is it says the meat is 70% water, and oil and water don't mix. Boom. Look at everything we're learning. Okay, kid corner. As promised, we would get back around to this, and I have another puke story for you.

SPEAKER_00

So again, um It's a rough, rough stretch for you.

SPEAKER_01

I know there are people that know me that are listening to this, and you know how um I know no one likes puking. I know it makes everyone anxious and a little weird, but like take that to the next level up this high, and that's how I feel about it. Like, it is actually, I think, some sort of mental problem. I don't know what to do about it, but it's okay. I'm fine. It is, it's just like a I don't know. I have I have straight up anxiety about it.

SPEAKER_00

You look good in Timbus. Now imagine vice president, Kamala Harris in the Timbus. That's a good level of anxiety.

SPEAKER_01

So Tyler, my loving husband, can just like let kids puke on him and he's cool with it, which is exactly what happened at our house last weekend. So I wrote this in our outline last Monday. It says, ha ha ha ha ha ha. That's my ha ha ha ha ha. Because last week the outline said Lucy barfing. So this time, Elliot um was like, it was a weekend. You know, we woke up on a Sunday, we were supposed to go have brunch, we're gonna have waffles with our papa, um, with grandpa, and um, then we were gonna do uh some other fun things that take. So it was very nice out. So he was like, ah, my stomach, I have this crank. He calls it a crank, a cramp, cramp, crank, interchangeable at our house. I have a crank in my stomach. Okay, but like on and off, on and off, and we're kind of like, are you like messing around? And we're like, no, it's a school day, it's not a school day, like you're not faking it. What are you doing? You know, all morning. So I was like, all right, I took Lucy over to um my dad's, so to grandpa's for waffles, and uh Tyler stayed home with Elliot, got home, put Lucy down for a nap, and I was in, I was cleaning my bedroom and the basement, the boys were in the basement, and you can hear directly through the vents um from my bedroom into the basement, and I just heard sobbing. And I'm like, ah, Tyler either like, you know, told him he couldn't watch a video game or yeah, whatever, or he threw up. And I was like, Oh, he threw up. So I go run into the kitchen, like where there's the back staircase to the basement, and I'm like, hey, like, everything okay down there. And Tyler comes upstairs with like a comforter and pillows, like just a wad full of stuff. And he's like, I have to go shake this out the back door. And he had to shake out the apple chunks that we fed Elliot, shake it out the back door into the snow for the record, so you could see it all, and then throw it all in the laundry. But like Tyler's so freaking chill about it. And he just but so what happened? Elliot's still not quite at that age. And what I'm wondering is whoever has older kids than my almost five-year-old, right in. When do kids know when puke is coming? Because Elliot still doesn't get it. He just said, like, oh, I have this crank, and then he threw up everywhere, like everywhere. So when do they start to realize? So we can be like, hey, man, like go to the bathroom. We'll go with you. When does that happen? Someone told me not till third grade, and I'm gonna die if that's true.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's sooner than that.

SPEAKER_01

I gotta think. They said, like, maybe first or second grade. I who told me this? I can't even remember now. My brain is mush. Anyway, Elliot got super sick on Sunday. We kept him home on Monday. All I did was like. I couldn't focus on anything on Monday because I'm like, oh my god, I'm just like waiting for my kid to throw up again. But luckily he didn't. Um, so he was fine, but we needed to get like regular food back in his system, and um then it was Tyler's turn. So anyway, it's going through our house. I hope next week you don't hear Kid Corner about myself and that it was me next. So stay tuned for that. Tell me you have a not puking story. I have a not puking story.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, great. So uh my story is about Simona and fun adventures we go on. We uh she likes to run around all over. She's very good at the running now, and she very much so just wants to go run. Um we can run up and down our driveway. She does that great. She's great. And she really likes to push her wagon. She doesn't like to ride in her wagon, she likes to push it. And it's a little challenging with snow on the side of the driveway still in mud, and also a road at the end of it. So, you know, like hold on, girl. Don't steer into the road. So we will take her to Home Depot or Target and let her walk around there. And what she's decided she wants to do is push the carts. Oh, yeah. So she gets behind the cart and pushes it, and you know, we steer. She has a great job. We were at Target the other day, and her and I, and she just we walked to get her mom some stuff, some new clothes. We got her some um food from the thing. We got a toy for someone. We went to get us some food. We had to get mom a candle or something. Walked all over, and she just stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp, stomp in her beautiful Adidas. Yes, those are bombs. And it's so funny because she, you can't see her, you know, because I'm like Yes, doing this. I've done this thing. And so people are like, who is this idiot? What walking like this by his cart. And then they see a little girl and she goes, hi, and then keeps walking. And people think it's the best thing. Yes, it's so fun. Some people don't, and they are assholes. And if you don't like small children being not at all annoying or harmful, just living their lives.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, just saying hi to strangers. Just I think it's fascinating. I've done Lucy likes to do the same thing, obviously. And I'm like, I'm sorry that my kid like said hello. Was that disruptive to your shopping experience? And they just don't. I'm like, just wave back. Like, she's one.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm very proud of her. She's beautiful and smart and talented and so fun. And I just love it because she just, you know, she's off doing her thing. It's like, girl, you go get it.

SPEAKER_01

Oh man. And it takes up time. And really, that's the thing.

SPEAKER_00

And you know, just a lot of fun. Just a go-around target.

SPEAKER_01

Oh god, you guys.

SPEAKER_00

I think that wraps up this episode, right?

SPEAKER_01

I think we're done talking about the puke. Anything else? Any more people? I don't know. I hope not. I'm gonna go on air. Just kidding. Yeah, so many people. I just I'm not gonna call them out, but everybody. Everybody.

SPEAKER_00

Was it Brittany?

SPEAKER_01

Maybe. Just kidding. She they're in a very secure bubble, and I am very jealous of it at this point. I thought of them this morning. I was like, man, Brittany and Dennis, they don't have kids. They don't, they're not like getting the sickness that's going rampant through all the kids. Ugh. Anyway, great job, guys. Not getting sick. I hope none of you are feeling sick.

SPEAKER_00

We have a new episode of Pinkies Up. Yes, if you haven't seen it, it's about what wine goes best with pepperoni pizza. And I know that sounds trivial, but it's important.

SPEAKER_01

I learned a lot, as always, from that episode. And I learned more than just what pairs best with the pizza. I also learned a new a new wine that I like a lot.

SPEAKER_00

So it was a fun one because Bridget learned some things. We got to eat some pizza. We love frozen pizza. And it's just one of those things where like you can have a $10 bottle. Just, you know, you have an emergency frozen pizza. So have an emergency frozen pizza bottle of wine. If you need to reach for that frozen pizza, it's probably because your kids are puking. Yeah, you just need something, and you probably need a glass of wine. So make it a good one.

SPEAKER_01

Good tie-in, guys. Make sure to find us on YouTube. You can find that episode of Pinkies up on YouTube. Find us on Facebook and Instagram at DinnerPlus Drinks Podcast.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, we need those. So thank you very much for listening or watching, whichever way you choose to consume dinner plus drinks. We do appreciate it. Y'all have a lovely week.
